An engine tends to be more fuel efficient at or around full open throttle than at part throttle. At least that's my understanding as an auto mechanic. I think it also deals with how much air is flowing and the throttle plate acts like a choke at partial. The more cool air the better as well.

G'day, Good luck with that. Anthropogenic Global Warming means that EITHER Humanity will totally cease to burn Fossil Fuels within 8.5 Years..., OR we will continue to make shit get forever worse - and the Intense Extreme Weather Events will worsen to the point where NO level of EcoGnomic Activity is possible. Either way, if Jimmy's boys are still alive in 10 years, they might be telling a lot of stories about, "When their Father used to take them flying...(!)". But they will NOT be going flying unless they have a Hang Glider and a Hill they can walk it up, before jumping off to glide back down. Change IS afoot. Such is life... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

Usually, it goes the opposite way: if parents _make_ kid dance or climb mountains - he will eventually come to hating those activities by his puberty age and go as far from those as possible. On the other hand, being close to someone as sneaky and entrepreneurial as Jimmy may lay useful skills that his son would utilize in completely different area.

Invaluable lesson learned, I only use plastic bags, and place them on a table, stool or chair, no tools or hardware rests on plane when working. I dropped a retention nut from a master relay when I had the carpet out of a Bonanza and it went down into the fuselage by the rudder pedals. Took me 3 days of 3-4 hours of work to take out more interior and find it. Lesson learned. Absolutely love your content Jimmy!

We used a tape with adhesive on one side that was applied to a 2" wide strip 0.008" thick annealed aluminum... We called it 600 mph tape, and it was used for covering areas that had aerodynamic sealant (PS 870, 1436, etc.) put into some expansion gaps. This was done to enable the aircraft to fly - without allowing the sealant to streak across the plane during it's revenue generating flight... It worked quite well !!! Use a flat piece of flexible plastic to apply the tape onto the plane, (like the body guys use - to apply Bondo)... Some things to know, removing the wax with a rag soaked with alcohol helps the tape to bond to the plane, and using naptha on a rag can help to remove the unwanted adhesive on the plane, that was left behind, from the tape... It might remove paint where it's not bonded very well... Have fun and fly safe!!!

I think making Cameron a speed king is interesting. Your idea of taping the gaps was done in unlimited racing in the 1940s and 1950s. Many years ago I read the autobiography of Tony LeVier who was a test pilot (chief pilot I think) for Lockheed during that period. He went into detail about taping seals and joints. I see that you’re planning engine work. Actually I think your limiting factor is the prop. Unless it’s pitched for max rpm at top speed you’re losing efficiency. You need either a fixed pitch tuned that way or you need some type of variable pitch or constant speed prop. You may also want to look at engine cooling drag. You may want to contact the participants of the Reno Air Races. Their “sport plane” builders have already solved the issues that you’re having. I’ve been watching your vids since your first Cherokee 6 vids. I look forward to them. Best of luck to you.

Glad you figured out the gear door gremlin. The sun shield above your head is also sliding off the frame. No biggy but it's not something that you would want falling down on you during a landing. Any distraction is not good. A little dab of CA glue will hold it in place.Silas is a lucky guy getting all of that free instruction!! Did you know that Silas is old enough to fly a glider right now? He certainly has earned it though with the fine job of filming your show. The sideways crabbing is definitely drag from the wing cam.

Jimmy, even though the cowl screws are Stainless, it depends on which type of Stainless, as some are mildly magnetic. There are probably 50 types of alloys that qualify as Stainless. Get a hold of a neodymium or samarium cobalt magnet and attach it to a coat hanger and fish for your screw. A strong magnet can be found in a wide gap door contact for an alarm system. Magnets that are hidden in doors for jamb switches are usually strong too.

Great video! I always enjoy those where you feature the Lancair and seeing you encourage your son in getting involved with aviation. One thing I'd like to point out is that taping string on the front of the canopy isn't going to help. The disturbance from the prop will give you a false indication. The string trick only works on gliders or pushers.

Back in the 1980s I had just failed my first instrument rating check ride and while flying back to the airport we suffered a hole in the right side windshield. (Piper Seneca). On the ground no indication could be found as to what caused the hole. The windshield was patched and the next pilot to fly found the cause. The right propeller had a perfect impression of a screw in the leading edge. At the time I was doing my test at a nearby VOR there was a Tobago also using that VOR above me. Apparently the screw fell from the Tobago, fell into my prop and was then flung through the windshield.

Jimmy, I noticed a build up of just plain old dirtyness around Cameron's landing gear assembly. I have the same problem on my motorcycles, in places I can't reach to clean well. I use a product called "S-100" that's available at most motorcycle shops to clean those hard to get to places. You can get it in a kit with a hand squeeze pump; but it's much easier to use by just buying the large refill bottles, pouring them into a garden sprayer, pumping it up and just spraying it on the dirty areas. Once you spray it on, you can immediately hose it off, and the area will be clean. Usually, there's no scrubbing required at all. If the crud's really heavy you may have to lightly touch the area with a sponge, parts brush, etc. to break it loose. Also, I'm a notorious cheapskate, so I cut the S-100 by 50% with water to make it go farther. Give it a try, you'll like the results.

The pilots used to extend them before needing them to act as a speed brake. The C182s I'm used to have a Cruz speed of 122 knots. You get a 182rg with the same performing engine, 145 knots. No wonder your go fast tape increases performance.

The yaw string propably won't work because of the prop. It even affects gliders in aero tow and they are like 40m behind

Correctly gapping the plugs is where you got the lower fuel burn and smoother power from.

Jimmy, I love your show please keep it up.. Just a small thing that may or may not be the same in the US but regarding your tongue in cheek comment about Isopropyl alcohol. For cleaning I buy 99% IPA not the lower percentages. Anything lower than 99% is also called rubbing alcohol and they add slippy things to it to make it easier to rub on, things like talcum powder. If you have tape pealing off places you've cleaned with rubbing alcohol it might be the talc ;

I use a shop vac with a very small nozzle to get stuff out of tiny places It pays to have extra bolts and screws that are always getting lost too

8 spark plugs, my late father-in-law worked on P&W R4360 with 28 cylinders, he’d laugh at your tiny engine.

I didn't know two goobers could wear a tiny airplane at the same time 😆. You guys make a great team. Hopefully, when the time comes, you and Silas will share videos of Silas going through flight training. Love the videos, keep 'em coming. Stay safe. (Cameron vs. the Silver Bullet vs. the T6)
