I picked up this summer when they released for retail and I'm really happy with it. I wish more RPGs go this way: boxsets containing simple stapled books n zines and not only the deluxified leatherettes trend of the las years. Also, having available classic material without having to pay crazy money for the originals is great. Great review, Daniel!

43:59 The Solo Investigator's Handbook is so great! I use it with the mythic system and the Cthulhu Nights Chapbook for fast and easy rules system (I suggest taking a look at that). I use CoC 7Ed and Pulp Cthulhu for a base on everything else except for the game mechanics that I find heavy and tiresome for my solo games. There is also the equivalent book from the same author titled The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox. Basically the same thing but for fantasy settings.

This brings back so many awesome memories when a friend got me into this back in the 80’s with the original box set. I loved the fact all the monsters were only silhouettes leaving it to your imagination. I’ve lapped up anything Mythos based since then. Awesome review. 😀 May have to pick this up.

Great review! I bought this a few weeks back. Great box set. I have been trying to solo through CoC. The scenario layout doesn't make it easy. Still, I'm building my own approach - largely a journaling exercise with the scenario as prompts. Thanks again! Great Channel!!

Very interesting and useful for a beginner like me. I'm just starting out (with the CofC Starter Set) and I was curious as to how I would build a solo experience from there and this video game me a clue to how I might progress once I eventually go through the 'Alone Against....' books. CoC is my fav game because of its flexibility in creating a game that mimics older pc style adventure games / detective stories / mysteries etc which are a bigger draw to me than dungeon crawling (though dungeon crawling is my preferred gameplay style for board games). It also works well at various player counts. Here it is common to play one player one keeper because getting a group together can be hard and there are a ton of self published adventures made for 2 people.

I started playing CoC with the 2nd edition and that book looks pretty close to my copy - the art, the layout, etc.... I picked it up as a teenager and it kicked off a lifetime love of the Mythos. All the lore and detailed overviews of the creatures and Elder Gods, it was unlike anything else I'd seen (having come from AD&D) - absolutely a treasure!
@TheDungeonDive
@TheDungeonDive Год назад
Do you have a preferred edition now?
@miked5394
@miked5394 Год назад
@@TheDungeonDive Good question. I've only ever played the 2nd edition. I skipped all versions after that but did pick up the 7th edition a few years ago and found it rather similar. The biggest changes I could see were in the character development options - the skill points they give you to make a character. Slightly lower in the 2nd edition than in the 7th and in checking around, that seems to be the biggest change. Giving characters more points definitely tilts the balance more towards the players (imho) as it makes them more likely to succeed at various skill checks. There are other minor things (like the chase mechanic) but overall I think they're minor adjustments. I think if I were going to play, I'd personally stick with the 2nd edition or try Pulp Cthulhu because I own it and know it. If I'd never played before and didn't have books, I'd probably jump in with the current rules. Since you have the 40th anniversary, I'd definitely give that a go! If you can get your hands on the classic adventures (above and beyond what comes in those rule books), so many of them are really great - Masks of Nyarlathotep, Arkham, Horror on the Orient Express - just so many.
@TheDungeonDive
@TheDungeonDive Год назад
Yeah - characters in 7e seem to be a lot more powerful.
@miked5394
@miked5394 Год назад
@@TheDungeonDive What's interesting is that I started running an online 5E D&D campaign during the pandemic as a way to stay in touch with friends remotely. The "power creep" for the characters has actually derailed my ability to run the game and I'm switching over to Dungeon Crawl Classics to try and change the dynamics. I wonder if player characters becoming more powerful has been a trend overall for PnP RPGs over the last 20 years?
@TheDungeonDive
@TheDungeonDive Год назад
Yes, I think so. I talk a bit about it in this video. Players have so much stuff competing for their time now, that I think they easily check out if they aren't doing cool things. I like to be heroic in my games, so I like more powerful PCs. This is why I love Scarlet Heroes so much - my level 1 character is total bad ass. I start as hero, and become a more powerful hero! Conversely, this is why I dislike DCC so much! :)

I refed a short campaign of Call of Cthulhu in the late '80s. I described cultists summoning an Old One in the woods and the party kept watching them (regardless of my clues) until the god turned up and killed everyone. In the rule book, it states the characters are expected to run from many of the dangers. My friends were slow learners.

Speaking of Solo RPGs tools, have you ever see the Adventure Crafter by Tana Pigeon? Another great tool for solo. Also the CRGE by Zach Best can help advance the Yes/No oracle system adding more variables to it. And the BOLD system can give seeds to create events out of the "spot light" or at the background of your story. Like adding the "in the mid time" happenings.

To your questions: yes--came in a box much like this one. No--the back was not like the one you show. Digital readers? More like no Internet, no BBS even, rip-offs of Edward Gorey illustrations? :)

I’ve just recently started to play Call of Cthulhu solo, I’m new to both CoC and the “Solo Investigator’s Handbook”. I’m struggling a bit with what would be a good investigator to start with, and I’m unsure of how the “boosting your solo investigator” thing from the handbook works in practice. Is the extra personal interest skill points the only mechanical adjustment, and the extra occupation just flavour/justification for those skill points, or do the character get any benefits from the second occupation? As far as I can tell from the rules of CoC occupation and personal interest skill points are not connected in any way, so I’m confused. I feel a bit like I’m missing something obvious, so I appreciate any advice or clarification 😅

Note: The 'Resistance Chart' on the older BRP-based games is a fairly simple calculation, if you'd rather do it in your head than look it up on the chart. When both of the opposing stats are equal, then it's a 50% chance of success. Add or subtract the difference between the two characters' stats, multiplying that difference by 5%. e.g. If Active Character (STR 12) is trying to wrestle something out of Target Character's (STR 15) hands, then there is a -3 difference in stats, so -3 x 5 results in -15% from the base 50% = 35% Total. If it were the other way around (+3 higher stat than target) then it would be 65% total. Or you can just count plus or minus 5 per difference off, one at a time. Min 5% to Max 95% That may be more math than some can do in their head, but the table is there so they don't have to. Or, if you want one less table look-up during play and can math, then it's one less table to worry about.
