Good review. Check out the "quick RAW" option, I believe it's even faster than the jpg transfer you were using in the video. So, with the old CamRanger, the fastest transfer method was to set your camera to record RAW files to one card, and record the smallest possible JPG file to the second card - then CR would send that small jpg to the iPad pretty quickly. The downside there was you did not get a backup of your RAW files in case your card failed. With CamRanger2 you can use the Quick RAW option, so you can go back to recording RAW to both of your cards while still getting a very fast transfer to iPad review.
Also worth noting is the battery usage. You definitely need a spare battery for the CamRanger2 if you are going to shoot for a full day. We also required 3 batteries in our D850 camera to shoot a full day while connected to the CamRanger2. Meaning, the CamRanger 2 really eats up battery from your camera so you may need to buy another battery for your camera as well. That said, the app is definitely more stable and just a huge improvement in every way over the original CR. Pinch zoom was desperately needed, but it also reconnects smoothly now, and has many more features. If you're shooting handheld, you are immediately challenged with where to put the unit. This is the only real issue with the CR2. Can't mount it to hotshoe because remote triggers go there. With original CR, I'd put it in the pouch it came with and zip it semi-closed, allowing the usb to exit the pouch, then clip the pouch to the camera or to my belt loop (neither of these were ideal, but it worked). The new CR comes with a case that doesn't really work so well like that. The magic arm solution would not really be comfortable for us so I'm looking for other pouches to buy that will hold the CR2 and let the USB out.
With the original cam ranger and 5d3 I had large Raw and small Jpeg recorded to both sd and CD cards simultaneously. Always backed up regardless of whether in was using cam ranger or
The White Camranger is a TP-Link TL-MR3040 pocket wifi. I know coz I have one. I flashed a custom firmware on it and use an app called Qdslrdashboard and offers more feature than the Camranger App.
Hi Ferhan, great review! I have been using the CamRanger 1 for the last 10 years, was always on the sideline with the new one w regard to its size etc but I think I am convinced based on the some of the client functionality you demonstrated. Can you tell me what the angled USB cable you are using in the demo? Thank you!!
Hi Ferhan. Excellent introduction to the CamRanger 2. Like Justin Limoges I'm interested in acquiring a coiled cable to connect the CamRanger 2 to the digital terminal on a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. I saw your reply to Justin Limoges below and I emailed CamRanger support. They stated that they don't have such a cable. Did you per chance get your CamRanger 2 from a third party? I'm looking for someone to contact about the coiled cord. I've run out of ideas trying to hunt the cable down via Google. Thanks Jess
Hi. I actually bought the cam ranger 2 before I find your helpfull video there are a few things I'm trying to figure out maybe you can help me? (1 how does the focus stacking work? (2 is there an option to have an overlay picture? (to follow) (3 zoom on live view is it only possible to get it with a double-tap? (not always I want it to become that large as when the double-taped zoom gives me) Thanks for your help it's really appreciated❤
Hello, I’ve searched online for the magic arm you are using but have yet to find it. Could you please add a link to it? Thank you! Also, thank you for the tutorial!
Great Demonstration Bro. Ferhan, but got a question it seems like the trigger for camRanger 2 goes into the camera flash shoes, what if I need to use the flash for fill in the light, then how can we deal with this. I am really interested in New camRanger 2 however I shoot mostly with fill flash for birds outdoor. Looks forward to hearing from you. Thanks
I had to upgrade as I switched from Nikon to the Fuji system and Camranger 1 did not support it. I don't know if you realise but you can Timelapse and focus stack with it. Nice review.
Have been trialling the air direct from tether tools but it's not been a good experience. Now looking at the cam ranger. My client wants to receive the photos in lightroom..can that be done..can't see a video on that. With the software can you rename the files and save into a folder on your desktop ? Great vid btw
As far as I'm aware it won't work wifh light room in that way. The images are transfered to the ipad through the camranger 2 app. Here the images can be viewed and rated. Why the client wants to view in light room during the shot? Better off just shooting tethered directly into light room.
Hello Ferhan Khan, you did a good review of the gadget indeed the Cam ranger 2. A question I have, is to know at what distance you can transmit the files to the tablet or computer and if it allows you to view what the camera sees in live view mode and how about raw files transmission? But so far it has more features than a lot of the other competitors. Cheers.
Thanks for the demo, what iPad ( generation "X" ), I imagine processors affect speed also of displaying images, do you use an additional battery for the iPad keep "it" running?
Thanks for the review, I am really interested in the SD card slot on the Camranger 2. I shoot with a Z6 (Yes only one card slot!) Can you use the CamRanger to just write to the SDCard slot without transmitting to anything? Is it fast enough to keep up with typical event shooting? Like to see you show how the SD Card slot works as a backup. Thanks!
I couldn't get an answer for the CamRanger. Maybe you can answer that: For the sake of speed, can we just transfer the JPG files via WIFI and keep the RAW files in the camera -as it is possible with XAquire of Fuji tethering software? (I shoot Fujifilm medium format, which makes the speed of transfer an important concern). And, how long does the battery last in one charge (do you need practically a spare battery)?
Yes, you can do that, but even that isn't necessary with the new CamRanger 2. If you set it to "quick RAW" mode, it will just use the embedded jpg preview that your RAW files already have. That's what we've been using and it's very fast (just as fast or faster than the original CamRanger) and it's more convenient because you can now shoot RAW to primary card AND RAW to secondary card as backup.
@@jasonlangheine1295 Thank you, Jason. I already have the first version of Camranger I purchased 5-6 years ago. It was acceptable with my 16 MP Nikon D4. For two years I shoot with 50 MP Fuji GFX. Do you have a friend who has a high-MP camera to try out the performance? I wish we only had a comparison to the Tethertools Air direct, which is slightly more expensive. Is it worth the price difference?
opqrst7 we are shooting with Nikon D850 so the files are big. From what I understand though, there are issues using the CamRanger with Fuji and Sony cameras. But I haven’t paid attention to those problems since were shoot Nikon.
can you test the Bracketing funktion? Can you adjust the EV Steps individual below and over? Does camranger 2 in bracketing mode exposure longer then 30 seconds?
I haven't done it with a phone, but we've done live view to iPad while shooting. I'm sure it works with a phone, but it's a major battery killer though, you won't really want to leave that on. Kills camera battery, iPad battery...Live view in general is a killer.
Hiya. I’m using cam ranger 2 on a Mac book pro and viewing them in Bridge. Agreed, the transfer rate into the app is quick but the transfer rate from the app into Bridge is painfully slow. We need to transfer into Bridge to rename the files. Any tips on getting this speed increased. We’re only testing with medium jpegs (10mb). Cheers
