Horses for courses. In the Vic Highcountry in winter, the old Coleman petrol stove is king... Gas freezes up and you have to constantly tip warm water on them to keep them going. Mine is 20 years old and still going strong.

After replacing the stand which went missing somewhere during a few moves, the Jetboil is a great bit of kit for making my morning coffee while boondocking in my tiny camper.

I did similar comparison with friends and each boiling two cups of water. Amazingly, my alcohol survival burner made from a beer can can do it in 8 minutes. And that was cold water from a tap in a campground. Cost? 5 cents. Height: 1 and 3/4 inch. Hard to beat. I taught my daughter and all the kids in the family how to make one using only a utility knife. Good to take when you are on foot, bicycle or in a bugout bag. Prefers 92% alcohol or better.

The best cookers I've tried are the Swedish made Optimus 111T single burner and 55 or 155 dual burner. They burn kerosene, "Coleman fuel" or alcohol with their dedicated jets. Unless you want a lightweight backpacking stove, these are top quality and lasts a lifetime. I may be partial since both the Optimus stoves and myself are Swedish and the kerosene gasifier stove pretty much was developed here. Any quality burner will cook but only the best will last a lifetime.

While the burner does make a difference for boil time, the major difference cimes from within the water container. Mainly the shape and the materiels and thicknesses involved. A wider base pot with same thickness material will obviously boil water faster because of surface area that comes in cibtact with the flame. Also the alloy in the material will have different heat transfering properties.

The MSR has a bigger burner , therefor that larger area is going to heat more the water in a shorter time and probably use more gas . My Jet boil has a handle on the side so it can be used as a cup, it has a coffee plunger , a saucepan, a fry pan . The gas bottle and the cooker fit into the cup and it is light ,packs up small and is easy to carry on the hill

What?! The cheapest one was $100ish and the most expensive $280, someone is having a laugh surely? None of them are worth anything close to that amount. The MSR Reactor costs as much as a Travel Buddy but where is the value in it? Shocking over-pricing. I think I will stick with a kettle on top of the gas cooker and wait a few minutes longer. Not a surprising result given the MSR is so highly rated everywhere, however you should have weighed the gas canisters before & after to see which is the more efficient to add another layer of depth to the test. On another note, I hope you weighed that pop up tent to ensure you were under GVM given it was a "fishing trip" & all the (liquid) "fishing gear" you are required to carry 😉

I would like to state that the MSR reactor does not boil water hotter at the same atmospheric conditions than the other two. It just is not possible without pressurising the water in the can on top of the "fire". Yet the can coming with the MSR Reactor is better insulated than your compared devices, thus it boiled faster and keept the heat energy longer and thus made you feel as it would have been hoter just by the other two becoming cooler in the time between extincting the fires and preparing the coffee itself.

@gnawershreth
@gnawershreth 4 года назад
Things can vary a bit depending on where you are though. They're at sea level and it may be a bit windy which may obviously makes things less effective or at least cool things down a bit. At sea level water boils at 100 °C (212 °F) but at high altitudes it actually boils at a lower temperature due to lower atmospheric pressure. For every 150 m (~500 ft) the boiling point is lowered by approximately 0.5 °C. Here's a couple of examples from Wikipedia: 2,000 ft (610 m) 208.4°F (98°C) 6,000 ft (1829 m) 201.1°F (94°C) 15,000 ft (4572 m) 184.1°F (84.5°C) So if you happen to live at relatively high altitude it's actually quite a difference so it should obviously be quite a bit faster. It's also something to keep in mind if you're boiling water to purify it. If we imagine a scenario where you have some bacteria that's killed at 95 °C then obviously it won't be enough to simply get water to boil at high altitudes since it'll start boiling before you've reached the required temperature. It's one of those things that people don't really think about although it affects so many people every single day. We just always think of water boiling at 100 °C (212 °F) but for a lot of people that simply isn't the case in their kitchen. :P
@gnawershreth
@gnawershreth 4 года назад
Something's seriously strange if it's 90 secs no matter where you're using it. That simply doesn't sound right considering the fact that water boils at different temperatures at different altitudes. Is the desert still roughly at sea level? If so that explains it. If it takes the same amount of time to get water to 90°C and to get it to 100°C something weird is going on with your gear. Hehe Obviously it should be quicker to get water to 90°C than to get it to 100°C. It'd be interesting if you folks could try it out at altitude, it should be quicker than at sea level after all. If it's still always 90 secs something weird is going on, almost like they added a "hard limit" on the cooker. :P

Whilst I'm a fan of science & what has been said is definitely verifiable with regards the boiling point of water at altitude, it's seriously overthinking a simple operation. Personally I'd say the ambient temperature & starting temperature of the water has more of an effect than altitude, & is far more likely to delay the boil. That said, 90ish seconds sounds about right for a jetboil, however I've never measured it as it's definitely quicker than my other stoves & uses less gas to get there, which is all I really need to know.
