Don't forget the 29th through 30th dynasties, which were also ruled by egyptians. Sure they weren't as powerful as the 26th, but they were still independent.

My bad, I forgot the 28th (though it only had one ruler, goes to show that they had some trouble).

@@sebastianegypt1238 Yeah but they weren’t really powerful and didn’t do much. Under them egypt was more a rebellious province than anything seeing as how the Persians eventually regained control. The Saite dynasty was rather successful seeing as how it threw out the Assyrians, defeated the Nubians and lybians, and fended off the Babylonians (admittedly after an unsuccessful attempt at conquering lands in the near East).

@@kemet8819 As I said, more of a rebellious province than anything. They broke off and held the Persians at bay for awhile but never really amounted to much in comparison with the 26th dynasty or other older dynasties.

Hi, thanks for stopping by. Could be but I think in those days there weren't as anti-Persian as later on under Darius. Only the Greeks in Ionia were under Persian rule and to be honest before that, they were under the Lydians which I don't think were that much better. Yeah I agree. That's why I think it's important to also look at the Egyptian records...this is a classic example of two sides or portrayals of the same person. I don't necessarily think that Herodotus always intended to lie, but he was only as good as his sources, and obviously there was no way to fact check them. Plus, he had sensationalize it a bit for his Athenian audience. Yeah, he's one of those characters from ancient history the more we find, the less we know. Up until the 19th century, all we had on Cambyses came from Herodotus. It's only in the last 150 years that he's been shown in a different light due to the findings of archaeology. I personally think he was somewhere in between - I'm sure that he had to put down his share of dissent while in Egypt which didn't endear him to the Egyptians, and so the stories of his cruelty probably stemmed from there. In many other parts of the Histories he does try to give other sides to the same event, but we also have to remember that his work was designed to be read in front of an Athenian audience that was hostile to Persians (for the reasons you stated), so I guess he had to add some sensationalism else it wouldn't sell with his audience... kind of like many media outlets today I guess. Yeah, it's strange that there could be such a change from father to son, but it's happened at in other places too - I was writing something about Cypselus for one of my future videos on ancient Greece - he was the ruler/tyrant of Corinth who was universally loved by his people, but his son was the complete opposite and cruel. I'm not saying that the same is for Cambyses... I personally think he may have been stricter with the Egyptians because of all the peoples of the ancient world, I think that they despised being ruled by others more than anyone else. This seems to have been the case ever since the Hyksos invaded many centuries before. I think that Cambyses probably thought that he needed to be stricter to keep them in line, but not to the extent that Herodotus says. Remember, Herodotus was getting his information from Egyptians who probably hated Persian rule and then writing for a Greek audience that had just been invaded by both Darius and later Xerxes just a few decades before, so to make the Persian king a villain no doubt would make his work popular in places like Athens! Hi, thanks for your comment and feedback, appreciate it. Unfortunately for Cambyses, with the exception of the Behistun inscription of Darius, there are no Persian sources with details of his reign. Thus, we have to rely on the words of classical writers for much of our information. Trust me, as someone who can read Old Persian, I would love to read Achaemenid and Persian sources, but alas, they don't exist. Perhaps one day they will be found, but until then, Greek sources are mostly all that we have. Thanks for watching!
