Cambodia's Cham: "Between Modernity and Tradition" (Documentary by Germain Priour)

The Cham is an ethnic minority group living in parts of Cambodia and southern Vietnam. Its members are considered the descendants of the once-powerful Champa kingdom. The Cham people who live in Cambodia are predominantly Muslim, while those living in Vietnam are mostly Hindu. Today, many of the approximately 600,000 Cham people in Cambodia live along the country’s Mekong River, earning their living through fishing. French filmmaker Germain Priour worked with young Cham (film) students on this documentary, which introduces Cham culture with a special focus on the devastation that the Pol Pot regime brought upon the Cham. The film was part of the Meta House reparation project "The Cham and Pol Pot".

Greetings from me. I recently get too excited to learn about the true history of Cham and Cambodia as my mom is Cambodian Cham. She was married to an Indonesian which my late dad. I grew up weirdly understand all the Khmer and Cham language without having me to really learn, but now it slowly fades away which I realise it is something beautiful I was born with. I hope to learn about the real history, cultures and everything about Cham and Cambodia.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am Vietnamese Australian Hindu, and I find Cham culture so interesting as there is so much connection between Vietnam, Cham History and the Hindu Religion. Although now Vietnam is barely influenced by Hinduism culturally, documentaries like these really highlight how the Cham people live in countries like Cambodia. i think it is amazing that you are spreading awareness, and archiving these documents in order to preserve your culture. I really think this is an amazing job.

Does anyone here know where in Cambodia I could see Western Cham (Kak Khak) script in use, like on a sign or a mosque? I saw it exactly once: at the small mosque on top of Udom. I know Kan Imam San is the primary user and supporter of the resurgence of Kak Khak script in the past decade, Leb Ke being the main force behind it, but I've only ever seen Khmer, Latin, Arabic, and Jawi characters on anything Cham-related in Cambodia. Would love to know where I could see it!

@@evangelinemercado7511 thanks! Kampong Chhnang is where I've found some examples, none in Pursat yet but a good chance they're there and perhaps Battambang, too. Do you know of any samples in Kampong Cham, current or historical? My sense has been Sunni forms of Islam and use of Jawi has been pretty complete and total (hoping that's not 100% true).
@Mobobo1832
@Mobobo1832 Год назад
Kampong Chhnang is your best bet particularly in Srey Prey and Chankiek village near Sala Lek Pram. This area is primarily Cham Imam San and they have maintained the largest use of kak khak script. Otherwise the script can be found on old Cham homes and sang magik (mosques) spread throughout Kratie, Kampong Cham, and Kampong Chhnang. Usually the script is found on the outside of the house above the entryway. Jawi is more commonly used but some houses pre-1950 have kak khak

@@Mobobo1832 Thanks! I had definitely found O'Russey (along with the other two close by that you mentioned) and then many other villages following the southern side of the Tonlé Sap up through Pursat and Battambang - I keep seeing the KIS village(s) in Kratie mentioned in papers but haven't seen any photos or mention of which ones they are. I knew some of the oldest Kak Khak texts came from Kampong Cham but this comment is the first evidence I've heard about that there's still traces of it at least above doorways - in fact I didn't know about the home doorways, only on mosques, that's amazing that some of the houses with kak khak were preserved. Do you have any photos of this? Any particular villages I can check out on Google Maps? Really appreciate this new info.
@Mobobo1832
@Mobobo1832 Год назад
@@joshoakley4856 Hi Josh - regarding Kratie, I heard most (maybe all) of the Cham there are Cham Biruw now so they do not follow the Imam San way. I imagine however that there may be some homes/mosques with kak khak if they are old enough. I tried to find the one house I saw with kak khak in Krouch Chhmar on Google maps but I was unable to. The house I saw was near Svay Khleang. You might also find evidence of Kak Khak in old Cham cemeteries and in family heirlooms. This is likely going to be more prevalent in Vietnam in An Giang and Tay Ninh (the Cham here are like the Cham in Cambodia and therefore also use Kak Khak). I have heard from some families that they used to have old Cham swords and decorative boxes with kak khak inscribed on them. Are you specifically interested in kak khak alone? There are also manuscripts now written in Jawi but were originally in kak khak - many of these are stories still told among Cham in the KIS community as well as Cham in Phan Rang

With regards to celebrating to Prophet’s birthday. Most Muslims, even in Arab countries celebrate Mawlid. You have to realise that Arab Muslims are diverse themselves and they have slight differences. Most Saudis adhere to Hanbali with Athari creed and they tend to view mawlid as innovation. Most Muslims does not view this way.
