The usage and meaning of words changes over time. Since the Inuit people don't identify with the word Eskimo and since the majority of people use the word Inuit, eventually the word Eskimo will only identify the Edmonton football team. Letting the definition change might be more effective at eliminating its offensive aspect. To prevent or discourage the use of the word would simply preserve the offensive definition, as has happened with the Swastika. The Nazis corrupted a perfectly good symbol, but if people, over generations, are able to let go of that offensive definition, it could once again be used to represent good fortune or the Sun.
+thinkofwhy "The Eskimo are the indigenous peoples who have traditionally inhabited the northern circumpolar region from eastern Siberia (Russia), across Alaska (United States), Canada, and Greenland." Kaplan, Lawrence. "Inuit or Eskimo: Which name to use?"Alaskan Native Language Center, UFA. Retrieved 14 Feb 2015 "Eskimo: Usage." Oxford Dictionaries. Retrieved 27 Jan 2014 'Eskimo" The Free Dictionary. Retrieved 27 Jan 2014. There is ZERO derogatory suggestion about this! The description is not JUST Canadian but a European, Russian, and US description. It is as offensive as Englishman, Viking, or Turk. More PC cry baby whining where hands out to be greased would cure all. I am sure the CBC will censure all non-native Canadians to promote more WASP self-hate to foster catering to the .0001% of the population's over-sensitives
i disagree with your definition of Eskimo. The Cree may denote Eskimo as "raw meat eater" (I cannot say either way) but it has different meaning in different languages. Etymology of Eskimo: via French Esquimaux, possibly from Spanish esquimao, esquimal, from Montagnais ayas̆kimew ‘person who laces a snowshoe,’ probably applied first to the Micmac and later to the Eskimo. So from a linguistic reference it means person who laces snowshoe- not raw meat eater. Even if it did mean raw meat eater, why is that offensive? Coquitlam denotes an Indian band near me-it means dead stinky salmon. Raw meat eater seems pretty flattering vs being referred to as people of stinky dead salmon. The idea of prejudice makes no sense. The definition of prejudice is-preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Reason and geography are all factors identifying this cultural group in Greenland, Canada, USA, and Russia. Eskimo is not derogatory or prejudicial.
This is the silliest topic and waste of time. Sorry but there was and is no disrespect meant when this team was named. I haven’t seen a mascot of an “Eskimo” As a world we need to learn you will never make everyone happy, so we need to stop trying.
Political correctness is getting obscene. Certainly there are more important things in our lives than a team mascot name than Eskimos ? There's something to be offended by if you want to be offended.
They guy didn't project himself as being positive more scared really that and why shouldn't their be a indoor football field in the north with northern communities having their own football teams
