In this episode of Wandering Wagners we were on our way on a trip when a diesel motorhome issue caught us and we had a Camping trip FAIL!
We were almost to our destination when our 2020 ‪@NeXusRV‬ Wraith 34W with the ‪@cummins‬ 6.7l engine threw a code stating that the "DEF is Low, Refill Soon" which is a telltale sign of the QLS sensor going bad which can cause your vehicle to de-rate and require a tow if you don't get to the dealership as soon as possible. We wanted to avoid a tow at all costs, so we stopped at a gas station, and called our local and trusted ‪@Internationaltruck‬ Selking International ‪@selkinginternational6454‬ and we were able to get some information but since they don't take appointments, we wanted to get the RV there as soon as we could so it would be "in line" to get looked at sooner rather than later. With that information, we decided to abort the camping plans and head back towards the home base and get the Super C RV to the dealership.
It was there for a week and it was the QLS sensor but it was able to get replaced and hopefully it will be the fix. So far, this is the 5th generation of this sensor and they keep failing over and over but this was the first time it failed for us. Time will tell!
While the RV was at the dealer, we kept the ‪@DometicOfficial‬ 12V fridge stocked up and we hoped that the ‪@RichSolarTalk‬ panels and ‪@VictronEnergyBV‬ controller and ‪@Redodopower‬ Lithium battery would keep it in check and luckily it did and everything in the fridge and freezer were perfectly cold!! At least that was a great test for the solar.
With the engine code cleared up, we are able to get back on the road for another (hopefully uneventful) trip!

I can feel your pain! We just got back from a 5500 plus mile trip, Colorado to Florida and back. 2005 Dodge cummins towing a 31 ft 5th wheel. Water pump blew on exit 70 on I-10! So, two tow truck later and three days later we got our truck back and was able to go home without any further problems. We were fortunate that there was a camp ground near by (8 miles), and the repair shop about 20 miles away. Oh, and we had two dogs (labs) and a cat. We were blessed that we had just turn off the interstate and were able to get the rig off the road as best we could. Had to shut the engine off immediately or the the engine would have seized.

We have a 2018 jayco Seneca and are on our 4th DEF header. This last time in a freightliner service center told us they found the factory had reversed the cooling lines to the DEF tank and we were cooking the headers. We have not had a problem since the last change.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
Interesting. We heard it was the valve, that when it fails it would fail open, which would cook the sensor. We changed out the valve to the upgraded style probably more than a year ago hoping that would be a fix but then this happened and we had the upgraded valve already. Flip a coin. Either way let's hope both of us are fixed and don't need another one haha

My RV is always about 7 miles away, that and I can not get inside at all while parked because the step above steps do not remove and there is not enough room to swing them down. But now you have reminded me I hooked up a portable solar panel to the trailer so I did not need to physically disconnect the battery as even the disconnect leaves some parasitic draw and keep the battery topped off. I forgot to go and check on it so I had better head that way soon.
@WanderingWagners

For us it's difficult to get used to since we are used to it being inside the garage haha but a week wasn't too bad, but weird. Better go check on yours to make sure that solar is keeping things in check😁👍🏻

Glad it was resolved. I had a 2500 HD Chevy. I know its a Duramax and not a Cummins, had over 115k miles and it never regenerated. Not one time. Never had any issues of any kind with DEF or anything really. That being said, I spoke with Gale Banks and explained I never drove it light. "drove it like I stole it" and it kept the DEF system and filters extremely clean. Even had it checked by chevy due to no regen. All components were clean. Said I may have kept it burnt out. Who knows. However I did have another 2500 earlier year model that had multiple issues with DEF system. Actually everything on it again and again with the DEF. Guess 2nd time lucky...glad your issues were taken care ot.

My daughter had a Jeep Grand Cherokee towed off the Ohio interstate to a town 5 miles away. I paid extra on her vehicle insurance for towing when she was in college so I turned it in to insurance. Towing company charged me over $1,000, Insurance got them to send me back almost $600 and insurance paid the rest back. My insurance agent said they violated a state law on towing with what they charged me and the company was fined for it. The tow driver was nice and dropped my daughter at a hotel close to the Jeep dealership. Glad you didn't derate or have more problems. Be safe.

If you need to leave things in your fridge or freezer for an extended time that you are not around to monitor it, place a coin on one of the ice cubes in the tray. When you check your freezer in a few days or weeks if the coin is still on top it didn't defrost or get hot & melt. If the coin is on the bottom of the ice cube tray and the ice is frozen then your food defrosted and froze again.

Well, it worked out better for you than for us. We were headed on vacation in our 2012 GMC Sierra 3500HD (74k miles) towing our 5th wheel when we got a notification on our dash while traveling down the highway (in the left lane) that we had 165 miles until reduced speed. 10 seconds later it through us in to limp mode. It took us 21 miles to get to an exit. We disconnected and paid someone to tow our camper to the campground and we dropped our truck at a dealership. That was on Friday, July 29, 2022. We were called on Monday and told it was a sensor. The sensor arrived the next day, but the dealership chose to not try to put it on until Thursday evening. They broke the bolt holding the sensor on and turned a $400 repair into a $5,000 repair (estimate). Also, the part we were now forced to replace was backordered. Today is April 25, 2023 and our truck is still sitting at that dealership waiting on parts. When the dealer wasn't keeping us informed (as promised) we got GM involved. They have been absolutely ZERO help. We had to store our camper at the campground until the end of the season and then pay to have it towed home. I requested the dealer let me know how they were protecting our investment over the winter (new brakes, new batteries, summer blend diesel) and received no response. I can't drive it, can't fix it, can't sell it (GM won't pay us for it) and yet we still made payments on it, kept insurance on it. Businesses made money hand over fist for years by not maintaining inventories, but now with global supply chain issues they don't accept any responsibility for manufacturing and selling vehicles that they can't keep on the road! To add insult to injury, last week they sent me a congratulatory anniversary email with their company. Too bad they can't update their computers to NOT send that crap when their dealers break our vehicles and they can't help fix them!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
Wow!😩 That's terrible! I wonder if you could sue since it was them who broke the bolt. You shouldn't have to cover what they break trying to fix a sensor. We've never really had good luck with dealerships unless they were semi shops. Seems the workers there are usually much more knowledgeable and faster. Mike had a 16 ram and the dealership jerked him around time and time again so he traded it in and bought a gas truck and then it was really the dealers issue😂 I'm surprised GM isn't helping like they should! Totally understand your frustration!!
@timwaddell9450
@timwaddell9450 11 месяцев назад
The one thing that i find is an issue with cummins, is the the emission sensors by bosch are one model number off of the fords. Yet cummins charges 10x for the same sensors. Also place are now stocking them. The other issue i have found is what i know is price fixing for cummins parts. When looking at cummins sensors, majority are the same. The entire def/scr/dpf is a joke in cost to repair. Also soon as you say diesel, everything is 2x plus on cost.

I'm a long distance truck driver. January of last year, I took my 2020 Kenworth with a Cummins X15 engine into a dealership in Washington state with the same fault. After waiting a few days for the sensor, they put it in & sent me on my way. I attempted to deliver a local load, but got the fault message again. It derated before I could get back to the dealer. They then realized the DEF pump was only working intermittently. Waited for several more days. All told, I was in a hotel room down the street for 1 1/2 weeks. I've had trouble with every single Cummins engine I ever run.

That sounds"familiar" with some of the issues we've had with our semis but most of the time it was emissions related. The worst engine we ever had was A CAT. Never again there!😩 Detroit was always good to us though, Cummins wasn't bad either besides emissions

Look up a soot sensor for any isx engine then look at one for a ford or duramax. All ford and duramax are under 200 and readily available at any parts stores. That same sensor for a cummins is not available anywhere and will cost at least 900. Unless you spend days scouring the internet like i did and found one for just under 400. When cummins engines and those sensors are in evry ram, kenworth, paccar, volve, imternational ect. You know it is price fixing. In my research i am willing to bet the ford sensor will work, but i am too chicken to try it 😂

@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
Because we weren't sure that was the issue. We had a feeling it was however almost everyone says when it's the QLS sensor fails, your def gauge will read 0 and ours was still functioning. Once the shop ran diagnostics later that week and the newest sensor was under warranty and only a few days away we went that route and kept our spare as a spare. They aren't allowing dealerships/shops to stock the sensors because they were unavailable for over a year to anyone. Long ago when this was starting to become a big problem, we bought an entire def tank with the sensor to travel with. I doubt the sensors are available to purchase (still short supply issues) unless your rig is down.

This was a known issue from the emissions so no dealer had this part for years (we were lucky and never needed it when they didn't have any) they gave others a bypass code to the ECM in the meantime. When ours went out they had parts readily available at least and it was only at the shop for a few days. This international dealer is great about getting things fixed in a timely manner so we are lucky!

Welcome to the substandard emissions systems mandated by the EPA. Only we would put up with the systems that are poorly designed, poorly engineered. A fluid that freezes at -12C in a country where winter brings that temp and lower. They didn’t bother to design it to be heated when you plug it in. My truck has been down for over 9 weeks during the last year, all related to the emissions systems. The EPA and the manufacturers should bear the responsibility for these systems. Warranty isn’t the answer as the warranties don’t pay for a weeks worth of hotels and meals while the vehicle is out of commission.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
It's all very frustrating! I'd say 98% of the issues we've had with our semis, pickups, and RV have all been emissions related🙄

@@WanderingWagners I’ve heard that from many truckers. Law makers walk away from these brain fart laws wiping their hands and saying what a great job we’ve done. The manufacturers are stuck with compliance and it appears from these emissions systems. It appears they produce the bare minimum to get them out the door and then it’s the consumers problem. I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a class action lawsuit against the EPA and the manufacturers. I feel sorry for the dealers because they are only as good as the parts provided and the parts supply and those have been underwhelming.
