CALLTHEMALL PETERBILT 379 TRUCK UPDATE 2022! 

I'm a mechanic. My advice for vibration, if you sense it coming from back of the truck when speeding is to go as fast as you can in a decently paved road where there is not much traffic and while on speed, bring the truck to neutral, don't apply any break or throttle and let it roll down the road. Now 1-If it still shaking and the vibration doesn't change, definitely be suspicious of drive shaft. There are little "weights" on drive shafts to balance them, and it is possible for those weights to come off specially in salty/icy condition. 2- if the amount of shaking changes, you can be suspicious of engine. Misfire, weak injection and stuff like that

Worked for one of the OEM’s several years ago. We ran some successful experiments with flushing fuel systems to remove brown deposits that accumulate in the system over time. 50/50 mix of John Deere injector cleaner and clean fuel in a 5 gallon bucket, run both the supply and return lines into the bucket and run at high idle. You can watch the black deposits flowing out of the return. Once completed change the fuel filters.

Just a quick tip... when using a chain or cable to pull, ALWAYS drape a coat or piece of carpet over the cable. If the cable or chain snaps, the coat dissipates the kinetic energy, causing the cable or chain to harmlessly fall to the ground.

Good update. At least you dont have the emissions stuff to deal with. I swear it's that stuff breaking down new trucks more often than not. Certainly is for me. Last freightshaker i drove the "one box" was replaced three times in one year at 15 grand a pop. Then they parked the truck and junked it.

I am so sorry to have had so many issues. If I can suggest anything I would talk to Super Trucker Dan who has 3 PB 379’s. He works on him and knows his stuff. He obviously is on you tube. He is an older guy who I greatly admire and listen to his videos. It is so hard when you are the one and only guy owning it. Keep the faith.

One of your shakes sounds kind of similar to a shake in an 05 379 my dad drove, the guy who owned the truck spent a couple years trying to figure it out and it ended up being his driveshaft, it had a slight curve to it, might be something worth looking into, i hope things ease up on ya, stay safe driver

Priorities first, good looks can wait. I wish you could figured out that shaking cause, because it could lead to some other serious issues. But remember: Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do! Keep on trucking!

I guess you will have a huge christmas list for your truck or for next next if thing goes positive. Those cable you can coil them up and tie them down on the walk deck, but that is up to on that. While it still warm out, do what you can before winter.

I know I mentioned this in you last video on that shake about the primer pump. You said you had replaced it and I had a similar issue before. Changed the primer pump and it was bad from the factory. Changed it again and it was fine. Cat actually makes a bypass plate. I think it was like $15. Just a thought. I understand your frustration. Trucks can be such a pain in the ass.

Late comment here (just came across this video today), and you may have the driveline vibration fixed by now, but Peterbilt has a tool that’s used to set air ride height. It’s not uncommon for the suspension ride height to be quite a ways off (low or high, but usually they were too high). When I worked at a local Pete dealer, it only took a few minutes to set ride height. I’ve seen quite a few axle housings leak as well. Pete suspensions are hard on them for some reason. It never seems to matter which suspension it is (air leaf, air trac, etc).

Not sure the best place, but at a boat yard you can find a service to empty your fuel tanks...have to fuel cleaned/filtered. And clean out your fuel tanks. After years, believe it or not, algie or whatever can start growing in diesel fuel tanks.... it's thick. I only know about this from cruising yats with diesel tanks. And now that I am at 18:32 in this video...I am pretty damn sure ...you have thick fuel due to algie or whatever. Clean your fuel tanks.

As it relates to the shake and miss when you are climbing a hill, have you checked the overheads? I had the same issue on my truck, valves adjustments solved it completely

Get under your truck to grab and try to wiggle the driveshaft and look at your u-joints. If you’ve got play then replace your u joints. I forget what they’re called but check your tension bars or what some call “dog bones” right above the axles. Take it for an alignment make sure your rears are nice and aligned

Love that Pete! Wish the Pete I drove for work was loud and had jakes like yours. I've been driving for quite some time and wanted to ask a question from someone experienced. But do you downshift by keeping constant pressure on the throttle and basically and gently rub the gear against the gear you want to match it in. Or do you tap the throttle and basically give another tap to blip the rpms and put the stick in the lower gear. Just wondering. I've done and do both methods and each have their pros and cons. Wondering what you do?

I think you would be way ahead to find a dealer with a dyno.That way it can be loaded down and monitored to catch whats going on.

Have your ecm rebuilt, that might fix your injector problem

Have you read about the injector cups not sealing well and pushing combustion into fuel rail and misfiring injectors

iv seen ya rolling on the 401 and 400 a few times, always looks sharp👌and also i had a buddy that was chasing a vibration forever, thought it was drive line but it was actually one of the rear wheels had alot of runout, new wheel fixed it

I'm not mechanic by any means. But last time I saw. Those Cat engines have quite decent/beefy ECM. Just buy any cheap laptop with proper hardware, connector. Drive around and log stuff. Yes it cost few thousands for full kit. But you will be sorted for lifetime of the truck.

Hey man, I'm enjoying your stories.. How do you like those Double Coin tires? It's good to ask you because you actually put real weight on your truck. I've got some garbage Hankooks that separated on my car hauler trailer that were put on at the factory and caused a vibration it took me a couple years to track down. Since the tires still looked great, I never even considered them to be the problem. (The problem with assuming, eh?) The tires on the trailer had such a bad vibration that I thought it was in the drives of the truck. I've replaced everything on the tractor, driveline, tires, rims, drums, brakes, shocks and nothing fixed it. When you lift and spin the trailer tires, you can see how out of round they are though.. I have some Double Coin tires arriving today that will hopefully put this issue to bed.. Good luck man, you've got a nice setup and you will love having your own authority, it's worth every headache...

With the fuel filter issues have you checked the fuel tanks breathers lines for blockages?

I’ve been a owner driver for years and years with old trucks like you I am fussy and want it to run awesome all the time.but you are running through a lot of extremes as far as the weather goes down to minus 15 or 20 and all the way up to summer temperatures. And odd things happen unfortunately. This motor is very forgiving and you drive it super nice gentle on on it and really in tune with your truck 😊👍and it’s hard but don’t worry so much. I’ve found over the years old trucks and cars and old machines have little gremlins that even the truck dealers can’t fix or you’re just better off financially just living with them. Make peace with the gremlins and you won’t age so fast. 😅that’s my advice.

How much does CAT diagnostic software cost? Might be worth getting that way you can find which cylinder is missing while you're driving.
