Twenty three camels were imported to British Columbia in 1862 at the onset of the Cariboo Gold Rush. The camels were used as pack animals travelling the Cariboo Wagon Road from Lilliooet to the gold fields. Unfortunately the experiment didn’t go well. In this video we explore how the camels came to BC, why they didn’t work out, and what eventually happened to them.

The camels were brought in from Mongolia, but I thought it was such an interesting story.

Such an incredible tale! And how could anyone mistake a camel for a grizzly bear, really?! Great video and great story - loved it!

Glad you enjoyed the video. I thought that was strange as well, but perhaps they were similar colour and shaggy fur. Thanks for watching and your comment!

We just drove the gold rush trail/wagon trail this weekend. We were at the 23 camel bridge and thought that's strange lol.

Very interesting bit of BC history. Did you know that the US army experimented with using camels in the 1850's?

Yes, I think that is how Laumeister may have gotten the idea.

Hey Salty Beaver Explores, currently loving the videos. I'd personally like to request a video about the famous Rocket candies. Would love to hear your input on the different flavours. Thank you so much !

Hello! Thank you so much for watching, your kind comment and the suggestion. I had a quick look and Rockets are unfortunately not Canadian... I actually thought they were too! I do plan on making some more videos in the future about Canadian snacks/sweets
