Join me as take a boat trip into the amazing Niagara Falls. What has to be on everyone's bucket list if they ever visit Canda.
What can you say about Niagara Falls apart from it has to be seen to be believed.
You cannot expect a quiet trip to the city of Niagara Falls. It is swarming with Tourists, and when you get your fist glimpse of the falls you will see why.
This amazing spectacle pulls in over 20 million tourists each year, and I have to say that it did feel that they had all gone the same day as me! So be prepared to be surrounded by camera clicking, blogging video makers at every corner.
Myself and couple of work colleagues were staying in Canada for a couple of weeks and decided to make the trip and we are so glad a I did as this was one experience that will stay with us forever.
Niagara Falls is not the tallest waterfall in the world, only in the region of 21 to 34 metres. But it is impressive due to the actual quantity of water that goes over - said to be more than 168,000 cubic metres (6 million cubic ft.) of water going over the crestline of the falls every minute!! Even the roar of the water is intimidating.
Due to teh amazing road infrastructure in Canada, Niagara Falls is actually quite easy to find, and when you enter the town itself, it is an easy drive through to the end of the street where you will find parking, but be conscious that it is $35, which when you add to teh rest of teh money you can end up spending, can result in it being quite an expensive day.
There are plenty of ways to see the falls:
By helicopter for $120
Down a zipline for $70
By boat for $32
You can go for the journey behind the falls for $24
Or you can go on wheel in the town $15 + there are also various high-rise towers etc spread around that would give you great views.
For us though, it had to be the boat, we had travelled 2 hours to get there so we wanted to see it up close. The great thing about the boat trip which did surprise us that no pre booking was required! Simply rock up and book tickets on one of the automated ticket machines for the time you want.
$32 got us a 20-minute trip into the falls and as it turned out it was probably the best $32 I have ever spent. You get provided with a red rain cover, which in all honesty did nothing to really protect us from what we were about to face. As soon as you are on the boat, you can hear the roar of the water pouring over the falls. You can hear it on the video as a constant hum, we actually thought it was the boat engine, but we were wrong.
As you travel into the falls, just be prepared to have your breath taken away, your eyes closed, your ears bashed, your senses explode and to be completely drenched from spray. And no, that is not an exaggeration. The force is immense. The water is a mad churning torrent of power that I do not believe anything could survive - But people have actually gone over these falls in a barrel! But no words can describe, only watching the video it will give you a full appreciation of what to expect.
You spend approx. 5 minutes in the base of the falls and it feels like 5 hours - And yes you do get very wet. Screams could be heard throughout the 5 minutes, not just from amazement but from the fact that we were all getting soaked.
And then the subdued silence when we turned around and went back - All of us just looking at each other, thinking what the hell did we just see. It was like being thrown into a tornado, getting a glimpse of what the end of the World would look like if mother nature ever had its way.
Once over we decided to hit the main strip - what a difference. The place is a vast tourist trap, with every type of souvenir and every deign of T shirt you could think of. Rides, shows, museums, bars restaurants adorn the sides. Oh yes, if you have kids, this would cost you a bomb. For ourselves, though, it was a time to eat, and the other bucket list item we had to complete was finding and eating some Canadian Poutine. A dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. No, it does not sound that appetizing, but surprisingly, it is - if you like about 2lbs of potatoes and cheese that has the consistency of plastic?
Overall, I have to rate the falls boat trip experience as an 11/10. There is not a lot that would ever beat this. Value for money was incredible, and ease of buying the ticket was also. Where else can you experience the force of Armageddon for $32.
As for the rest of the town, it is worth seeing, but be prepared for bottomless pockets of you have youngsters with you!
