Took me an embarrassingly long time to realise these adapters existed. Bought the one you have here, because it looks the best, but also nice and compact. (Mainly the looks).I use the small cans for long hikes so will now reap the rewards of not having to buy a new small can and the bonus of not seeing 5 cans on near empty kicking around the house. Thanks.

Super useful of you want to go out for 2 nights and not carry a full 4oz can with you. Refill just what you will use plus a little more.

You can refill the green propane cylinders from the much larger BBQ propane tanks. USA a coupler with a hose because you have to turn the BBQ rank upside down also. Great video! I learned a lot. Thanks

Great information! I didn't know there were so many options for fuel and connections.

Yes, it's what makes it confusing at first. The simple thing though is that most backpacking stoves will work with a variety of fuels. The different fuels are their purpose in different situations though.

My main reason to refill canisters would be, I can use the smaller isopro canister, refill it with butane, which is cheaper but normally comes in those thinner, taller canisters. And I do believe butane is more widely available.

Thanks Jay, great information! I refill green propane tanks, and rather than putting them in the freezer, I release pressure by pressing down on the valve in the center of the port. Couldn't you do the same with the canisters by removing the top (full) canister and opening the valve to bleed off some pressure in the lower, allowing more fuel into the space created?

I refill the small isobutane canisters once empty with the cheaper larger butane cans. You absolutely need to chill the isobutane canisters and I will only do it once they're empty enough they don't work anymore. You can refill several times on the same little 4-5 dollar canisters but you need to watch the weight as overfilling isn't good. Never go above the initial weight listed on the canister. Normally I do 80% of the default filled weight just to make sure I don't have pressure issues. The nice thing about all of this and why I do it is that if you know you're not going to be below 35F or so, you can refill your hiking or small cookset canister for cheap and it will still work. If you're below about 40F, put the little canister in your pocket or armpit before you use it in the morning. Get it warmed up and it will sputter and cause less issues with the cheaper butane. If you're going out where freezing is a real possibility, these refills(and the original butane cans) simply do not work well. Stick with isobutane or propane depending on if you're carrying that weight or vehicle camping.
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 2 года назад
Yep, butane has a much higher evaporation point than isobutane so it's horrible in the cold. I do have the adapter to refill camp canisters from the butane but I just using isobutane propane mixes.

Learned a lot! Thank you Do you have to wait til the canister is empty before you refill and can you top off? I have an almost empty isobutane canister and would like to refill with butane so I can bring 1 full can of fuel
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut Год назад
Nope, you don't have to wait. In fact it's better that it is never completely empty so no outside air ever gets in and potentially rust the inside. Always use a kitchen scale to see how much you refill.

Dump all of those tanks Jay. Get a “Flame King 5# Mini” propane tank, $52 at Home Depot. Those green tanks will empty your wallet ($3 plus - per canister)... real fast while car camping. Refill the Flame King at any local gas station or UHaul lot that also sells propane for just about what you pay for one (1) Coleman tank currently. Found that this set up is much, much cheaper than the disposable 16oz tanks. The little Flame King tank is about the size of a 1/2 gallon milk carton, and it stows away easily. Amazon sales this too, Flame King YSN5LB. Tank is sold empty upon purchase. BTW, don’t forget to take Home Depot up on their discount!

I have a 1 gallon one but I never used it. I don't cook super often so over 1.5 months I'm still on the same 1 lb propane tank and on a 2nd butane tank. I use a thermal cooker when I cook so I just need to get the contents to a boil, put it inside the insulated container then wait 2 hours and everything's cooked. I've even used my Solo Titan wood burning stove for longer cook things when it's not windy and there are branches to burn.

Its the same thing propaine and butaine. Its just marketed differently. Propane is in commercial operations, butane is domestic general use. It not a gas untill its gone through the stoves vortex like a carbeurretor in a car. Until that happens its in liquid form. Colman marke low temperature cylinder but you anly need that at -10 or 20 'C. The do it under the extreame label blue tins.
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut Год назад
Propane and butane are different chemical compounds with different evaporation temperatures and pressures. You'll see that purely butane canisters are made of much thinner metal than propane only canisters because it has a much much lower PSI. If you try to store pure propane in something meant for a combination mix the pressure could be too much for the canister and cause a failure.

Do you keep the canisters in the car while parked in the sun during a hot day?
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 4 года назад
Yes. I have a thermometer in the car that measures max and min so I can see how hot it got while I was away. I keep the back windows cracked with a fan running against it hooked up to a battery bank so it can run all day. I also make every attempt to park in the shade by getting places early then using the Sun Position app to determine the path of the sun. The big thing too is letting your car get as cool as it can overnight so it has that cool thermal mass to keep things cool. My solar charge controller also has a thermometer so I can see what the temperature is like lower in the car. Some would say it's all dangerouns but what else can you do?
@66bigbuds
@66bigbuds Год назад
Isobutane has some Isopropyl alcohol as an antifreeze. But yes it does have it's limits.
@Red_Proton
@Red_Proton 2 года назад
As butane/propane moves out of the tank, it will cool. This happens on BBQ grills with any size tank. So, tank size doesn't matter, where it's moving to doesn't matter, and the temperature of its destination (like another tank) doesn't matter. The fact that it's moving is what causes it to cool. It's not absorbing cold from the other tank.

Great overview but I think your not clear on your gas pressures. You note 858 for propane at 21 C. You don’t show the units you’re talking about although I believe you’re talking kilopascals which no one uses in casual conversation. This definitely is not pounds per square inch for propane at 70°F is ~122 psi. I’ve heard of people using propane 100% in these. So it does sound like the tank can take the pressure if you keep the temperature at a low point And the volume below the standard 80%. I’m not gonna try it though. Thanks for posting. Love the cabinet works on the back of your truck for storage!

The canister valves are not designed to be used that much. If you do they will eventually fail in the 'open' position and release the remaining contents. Dangerous, and if you lose your fuel out on a trip then that's a bummer.

New to me. I have not tried refilling any of the canisters. But I see Lixada adapter has a gas release button. while the filler and refill canisters are connected, you can press the gas release button to remover the back pressure and then open the value again to get more liquid fuel into the refill. That's a pretty domineering trick to only give your girlfriend enough fuel to get back to you, just kidding. Lixada : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ep164ztBhuQ.html

Quite a nice video Jay, especially the science about different types of gas, but... Could you get out of the habit of constantly slapping things, it gets pretty annoying. One chap who use to put a lot of great videos out seemed to have a brakedown or something & while reviewing a back pack, he must've slapped it around 200 times & he must've called it a 'bad boy' maybe 100 times. While there's nothing wrong with that, it just gets very tedious to watch, so I gave up watching him, although he did disappear a few months later, so hope he's OK?

Really a few onces is going to hamper someone's backpacking i think they need to remove their lazy selves from in front of the TV and stop pretending they are ruffing it 😂 just like the idiots that wont bring a bic and insists on a feral rod, freeze sucker. Ps don't fill a butien tank with prpein the valves are different for a huge reason, want too hurt yourself go ahead try it.
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 3 года назад
You must have missed the part or not understood when I said not to put propane in a isobutane tank not because of valves, it's the pressure they exert. You should try thru hiking and see if ounces matter or not.
