Just had a long, cold, three hour walk through the city after a crappy night shift in my robbery target of a local convenience store, and I come home to this. Thank you so much Roses. Made my night. (Morning?)
>Look at pigeons "Some of them look rather cocky, but I think they're all pretty fowl." >Talk to pigeons "I cooed wing it, but it wouldn't sound very sin-cere." >Kiss pigeons "On second thought, I shouldn't. At most, I'd get a peck on the cheek."
Callahan's is a testimony of a very concrete zeitgeist for science-fiction and fantasy writers belonging to the second half of the 20th century. It seems, back in the day when science-fiction and fantasy literature wasn't as mainstream as it is in our times, if you wanted to knew the "somebodies" during a convention you only had to visit the pub closest the convention center or the hotel's bar. This setting does have the feeling of a tribute to that particular era.
The font used here is Comic Sans. The game is inundated with puns. The main character, who speaks in comic sans and frequently uses puns, frequents a bar filled with monsters. He is also charged with saving the world he holds dear. ...I'm starting to think this entire game helped influence a certain character from Undertale.
The babylon, wantagh, freeport are references to stops on lines served by the Long Island Rail-Road (New York trains). You'd hear the announcements over and over, many times per day in Penn Station, when waiting for them.
i was searching for reviews in Grim Fandango and I found this gem of a channel. and 2 days ago up until now I am here binge watching all of your reviews. i don't even plan on playing all of these but I'm here! good job miss
I had no idea this type of stuff was offered back then. Too many of the classic adventure games seemed the same, just in different settings. But this seems different, the type of game that I thought only came out after the big adventure game crash. Thanks for reviewing it!
This video convinced me enough to download DOSbox to get this running. It's the first graphic-adventure game I've ever played, and it was excellent. The best writing I've seen out of any other game I've played, no joke. I'll probably be playing many more GA games after this one. Thank you for the video.
finally sometrhing going right today. the power supply on my work pc died today. Been running in circles working on my old laptop and trying to figure out if it was truly dead or not. SO GLAD to see this video.. gave me something to enjoy while scarfing down lunch between meetings. You awe awesome. Glad you are back to making stuff and feeling (i hope) a lil better.
Oh man, I always wondered when you would do a review of this. I greatly enjoyed your LP of this as it was really enjoyable to watch through. Plus it introduced me to the game and book series too which I can't thank you enough for.
Five years? It was FIVE years ago!? Holy crap, I actually cannot believe that. I was gonna say I didn't think you'd revisit this game after your Let's Play, like it was 2-3 years ago. FIVE YEARS?!
Too many cooks are trying to get in your kitchen The first thing you know there's something missin' You got a real good oven, you've got a hot range, too Let me butter your buns while you stir the stew
Hey Roses, I just wanted to way that this was another awesome review and that I always look forward to watching your stuff. You're one of very few game reviewers on RU-vid that has actually got originality and doesn't just copy others. You choose interesting titles and always talk about them in a way I can really relate to, especially concerning topics like death and the darker sides within ourselves. I hope you'll read this, and sorry for any language mistakes. Thanks for your great work.
Smarf approves of your choice for outro melody! Also, I also still go onto SL, though admittedly I idle in my skybox much of the time. I'm glad I ran into your channel! I love your content so far!
Glad to know I wasn't completely insane and that I was remembering correctly that I watched you had play through this game some time ago on the Spoony Experiment forums. Oh my, how the time does fly.
I grew up on long island near Amagansett actually and, there might be an extra unnoticed pun in the game. There is a 20ft tall Big Duck on long island. It is an old building on the highway that connects to the south fork in Flanders. It has its own Wikipedia page and might be known because to get to popular vacation destinations Montauk and the Hamptons etc. you basically need to drive by the Big Duck. It has been there since the 30s, so in the beginning when he says "people of long island better duck" I am almost positive that is a reference to that giant duck. It's a small tourist shop now, when I was a kid there was some sort of fight about the eyes and for a few years they were glowing red eyes, I don't know what they are now but was cool when it looked like a demonic super duck.
Wow! I had forgotten about the Legend point n'click games... I loved Companions of Xanth, chock full of puns as well, and came with the "Demons don't Dream" novel
I want to play this one. I've played 3 Legend games 15 years ago and (mostly) loved them all; Xanth, Death Gate and Shannara - so I'd like to go through this and their earlier stuff like Eric, the Unready. Their company Logo at the start is very good at lulling me into the adventuring spirit almost as effective as a Sierra or Lucasarts, despite me not having the same long history with it.
This is a pretty nice looking game. It has that art style in which everything is sort of bent and not quite right and I really like that. It's like half Norman Rockwell and half Salvador Dhali.
*jaw hits the floor after Long Island pun manslaughter hits me in the face*....YOU....YOU....you bastards!!! DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST LIST EVERY STOP ON MY LOCAL TRAIN LINE!? AND MAKE CLEVER WORDPLAY OUT OF IT!? YOU DIABOLICAL BEAUTIFUL MONSTERS
Hey PUR, first of all im a HUGE fan of your channel. Thanks for all the awesome videos =D I actually have a question and i can't find an answer to it sadly. I downloaded the game for my DosBox and sadly i just have Music but no Sound and Voices. Did you had that problem also or did you copied your files from a CD? I really want to Play this game myself but without the Voice acting it seems kinda uncomplete and feels like something is missing (ha ha because someting IS missing =D) Hope you can somehow help.
This is why I like Quest for Glory, their Puns may be cheep, or even compulsive, but I understand them all and don't feel like I'm siting at the Algonquin Round Table sucking my thumb.
I've been screensharing games over skype with a friend for a few weeks... we need this so bad now, because of the puns!!! Where do you find so many amazing games?
I have been debating whether or not I should play this, but this review convinced me that I should :) Are the other Legend Entertainment games as good as this? :)
There are some interesting voices in this game like Jeff Baker, who voices Jake Stonebender himself and Squish. Then we have Peter Gil playing Alaniz, Ziv, and Chives. Both Gil and Baker went on to voice in Fallout 3, but Baker acts as a sort of "generic male" voice while Gil plays Confessor Cromwell and Enclave Colonel Augustus Autumn. Baker'd go on to voice a number of Elder Scrolls characters starting from _Adventures: Redguard_ and Saint Jiub in Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC, but also a few hit-and-miss characters in Unreal II: The Awakening, a game which is generally considered crappy unlike its predecessor Unreal. …One could almost feel sorry for Peter Gil having to play such poorly written characters in a gameworld that's supposed to feel depressing and desolate while at the same time trying to bring itself back from the Great War in 2077, especially when Fallout 3's writer Emil Pagliarulo shows he either doesn't understand or doesn't care about what the franchise's is about.
merchantfan Unfortunately, the rights to the Legend games have been passed around a lot, and we may not see those games on GOG or Steam any time soon, if ever. Your best bet is to try to find a copy on eBay, or even attempt to find an ISO somewhere.
