Are Camper Vans better than tents? Will they be better for our tribe of 4 and a dog?
Fortunately, we have a friend (Kirsty) who manages Custom Haus, Camper Van Conversion and customization business based in our local town of Swindon, Wiltshire. The beauty of speaking to them is they did not try and sell us anything just gave us honest advice.
In this video, we ask all the questions you probably have before taking the plunge and buying one.
We went to their workshop and were shown around different types of vans, most in different stages of customization. We have to say we were very surprised by what we saw.
From Hightop vans with a showers being fitted! That is something we did not expect. Through to transits in various stage of build.
We came across a stunning Custom Transit Van that we informed has been at lots of shows. And as soon as you looked inside you could see why.
Designed and built by the Custom Haus team, it was amazing. This is the first camper van Scott had ever set foot in and he was immediately swayed to thinking this could be the way forward.
From LED lights, pull out Gazebo, great interior and a extremely useful Pop Top Roof.
Pop Top Roofs are completely hidden, but when activated (literally popped up) they give so much extra room. They allow you to fully stand up in the van and give you space for 2 people to sleep. This is ideal for families with young children. Actually, converting what looks like a standard van into well, a house on wheels.
The question as to whether a camper van is big enough for a family of 4 was answered with a tick.
Then to comfort - The seats were really comfortable, both front and rear. And the bed that is displayed by folding down the rear seat was ample.
It had single gas hob and sink, so cooking and cleaning could all be catered for inside the van when it is raining. The font seats swiveled around, and you had a clip-on table that could be placed onto the drawers. Giving you and instant dining area. So, family space for those rainy days, and of course you could also fit a TV. The Pull-out awning gave it at least an extra 12 ft of outside space that would also be kept dry.
There are probably lots of people like us trying to decide if a camper van is the way to go. So, what did we get out of our visit.
Tent Vs A Camper van
Actual Space - A family tent gives you the space you need, but a camper van with pull-out awning matches this.
Comfort - A tent can be as comfortable as you make it, but this may involve you purchasing airbeds and sofas. With a camper van, when customized, it will have this, and the beds and chairs are far more comfortable.
Uniqueness - A tent is standard; you can buy the model you like and go with that. With the camper van, it can be converted to how ever you want. Custom Haus, showed us the different things you can get, from flooring to upholstery, blinds and even different styles and colours of pop-top roofs. Basically, a camper van is yours and bespoke to how you want, having it’s very own identity.
Set up - A tent, whether it air of poled, with take some time to pitch and then you have the extra time of setting up the airbeds, kitchen etc etc. With a camper van, you park up and if you fancy pull out the awning (total time =2 minutes!) Basically, ad hoc trips are far easier with a camper van, no packing, just off you go.
Longevity - A good tent will probably cost in the region of £1k and may need to be replaced every 3-4 years. A camper van will cost a bit more, but with care and servicing can last 20+ years
As you see, the camper van option is a winner when it comes to most things. The only blocker can be the price. Which most people will be looking at. Kirsty and the team explained that any van can be converted. You do not have to spend £20k on a van and then pay another £15k customising it. You could if you are lucky pick up a nice older transit and then start doing things as you go. It was as they explained a project that grows. You may start with chairs being converted to a bed and then go on to get a Pop-top, followed by the awning?
For this video we want to thank the Custom Hause team for showing us an unbiased view of the camper van. Whether we buy one is still yet to be decided. Maybe we check out caravans next?
Big shout out to Custom Haus and the team who showed us around their great workshop and gave us food for thought and if you are looking to get a camper van converted, we would recommend -
