Just a video of my camping setup in my Leer 100XR, this is on a 2016 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. Let me know what you thing and don’t forget to like, comment and subscribe! See my one year follow video here: • Leer 100XR camper shel...
I love the simplicity and practicality of your setup. I too agree that it’s better than the decked system. It would definitely work in my case. Of course, I subscribed. Thank you for sharing!
Great video. This looks like a great idea. Unfortunately, it's 2021 now, and with lumber prices being what they are, it is cheaper for me to buy a 5th wheel trailer than to build that wooden frame.
Hello, Great Video, Colorado Guy here. I’m building a camper on my tundra right now. I enjoy watching all of these videos and gives me all sorts of ideas. I’ll be posting pictures and videos soon. Stay safe and healthy. Again, thanks for the video.
Great video! Love the setup, refreshing to see a well put together "budget" build. I like this setup a lot more than the decked platform beds. Like you said, the decked systems are awesome but a bit too high to move around the bed comfortably.
Appreciate you sharing I am currently setting up my 2001 Silverado for camping. This is how I want to set mine up the bed on one side and walk away just something simple, I did just subscribe I’ll be watching more happy camping
Thanks for this video! I’m really considering a Wolf Pup “Black Label”, but I’m looking at the 16 FQ that has the bigger bath. When you were talking about the sway issue I was going to mention weight distribution! It can be dangerous if you have too much weight behind the single axle… Thanks again for a great and inform-able video!
You are the 1st person who has rec the little mats. I think they are gt. Have used them outside the tent, nxt to the camp fire for my dog to kay on n eat her bone. Gt set up
I have a Nissan Frontier and I'm shopping for a camper shell / topper. I really appreciate your suggestions. They'll help me set up my truck for some safe traveling.
Great video - I like the minimalist approach- How much do you really need for a weekend? Beats sleeping on the ground or in a tent. You keep all your stuff secure and you keep dry and out of the weather too.
Thanks! I don't personally lock it in myself, but I've seen guys use just a small pair of vice grips to clamp the opening mechanism in place. I figure nobody wants to mess with a fat hillbilly like me :)
I've been wanting to do this and I'm thankful I found your video! Quick question, what are the dimensions for the bed legs? and for the bed side closest to the wheelwell, did you rest the bed on top of the wheelwell or the bed legs prevent it from touching it?
Howdy CC. I’ll have to check and see, but I don’t think the bed is resting on the wheel well. As I recall, I used the blue storage containers as a height reference for my legs. Now I do have a leg in the center of the bed, up against the wheel well. With the legs in the four corners and the two center legs I’ve never had any tipping or rocking issues. The 3/4” plywood helps too, it’s solid and heavy.
Great Video- I have the Leer 100XR for my Ram. The shell does have the Roof tracks installed. Can you please let me know what Cross Bars and mounts you used?
Hi Tom, I'm not sure on the mounts as it was ordered with the mounts and cross bars from Leer. I just checked the mounts and I can't find any model or part number on them. You may be able to call Leer or a local Leer dealer and ask the question. The bars that I requested were the simple square bars, they did have an option for the aerodynamic shaped bars but as I recall they were about $150 fort the pair.
Great video sir! Do you have more detail on the platform bed? I'm interested in how it is supported on the side next to the truck bed wall -- is it somehow fastened to the truck bed wall?
I'm working on making an update video showing the construction, but a broken wrist is slowing me down :( it's not anchored to the wall, there is a support leg in center that rest against the wheel well. stays in place good. I'll link the update video when I get it done.
Thank you for a great video I had a solar panel installed on my Leer camper shell and the wires are coming into the bed I’m worried there’s going to be a leak where do I purchase this extra rubber products to keep water from coming in. Thank you.
As I recall I got them all from Amazon... one is the tailgate seal and the other is a generic adhesive seal. I think they may call it a bulb type seal? Thanks for watching!!
hi Donald, I'm sorry I don't but there is one in the works. The bed isn't actually anchored in, but the front leg on the drivers side is wedged up behind the tie down anchor on the bed wall. It's stayed in place fine for me for over a year now. I'll try to get a video done soon showing more details on it. thanks!
Yes sir , I enjoyed watching what you did to create your camping setup. I have a question regarding a comment you made in another video. You said you made an adjustment on the U bar that the door latch engages. I think you said you moved the fitting in so that when the latch engaged it created a tighter fit for the door. MY question is what tool did you use to loosen those two bolts? They appear to be phillip head bolts. I have tried every large size phillips head driver that I have with zero success. Got any ideas? Thank you.
Sorry for the delay in my response. I don't recall what tool I used, but I'm thinking it was a phillips? unfortunately I traded off the Tundra a couple of years ago so I can't verify to be sure. But yes, I do recall sliding the U-bolt that functions as a latch further in to tighten the seal of the door on one side. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!!
Well thanks anyway. I tried a new tool that I tend to use with less frequency, my brain. Turns out I have the correct driver and I fixed the problem. I think the transmission is garbled I thought I read you traded off your Tundra, that can't be possible. @@HillbillyMusings
I notice this with a lot of builds( my first build in my Jeep had it) Lack of head room in bed. Being able to sit up in bed is big if you have any sort of bad back at all. You look like a tall guy, do you have any problems while you’re inside being comfortable?
I fully admit I wish I had got the taller Leer camper shell vs the truck height version. It's definitely cramped in the bed, but doable. Just makes me wish I was 20 years younger!
I'm not sure on the leg length, but I plan on shooting a video showing the full construction of the platform when the weather warms up. The bed is not anchored but it is 'wedged' in so to speak, it have never shifted when driving.
Your setup is so simple and nice. I’ve seen others and they are saying “my setup is super cheap! It’s probably around 4000 dollars” it’s just really nice! How much do you think you spent total?
Not counting the shell itself, I have probably $300 total ....$200 of which is the carpeted bed liner and the rest in wood for the sleeping platform, storage bins and the foam mattress piece.
Hey man, I really like your set up. I'm thinking about doing something similar with my Tundra. Is it possible to remove and put back the camper shell somewhat easily? I really would like to purchase a shell but don't want to never be able to take it off if I'm moving something tall.
lsutigersfootball1 howdy. It’s possible to remove and reinstall it, but I won’t say it’s easy. There are videos on how to do it, but my thought is if I ever need to haul something that big I’ll just rent a I haul trailer for a couple hours.
The fiberglass shell is at least 250 to 300 lbs and takes two people to remove it. Most installers have a hydraulic jack that lifts it into place. There are home made ropes lifts and wooden stands that you can make but you'll need a lot of space in the backyard or garage to store it. It a major decision to have a shell as most of us do not remove them which limits what you can haul on your truck.
Howdy, they are approximately 18" long, 15" wide and 10" tall. I got these when the hospital where my wife works was throwing them away. But I'm sure you can find something similar that would work just the same. Good luck!
No sir I can't, I do have to stoop a little and can't set fully upright. I have wished many times now that I had gotten the high rise camper shell, another 6" would be perfect. Thanks for watching!
Howdy Greg. The net is hooked over the factory tie down system. Leer has an option that will let you add 8 internal tie down hooks in the underside of the camper shell. Then I used just a regular bungee type cargo net and stretched it over them.
@@HillbillyMusings I bought mine used so I have no idea how I can mount it. Do you know what the top is made of? I don’t know if I have to drill all the way through or what to do. Thanks
Hey Siri out of all the videos I watch about these nobody explains how they strap down the actual frame of the bed... did you just bolted to the bed of the truck? hope you can answer it sir nobody else seems to have touched on that part
Good morning. The bed frame is actually not attached to the bed in any way. It's simply just sitting on top of the bed rug liner with its six legs. As heavy as it is with the 3/4" plywood, I've never had any issues with it moving or sliding around. I was originally going to zip tie it to the tie downs in the corner of the bed if it did move, but haven't seen any need to. Hope this helps!
Hillbilly Musings oh wow, I totally assumed that it was tied down but it makes sense if it isn’t. hey sir thank you so much for replying I can honestly tell you I research it on Google for over an hour and nobody talked about it and now I know why. keep up the great videos sir, we appreciate it
HM, did you just nail the six legs perpendicular into the plywood? No other wood? I wish we could see how you built the platform. If you could post a blueprint that would sure help.
I carry mostly camping stuff, outdoor cooking gear, sleeping bag, water, dehydrated food, extraction gear, axe, saw, etc. I'll do a video this spring when the weather warms up. Thanks for watching!
Howdy AJ. I've owned this for a year now, the only leaks I've seen are after a very heavy rain or washing my truck, sometimes (not every time) I'll have some very slight leaks at the back of the shell near the top of the tailgate area on drivers side or passengers side. Nothing extreme, just some slight dampness in the carpet in those areas.
Hi Jay, the bed is simply sitting on the bedrug. I don't have it anchored or anything, although it is wedged in so to speak. I've never had any issues with it moving or shifting.
@@HillbillyMusings You mention the 'wedging' of the bed in the video but don't show it. I (and likely others) would love to see a video of the bed platform stripped down and without the storage underneath so we can better understand where it sits against the wall of the truck and wheel well, and how it's wedged so that it doesn't move.
I'm 5'8" myself, but my truck bed is only 5'5". When I'm sleeping I can pretty much fit like normal because my feet will go over the top of tailgate some, even when the back is shut so that gains me a few extra inches. I can't really stretch out or any thing though unless I lie down at an angle. Which I have angled myself before and just used one of my coolers for additional support down near the tailgate. If your bed is in the 5.5 foot range or so, at 6'1" in height it's going to be a challenge, you're probably most definitely going to have to sleep at an angle which means a full width bed of some sort.
@@ArgueWithATree18 I'm over in Katy area myself and I feel the pain on the heat. We just got back from camping up in Arkansas week before last, I hauled our generators up there to run fans at night. If you haven't made the trip yet, go check out Big Bend. About 9 hours from us, but well worth the drive!!
@@doingitwithnothing Honestly, yeah its a little tight... I'm 5'8" and i would put my feet up on top of the tailgate but was still scrunched a little. Luckily I tend to curl up a bit a night anyway but it's not too bad. If i were any taller though it wouldn't work.
@@doingitwithnothing it'll be tight but you can fit! if you look how the Leer installs, the back window on the Leer comes down to the front of the tailgate, so that gives you almost the width of the tailgate in addition to the bed length.
@@HillbillyMusings yes I was trying to find that tailgate gasket like you had I couldn't find it exact one but I see others that are like that. And then if you post it you can be like an Amazon affiliate and make a little bit of side money if people order the items from your links. I'm getting ready to do my little truck camper myself and watching videos as you probably did before you set up yours
