This is a side-by-side comparison of the recording quality of the NV-GS400 (PAL version of the PV-GS400) and the HC-X900M.
If you've got an NV-GS400 or PV-GS400 and you're considering an upgrade to one of their newer, HD models, check this out and see what you think.
My opinion? The NV-GS400 was a good camera (it blew my old Sharp VL-PD1H out of the water). This time the HC-X900M blows the NV-GS400 out of the water. Only in the very, very darkest scenes can the NV-GS400 outperform it, but only just.

That's correct. It's a side-by-side comparison between what was once a £1000 SD 3CCD camcorder and what is now a £900 HD 3MOS camcorder. Those with a "prosumer" SD camcorder can judge for themselves whether they want to step forward into the world of prosumer HD or stick with what they've got.

You're exactly the sort of person I did the comparison for, someone who's got a very nice prosumer SD camcorder and is thinking about the leap to HD. The best way to view the test would be on a full-HD TV or monitor. The HC-X900M footage is scaled 50% horizontally (a 2x2 pixel block becomes 1x2), the NV-GS400 footage is cropped to 540 high then scaled 200% vertically and 133% horizontally (a 3x2 pixel block becomes 4x4) to keep any rescaling fuzziness to a minimum.

Good test.. Thank you.. You just stopped me bidding on the older one as the newer is definitely much better.. But I can appreciate that some people may just love and prefer that older footage..

If anything i think the one on the left has more vivid colour but the right one handles the light conditions better, and is clearer.

Sony Vegas Pro 9. As I don't need the 50p frame rate for a 25p RU-vid vid I switch off resampling when I bring in HC-X900M media, this makes it drop every other frame instead of trying to merge each pair. The NV-GS400 is set to 720x576 25p anyway (except in low-light mode where it disables autofocus and switches to 50i).

If you cross your eyes and merge the two images into one, you can see everything in 3D since the cameras are providing two slightly separate views of the same scene. This is a pretty cool effect!

I bought the NV-GS400 direct from Panasonic when it was launched, then a few years later spotted the HDC-TM900 and its siblings but waited until the HC-X900M was released. They've brought out the HC-X920 now which adds wifi streaming capability.

The HC-X900M isn't being shown to the best of its capabilities as the horizontal resolution's been halved to fit it on the screen for side-by-side testing. Take a look at the road markings at the 1:32 mark, the difference is fairly pronounced there, especially when viewed in full-screen HD.

Just found your camera comparison some many years later, very good but mine (GS-400) doesn't have the colour difference that you demonstrate. This is something which can be changed within the menu settings. What mine has developed is card error which I am unable to rectify even after formatting. I am using a 16Gb Kingston SD card.

This makes an interesting impromptu stereo camera setup. I crossed my eyes to merge the footage and got an interesting 3D-ish effect. Nice!

The NV-GS400 (the old one, on the left) is 3CCD. The HC-X900M is 3MOS.

I just read this comment while the advert was playing (I don't skip so hopefully you get some $) and ended up watching the whole vid x-eyed for the 3D :D will have to watch again for the comparison ;)

@silkynitro your privacy settings won't let anyone reply to your comments. I've just tested my NV-GS400, it seems that Bass Enhance is not available if your camera is in Pro Cinema mode.

I haven't tried that yet. I wasn't going to as the lenses are different (you've got to zoom the HC-X900 in slightly to get the same field of view), but I might have a go later :)

I did tweak the colour balance, but when switched back to auto this is what you get. Under low light though, the one on the right seems to be a bit more colourful.

The lenses are slightly different so it's tricky to do with these cameras. The effect would be much better with a VW-CLT2 3D converter lens (which the HC-X900M takes) or with a second HC-X camera, either a HC-X800, 900 or 900M.

They can suffer from wobble, I think it's sometimes referred to as "jello-cam", due to the way the image is read off the chip. I've not noticed any (and the cameras did bounce about a bit when I took off in the car) but it's noticeable on some vids where people have sent CMOS cameras up on RC planes, hexacopters and such like. The 300 will be similar I expect to my 400 (apparently the best of the NV-GS ones, the 500 was worse from what I've read).

The driving bit works well :) Some of the other bits aren't so eye-friendly though. At least they're on the correct side (the HC-X900M - which your left eye will look at if you go cross-eyed - was on the left hand side of the tripod).

How do you change the base enhance on NV-GS400 I can find base enhance however it won't let me change the db levels Do I have to put the camera in a different setting. All I'm getting is Base enhance - - -

I think you've got to copy the whole BDMV folder structure, rather than just the video files. I've never done it myself but I seem to remember reading about that somewhere. Google should come up with the goods.

The newer HC is all over the NV model. Far more natural colours and better light use, especially at twilight. Tech and values moved fast

Hi, I have just buy the X800 (same recording quality of X900) to record live music concerts where there are so called "fuck'in volume!": this camera can fix recording audio volume at -30db (max) with great playback audio quality.

It wouldn't surprise me. Look at the background image on my channel (right-click and view it if you can) and judge for yourself whether that looks like a camcorder rig or a speed trap? :)
