what impressed me seriously with this build as opposed to all the others I have watched is that you didn’t have 79 million power tools a huge garage with every possible convenient accessory needed to build this little beauty. it is so rare to see a person do something like this on RU-vid. That doesn’t have every imaginable power tool available. just a simple guy (said with deep respect) making do with brains and adaptabilities. thank you so much for a video that shows the average person can do this with the average amount of household tools. 👍🏻
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for that very correct observation. I am just one guy, minimal tools, minimal budget, minimal experience. If you stick at something anyone can do this. I am helping others get into camper conversions because I love this hobby so much now. It’s very wasteful what happens to older campers that all can have a second life and probably a longer second life. I actually had an RV shop that did my bearings say, these home built campers like your are actually better built and more durable than when it was new. Lots of them have leaking issues within a few years. Rodents get inside too because they are not sealed. All very true statements. I used to have a mouse problem until I improved the insulation. If you like this build I do other projects as well. I am also still adding to my camper. Thank you for the comment and if you haven’t already, please subscribe.

Yes very realistic build. Damn thing looks great and it works. Thank you for sharing it. I'm wanting to do a 18-20 foot drop ramp cargo trailer conversion so I can take my dirt bike out. I want a bathroom and shower in the nose and the ability to be self contained for several days. Will require a battery bank, generator, and water tanks. Someday!

@@hoffmanshaven I ride as well got a quad and dirt bike. I was trying to figure out an easy way to haul it. My thought is exactly as your idea. 18’ trailer. The end a ramp and open. Then build a box camper in the front. When the bike isn’t on back it can serve as a deck for offgrid camping and riding. If you start a build hopefully you share it with me. I would love to see what you come up with. I really want to build a bigger camper now. I loved doing this one so much. I really want to do a shower inside. Anyways stay tuned more updates coming. Who knew that old popup could turn into a usable hard side camper? So many ideas watching this. That back splash looks great. Glad you were able to reuse the stove and sink. The level was a smart addition. Happy to see you gel coated those outside walls and the decal turned out nice. Great job.

Thank you! Yeah its funny I had several people tell me to scrap it, I said not today! lol I really want to do a bigger one now. I like trying to keep it lower weight, just because it saves on MPG. People that build these from scratch and usually spent $5,000-$6,000 and while that's not bad, I did mine soooo much cheaper, and it is just as durable, lightweight, with all the creature comforts. Restoration ALWAYS takes longer than new builds.

Total respect for you, man. I have a Rockwood popup that was taken over by ants and termites (& didn't know). Had it all open...was using it to watch football and hang out with my buddies. We had a freak snow storm while I was at work and my kid happened to drive by and saw that the upright supports had gone thru the roof 😮😮. None of the camper repair places wanted to work on it, and one of the managers I know told me that there's very little expectation for the longevity of a pop-up, and recommended I turn it into a utility trailer 😂. It's been sitting in the yard, covered with a tarp bcs I didn't even know where to begin; - like someone else said, almost all of the RU-vid videos about rehab'ing popups the guys have huge garages and every power tool imaginable, and unlimited resources, professional skills and knowledge. But, your video has definitely inspired me to get to work on that camper, and I just wanted to Thank you for the time and frank, open honesty you put into the video. Great job 👍👍👍

Thank you so much for seeing and realizing the challenges I had. I completely built this with my own 2 hands and a small tool box of tools. I started building this in the fall and worked on it straight through winter in subzero temps. No shelter, no garage to work in, no heat, nada. You can see how bundled up I was for a lot of the video. I have watched other RU-vidrs with big garages and insane budgets do less than I have. So I’m pretty proud of that. It was a labor of love and determination. Now I am hooked and want to try something else. I am still working on this camper too. My goal is to get all amenities in a mini camper. I have shot a couple camping videos too and I hope to start camping again this year when it gets a little warmer than 0f out. Let me know if you need any help or ideas on your camper. Everyone says just turn it into a haul trailer. You can have a lot more with a little hard work. Please Subscribe to follow the action.

My mom used to have a camper just like that. We went on a 10-day camping trip. On about day 8, it rained heavy one night, and because it was an older camper, the rain puddle in the canvas over my bed. The rotting thread gave way, and I ended up under a waterfall of cold water. Luckily, a friend had room for me to sleep in their house for the last couple of nights of the event we were at. So it was good to see that you couldn't save the canvas, I would never have a trailer with canvas pull outs after what happened to me. Just a suggestion, in the recess under your Murphy bed, build a fold down table, and/or a book rack, maybe both.
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
Oh no! That’s awful! I couldn’t imagine how cold that must have been. I’ve had many days tent camping in the rain storms, blizzards, with tent failures so I know how that must of felt. Having a hardside camper that is cozy is so nice for me. That is a great idea with the fold out table under the Murphy bed. I will work on a design. I also really like the bookshelf idea to keep some books I travel with in. Maybe above the Murphy bed what do you think? Anyways thank you for the story and please subscribe if you haven’t already. I've lived in my popup Coleman camper (Some version model of a Coleman 2003 year model) through all 4 seasons. I understand the carpeting over the linoleum as it's far simpler to just lay pre-cut, non-secured carpet down and just scoop it out once a month and shake/beat it down outside than to be obsessive compulsive on the linoleum every day to keep it clean-ish. Also, the underside flooring is not insulated in any way so it adds a layer of thermal barrier of cold insulation in the winter during the coldest part- the floor. I have survived off a single 110 outlet using a $20 electric space heater from Wal-mart and have added a 5k BTU AC Window unit mounted in front of the screen window because the roof AC condensates enough to cause water damage to the roof, which I remedied with an above-ground pool liner thrown over the top, which helps with falling limbs from above trees. In hindsight, a heat/ac 10-13k mini-split heat pump retrofit would have been a much better economical choice considering all running costs in totality and is not "off-grid" but I'm poor and homeless, so options are few. My canvas is quickly deteriorating daily under sunlight UV rays as I have it setup and came across your video as a possible cheap upgrade/retrofit. I do wonder about just epoxying the canvas while it's still intact and has it's form. I have also considered using truck bed-liner (e.g. Rhinoliner, LineX, Raptorliner etc) or some other sort of plasticizer to embed within the canvas and just touch up spraying as needed if/when it flakes up or off although I have not seen anyone on youtube do this yet. Either way I appreciate your video upload of your determination. Thank you.
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 11 дней назад
I’m sorry to hear that you are homeless I wish you the best of luck and hang in there. Hmm I am thinking what if you built a thin shell out of that really thin plywood on the inside of the canvas after waterproofing it of course. After that have you heard of “poor man’s fiberglass"? All it is is wood glue and cloth and people have built entire campers out if it. maybe do this on top of the canvas. After that paint it to waterproof it. Sure the cost is more and it's going to be harder. I think this is a good longer term plan. Anything you do like this will reduce its road worthiness though I think. Popups I dont think are strong enough to travel popped unless you frame it like I did. So if you are permanently setup this might be an idea. Sure the painting of a Truck bed liner is going to be cheaper and also probably work as well. I do recommend Flex seal. I think in your case the spray kind works and it cones in a wide range of colors. I like it a lot because heat and cold it stays strong. It stays flexible too as it's a spray rubber. Well anyways let me know what you wind up doing and how it works out. Please Subscribe and you should do a RU-vid channel too it's fun and you can make a little side money.

I am glad I brought back some happy memories! I think some people grew up handy and others grew up something else... For example I have zero interest in sports and I am not good at any of them, which is typically a men thing. Also societal norms are changing a bit, I know a lot of women from my Wife's Jeep club, that are very into off-roading. Girls never did this when I grew up. Do I think the majority of men over women are more into tools and construction, yes... but it's not a definitive thing, its just the majority or norm. Also being a Craftsmen and knowing the things I do is a hobby I have had for 30 years or so, that I learned little by little. The trick is to just do it, do not fear failure or reticule. Honestly anyone can learn this stuff if they have a little fortitude and keep at it. Thank you again for your great comment and if you need help I can also give you great advice on how to do anything. I am helping a few of my other subscribers build one right now too. It's what I was missing for sure. All my videos are a little too detailed and not as fun to watch. This one flows nicely. I hope I blow up like all these other camper builders. I haven't got as many views as them. I follow BlackSpruce and he has 1million views on his build, I would be happy with a 1/10th of that lol. The stringing of videos is because this has been a 2 year project, some people will film each video and wait until done and make 1 awesome video instead of installments, while that is awesome for getting a million views its hard because it means a TON of work and remembering what you did when and a very organized format. When we film videos for RU-vids even though they seem like they run long at times, they are edited a ton. I usually film like 20 hours and it compresses usually to 20min. So its an art for sure, there is easily often more time spent filming and editing than the actual work, which really adds a ton of time invested.
@lemarch57
@lemarch57 8 месяцев назад
@@Jeep-Creep Your rebuild of the camper is an impressive success, and the fact that you spent so much time videoing/editing can be deemed a great success as well. While you may not have the views yet, the quality of the video is as well done as the actual build and I think you’ll start seeing that number pick up as time goes on. This time of year may be slow for views because people are settling into winter and not as interested in camping themed videos. I suspect the longer this video is up, the more people will become aware of it and it is going to become very popular; you certainly deserve the views and the information you’re sharing is fascinating and inspiring. Thank you again for this video; I’ve subscribed and will be watching for the maiden voyage of your rebuild 🙂

@@lemarch57 Thank you so much for the kind feedback. It gets hard at times not to envy others I follow success with views. Honestly it’s very rewarding to get this kind of feedback from my viewers. I do really enjoy this kind of work and I hope to inspire and give others vision of a fun project like this, that can be done by anyone on a minimal budget. I have been also complemented by an RV Trailer Repair shop for my build quality when I had them double check the suspension and repack and inspect axle. So that meant a lot too. He states that even new trailers leak because they are so thin and cheap on materials and only goal is to build as fast as possible and cheap as possible. He says more and more 2 year old trailers leak and then have major rotting issues. I kept this in mind when I built and understand how seams fail over time. I used all stainless steel, aluminum, rubber coat, and gel coat (for boat hulls) when building so this camper lasts as long as possible. Stay tuned I do have more work to do on it. Finish water system, clean up electrical system. ☺️

@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
@@davidwalesby2426 yes for sure. Since room is tight I would have loved having a hard slide out. Only issue for one is weight, I’m at 1660lbs now axle rated for 2000lbs. Second issue, structural integrity, the slides use plastic wheels on a aluminum frame. They also need to be supported from the bottom. Third, room inside, slides have to go somewhere when in travel. So your inside has to fold up to make room. Another plan is to have permanent slide out bunks. But again it’s not a strong design. If you want bunks on the ends you should just stick to a longer trailer and the box design. I have considered building a bigger trailer. Mi e is 6x6 I was thinking doing a 6x12 just for beds and bathroom. Anyways if you haven’t please subscribe

Thank you! Yeah I used all sorts of materials to keep the costs down while building a super durable air tight build. I am so super happy with the way it came out, the only thing is now is I wish I went a little bigger, so I can do a bathroom and a shower. I could just do a outdoor shower setup though. I do like that it is super light weight about 1600lbs and it tows so easily. Saves me a ton on MPG I barely notice an increase in fuel usage at 65mph. I get attention in campgrounds, people always love to come check it out. It was so much fun to build.

I am a huge fan of all of these outdoor types, especially in the state of Michigan! I am originally from Detroit. Then I moved to mount clemens for fifteen years and now I live in tennessee. Even though I am disabled, RU-vid is my go to for all entertainment! Now I learned one thing if you're in a small confined space or even a large living room of a home. The best way to circulate your cool air is to take your fan and put it on the opposite side of the space and blow it directly at the vent that releases the cool air into the space. What it will do is it will divert the cool air from the air conditioning to spread out. Even greater and cool down and circulate the air even better than placing it directly underneath the a c.

That is a great idea which I am going to try. I can mount a fan on the opposite wall as the AC blowing at it. I will give that a try this summer while I am camping. Thank you for the tip. Also Please Subscribe to follow my progress

Great video. The first thing you noticed besides the sheer nastiness inside was how incredibly good condition the outer shell was relatively. No rust, 1 hole and no major scratches. To a man with your skills (and patience) you saw the possibilities. After seeing those ants and animals, there is no way I could have kept those bug infested, urine drenched wood sub panels! I know you sealed them perfectly, but they are THERE…underneath everything…

So if you check out my episodic videos of this build which go into much more detail the floor was covered in carpet and linoleum, which I cleaned with an industrial cleaner/degreaser. I was worried about urine and feces smell too. Fortunately the water proof linoleum was easy to clean and remove all smells and got it very sanitary on the inside. Thanks for all the feedback. The Wabasto heater will run you out of a camper that size even on the coldest night, as long as you have some insulation. I've used them in my truck for the last 15 years, you wouldn't think something that small could put out that much heat. I set mine on 70 degrees and it does a good job keeping an even temp.
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
That is some great news to hear! I have only used mine while building my camper in the winter. I am planning on doing some cold weather camping trips. The only thing I need to do is find a way to quiet down the fuel pump. I haven't made a video yet on my attempts as I have not successfully found a solution. I so far put it in a 6x6 electrical watertight box, and filled it with expanding foam and then mounted it to the underside of my camper. I had no idea that it would actually I think make it louder like a drum. So I am probably going to relocate it to the front of the trailer tongue. I know some people use Rock Wool to deaden the noise, but that stuff is super expensive and only comes in large quantities. I have searched on FB Marketplace with no luck so far. I am guessing on a low setting the ticking will slow down but its still loud, more so with the fan low. Have you addressed the sound? If so what worked for you? Anyways stay subscribed if you haven't already subbed... Thank you Happy Holidays!

I think a woman and man are at the same level on something like this. Don’t doubt your ability or ability to learn as you go. I can instruct you a long the way. It didn’t take much physical strength to do this. Putting on the roof by myself was the hardest part. It’s super easy to do if you have 2 adults though and probably not doing it in the middle of a frozen snow system. I hope you take on this challenge and not let gender, age, knowledge level, experience, or physical ability stop you. Really what it takes is just time and effort, well and a little money and a few tools. I think this is a good project for anyone and I can guide you along the way. I am currently coaching 2 others doing this now. I hope to inspire and support more individuals. Too many of these campers are going to landfills or torn down to a utility trailer when there is plenty of meat on the bones to work with for something better. You certainly had fun with this reuse project. Suggest that you verify those tires are good. I had those type of wheels and new tires bead did not seal. So i had the wheels sand blasted and powder coated. That thing is aerodynamic as a brick! Have you thought about some type of big V on the nose? Light aluminum frame, skin with that FRP. Remove with pins. The point of the V hinge joined, aluminum legs folded inside. Remove becomes big camp table.
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
I haven't had an issue so far with these wheels. I have actually on cars had much better luck with steel wheels vs aluminum ones. I have actually considered it. It would be nice to have more space as well. I might add one yet. The aerodynamics is bad for sure, but luckily my tow vehicle is large, I am using a Tahoe so I think it helps with drag. All great ideas! If you haven't already please subscribe. Thank you

Honestly anyone can learn this. The one thing to keep in mind is, can't get much worse. I took my time and slowly worked on this for about a year, I used it too before finalizing it to see what I think camping comforts I might need... It's hard to plan for everything, so I left it customizable to my needs as I went. I am helping a couple of my Subscribers as well do their campers. I can give you all the help you want. I can even draw plans in 3d CAD to help visualize your goal. Maybe one day you will get another one for free.... We had a STARCRAFT pop up camper it had two queen sized pull out beds on each end and a full size fold down bed (the table) and a stove it was huge , when my father left to move back to florida he hauled it with him because he just had to have it he proceeded to park it in an empty field and there it sat for years and rotted what a waste he never once used it !!
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, lots of campers wind up in this very similar situation. It's good to let things go if you are not going to use them. Sell them while they still have value. It's hard to let stuff go, I know I am one of them sometimes. Hopefully it's repairable, often these need more work than its worth to pay someone to fix it up, and people often give them away for next to nothing, or even free, like how I got mine. I hope you decide to fix it up, and if so keep me posted. I will be adding more updates to mine and I do camping videos too, so Please Subscribe and follow me on my adventures 😃

Really liked this build out. I'm surprised you didn't insulate before adding everything.
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
Insulation I think is a bit over rated and a big expense and takes up another 18" of width on both the length and width of the inside of the camper. So what I did, and its a great proof of concept, is just seal this up as air tight as possible. So it maintains a good interior pressure. The roof is insulated with foam and tar, sealed on the top with rubber coating. So the sun beating down on it does not heat the camper in the summer. As for cooling I only needed my A/C on one trip but the outside temps were in the high 90s with high humidity, no insulation is going to save you on that one. Normal summer days open the windows with a cross breeze stays cool. In the winter months, I have camped in 20f temps and I can use 3 heat sources that all keep it warm enough for me, around 68f. I have a little wall plug heater, (also keeps floor warm), I have an electric fireplace keeps it really toasty, like 70f... and then for off-grid or extreme cold like sub-zero temps the Chinese Diesel heater is super warm, it easily will cook me out even in sub-zero temps like talking 80f inside, too warm for me! So insulation is really overkill, even if I wasn't heating the camper at all, 4 sealed walls and a sleeping bag works even in sub-zero temps. If I were to build something that I stay in for weeks at a time I would insulate better to slightly cut down heating energy usage. The Chinese Diesel heater uses next to no electricity and a full tank of fuel I think lasts jeez maybe 4-5 days depending on usage. Also the wood is 3/4" thick, thats pretty good on its own. A larger cabin would be something to consider to insulate, but if you are wood heating, again, it gets too hot usually. Please Subscribe if you haven't already. Thank you!

That’s a pretty good idea! Maybe keep it a bit warmer. Yeah I did have one broken light and still have the wiring. I will probably run a LED light strip which will also aid in backing up at night. If you haven’t already Please Subscribe

Well done. Thanks. You might want to fill in the gap at the top of the board on the end of your sink counter (left side). Dirt and gunk could get caught in there. 😊

Great Eye! Yeah its gappy more than it should be. I am either going to use a Saw Dust / Wood Glue mix I will make, or buy some Wood Putty. Sand. Then I need to put something on the counter top I think. Probably going to avoid Poly Urethan (Chips and is flammable).... I might use a Mineral Spirit Oil or Lin Seed Oil and oil my wooden sections. What do you think? If you haven't Please Subscribe and follow my updates 😃

Hey just my 2 cents. With your ac cover. Maybe cut a piece of laminate and put inside bottom of cover. When mounted it will take the pebble beatings and maybe not allow stones to ping in the back of ac. Nice job.

I will always take some spare change. That’s great advice! I have some left over fiberglass reenforced vinyl I can use. Probably glue it in place in the inside of the bag.

Excellent craftsmanship. I would have painted the door that wonderful green color to tie it all together and maybe a green stripe around the underside of the canopy too. Or even alternate black and green decals around it so there isn't such a contrast between the gray and green. Other than that, you did a great job !!
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
I love your ideas! I have been looking at the door and not liking the bottom color for sure. I was going to paint it with the Gelcoat in that light brown color no matter what bc it is so durable of a paint. I was thinking if I hated it I would just paint over it. I am glad I got someone saying I should bc now I will. So you are thinking also a stripe under the canopy that is green? I am liking that idea as well. I am not sure about what you mean by multiple stripes between the gray and green. Do you mean just stripes between the top and light brown, and light brown and green section? That sounds like an idea as well... The brown stripe I think is very cool. I love the fire engine red coleman decal on the back, I was thinking maybe a red stripe, or even a white stripe? What do you think?
@Tammi333
@Tammi333 6 месяцев назад
@@Jeep-Creep Yes a green stripe (not multiple) under the canopy. I was also thinking, because you have that awesome bear decal on the back that maybe you could find small animal decals in two different colors (or just one) and alternate them, meaning place one decal in one color and then the next decal next to it in another color, spacing them apart and do this around the underside of the canopy. Simple but yet a stand out for sure. if you decide on doing just a simple stripe, paint a stripe on a piece of paper and hold it up under the canopy before you commit to any color. Better yet have someone else hold it up so you can stand back and look at it. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will look great !!

You may want to spray the under side and frame of that camper with some rust converting spray and then some undercoating. !!!! Big time

I remember these. The only thing I wonder if you could have used cabinets that were not as deep to give you more floor space. Yeah they look like regular size for such a small space. Love the sink and stove top...
@Jeep-Creep
@Jeep-Creep 6 месяцев назад
Probably could. My floor space is only 6x6 and I think the sink stove area is 24” deep. Space goes fast in a tight area. I used the area to fit a slide out fridge/freezer. Thank you! Yeah most people doubted me when I took on this project. I had my own doubts too but I worked at it little by little. One of the issues I had was space constraints so I added things as they felt right and made it customized to my needs along the way. Slow and steady won the race. Merry Christmas to you and yours. I am glad you enjoyed the video please subscribe to see me updates
