You know, everyone talks about Mark Hamill and Tim Curry in this game, but hardly ever mentions Leah Remini as Grace. It was awesome to hear you specifically bring her up. Totally agree!

When I was a kid I never knew who the voice actors were...but I loved em..and a couple years ago when I rewatched a play thru Grace's voice stood out and I was like I KNOW that voice!! Currently bought GK1 off steam and playing it now...sooo nostalgic

I remember my Dad changed telephone services or something and as a reward the company let you pick a Sierra game that they would send you for free. I picked Gabriel Knight, but I completely forgot about it. Then one Saturday I was completely bored and all of a sudden Gabriel Knight just shows up in the mail... I played it all night... that was such a good day.

Me too, it was of the best experiences I had, I was completely observed by the atmosphere and followed the investigation... I felt like I am actually in there, interrogating and learning what is going on. I never played a game where the story is so woven together with the gameplay and puzzle and yet the puzzles are still so challenging.

One thing I always loved about Gabriel Knight is how clearly influenced it is by the comic books of the time. You can clearly see that influence in the art, the atmosphere and even the plot. A lot of the art looks like it could have been drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz or Dave McKean. The whole thing is reminiscent of comics like Hellblazer (starring John Constantine) or Swamp Thing.

The cutscenes with comic-esque panels lend credence to this idea too.

After so many years, perhaps it is a bit ridiculous to leave this comment, but while I was doing my own review I discovered something that I think you did not know, or at least you did not comment on in the review, and I would like to share: Laura Bow and Gabriel Knight occur in the same continuity! If you look at the Gabriel Knight Tulane College bulletin board enough times, you'll find the news that in a few weeks Laura Bow will be lecturing as the Pulitzer Prize winner. Likewise, in her name the surname "Dorian" also appears, confirming that Laura ends up marrying Steve Dorian. It would be an incredible game where Gabriel Knight and an elderly Laura Bow, like Jessica Fletcher, join forces to solve a mystery!

I think you are my spirit animal! I am from Brazil and I actually played a good part of the adventure games you have played during my childhood (including the Titanic one and the cheesy Phantasmagoria). However, the Gabriel Knight series stands as one of the most amazing adventure games of all time! By the way, I am living in Berlin right now, and, when I was in Munich, I went to Marienplatz and tried to find the locations of the game (the square, the place were the hunt club was located at and the lawyer's office). And I am planning a trip to Ludwig's castle and, help me God, I will quick the walls just to make sure there isn't any Wagner opera hidden around. And I am also very curious to go to New Orleans to see what's up! Please keep up with your amazing videos!

OMG, so cool that Gabriel Knight inspired you to visit New Orleans!! I had the same experience with Gabriel Knight 2: it inspired me to visit Marienplatz in Munich and the Neuschwanstein castle. I took pictures of the scenes I'd seen in the game, and I was just ridiculously excited. I also moved to Germany later, but that's unrelated. Anyway, great review! I never made it past Day 1 in Gabriel Knight, I just couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, lol. I need to go back to it one of these days. 😄

You've sold me on this game. I've never been a fan of the Sierra games due to some titles having serious moon logic but this title seems so atmospheric and well produced, taking me back to when I was first introduced to Broken Sword. I completely relate to your seeking out game locations when travelling. I plead guilty for spending a day riding the Paris metro looking for locations in Broken Sword and Deus Ex. Great review!

Adventure games are really good at sucking me in, but the problem is that I just don't have the patience for them. It's really my own fault. Anyway, I really wouldn't have known that was Tim Curry. No joke, I really couldn't tell it was him except for a few small parts where he hams it up.

This game looks amazing. Well ofc being a Sierra title helps it a lot but it feels like one of those old-time murder mysteries (like the black and white ones) where there's a touch of comedy with a lot of serious story. As of all sierra games the backgrounds on this look gorgeous! Whoever made these for all the games I want your autograph! They just feel so alive and homey! :D Also great hair again PushingUpRoses, in fact I tried it myself and I honestly have never felt better or free. All thanks to you roses! :)

I remember Gabriel Knight cover art always crept me out as a child. As a teenager I found this big ass Gabriel Knight collection box in some supermarket, but it cost like 100 bucks. Now, that I didn't buy it, it haunts me a bit.. As a collector only. The sequels haven't aged well. I've visited real life locations of videogames & films too. When I was in Paris with my girlfriend, we had to visit Rue Jarry because I wanted to see it in real life if it was like in Broken Sword! It wasn't.. It was just some street. But gladly Moulin Rouge and the Café from Amelie were awesome!

Before I went to college, having the lecture scene always stuck into my head as a kid. And once when I finally went into an actual lecture, the auditorium looks so similiar to GK:SoF that I had a major flashback on this. Of course, this game was so accurate on New Orleans landmarks, had to go there again to see back in high school. God wish I could play this game again. Also, nice Grim Fandango necklace. Looks awesome.

I loved this game. The Voodoo stuff really freaked me out. I love Tim Curry, but I did find his delivery too flamboyant for a womanizing writer, it made me feel he was a closeted gay man. Nice recap. The second game made me dream about going to Munich and the Neuchwenstein Castle, and it meant a lot when I did. PS: That lobotomy joke is pure gold. PSS: where's your Beast Within review?

My Favourite Adventure game series. I actually bought a second hand disc version of this when it first came out but the version was bugged so I couldn't get past a certain spot since an area wouldn't unlock, and since the Internet wasn't mainstream yet I had to mail a letter to Sierra about it - then got a letter back asking me to mail them the CD to look at it (they paid for postage) - then they sent me back a full boxed copy of the game minus bug. I also have boxed copies of Two and Three. I even pre-ordered the 20Th Anniversary Edition in hopes it would boost sales to make Gabriel Knight 4.

I somehow completely missed this game on its original release, despite being a huge adventure and P&C fan. I barely even knew it existed until the 2014 remake. I played that and loved it enormously. Excellent story, characters, locations and especially wonderful soundtrack. From what I gather the remake is fairly faithful - streamlining the interface and greatly improving the art without losing the feel of the original. That said, they did redo most (all?) of the voice acting, so it's certainly not identical. I plan to play the original version sometime so that I have experienced both.

I recently played with this game, but haven't finished yet. This review pretty much sums up, it's defineately not an easy game, you don't event get text-hints where you have object of interest or not. The dialogues you had with other characters are also recorded by Gabriel to old-school tapes to read back later, but I haven't used them yet. I plan to continue and finish the game, but it's been a while, so it might take some time to get my clues together where I am. (it's the DOS version without voice acting) I give it 4 shot + jäger out of 5.
