Love to watch the novice cyclists giving it a go and makes for interesting content as we have all been there , 30 miles is quite a long way as a first effort and was completed in style, well done you !!
I absolutely love Harriet's moxxy. She knows her limits, but is willing to take a challenge. She's girl next door cute as a button, and I would love to watch more videos of her progress if she chooses to push herself! You GO Harriet!!!! The hostess is also a delight. Her energy and encouragement is exemplary. These videos are really fun to watch!
Congratulations! Very well done. I'm sure her legs and probably her nether regions are a bit sore after her first longer ride. Now all she needs is several thousand pounds to buy her own bike and kit!
"I'm a warrior, b%tch!" Love Harriet's enthusiasm. And she's having fun. That's the most important thing. Hope to see more of her and Manon. Go, Girls!
It’s easy to forget that we were all Harriet when we started cycling. I remember feeling so proud of myself the first time I was able to drink from my bottle without having to stop 😀 #TeamHarriet
@@lvloneymaker24 More or less what I was about to write :D I can't remember learning to take my hands off the handlebar or standing up on the bike since I was probably 6-8 years old when I first did these things...
Harriet getting into cycling is the most exciting content GCN has produced in a while. THIS is what cycling should be. Sharing good time, with good friends, and getting more people on bikes. Harriet, coming from an experienced cyclist, you have been doing a phenomenal job. Not many people will ever do 30 miles in their lifetime. You should be proud of yourself, and I hope you continue riding. This is such a heartwarming experience. Manon is such a great riding partner too. Such a good advocate for new cyclists to have a riding partner like you.
Well done Harriet.. GCN should make a series of your progress, training etc clip less pedals make a great difference but their is a learning curve or maybe a series of you showing uk cycling routes or gravel routes 🤩👍🚴
Harriet, you are an international super star now! Greetings from Kentucky, we love watching your progress and improvements. Manon is a wonderful mentor.👏
Perfectly timed - watching this as I eat my breakfast before setting out on my longest ride yet as a total roadie noob, with my lovely partner (who is a road cyclist). Thank you Harriet, you've inspired me :) (I have yet to be able to take my hands off the bars 🤣)
Harriet you are great! 🤩 I went for my first road bike ride this morning. I definitely wasn’t as graceful as Harriet. I came off and broke my bike 😂🩹 love the content GCN, keep it coming! I could clearly use a tip or two 👍
@@Oddlysatisfyingandasmr I hope your bike is fixable and you are back cycling soon. Keep going, it get's better and better and the joy increases by a lot. The odd "not clipping out of the pedal in time" might occur a few times in the beginning but it happens to the best.
I'm glad gcn finally realized what a beginner cyclist is. I've always found 30 miles to be my no training needed distance. I can sit on the couch all winter and come out of the Gate with a 30 mile ride. It's hard but doable.
@@jbratt I do a lot of 30 and 45 mile organized rides each year. A staggering amount of people come out on rusted bikes not adjusted properly. Boy do they suffer
@@brianluck84 And because they came unprepared, they hate it and never come again: if they'd have rented a proper bike they'd have loved it and bought a real bike when they went to return their rental...
same, i'm a mountain biker but i also bike on roads with my road bike, i have no problems with long distances on flat surfaces but i've never managed to get used to hills even though i've been cycling for quite a long time
I am just coming back from 2 years pause. So I am a beginner again. Going up is easy and not scary at all, just drop in the easiest gear and don’t fall asleep. If the only goal is to go up and time is irrelevant, just enjoy. I am still terrified of descending.
Of all the amazing and informative videos on GCN, this has to be my favourite. So heartwarming and inspirational. Just goes to show how cycling reqlly is for everyone. Well done Harriet, and well done coach Manon! 👏🏼
Thank you so much for this Manon and Harriet. I'm a beginner cyclist too and can't yet take a drink whilst riding, can only do a couple of pedal strokes standing and I have my hands on my brakes too. I feel really self conscious riding here because I only see very serious cyclists. I appreciate that you allowed yourself to be vulnerable Harriet; to allow us beginners to feel encouraged ❤ I managed to ride 37km today and had to nap! I really hope that this introductory content continues and I'd love to see how Harriet progresses. Maybe some beginner skill content (riding without a hand/s, standing whilst riding, how to go about hills etc). Thanks again, happy cycling ladies 😊
hey sarah! that's so nice to read, i'm glad you enjoyed watching me out of my comfort zone hahaha! 🥰 it's easy to feel discouraged when everyone else seems very serious but us beginners have got to just keep going regardless! i wish us both luck in our cycling journeys hehehe 🚴♀️
I totally understand her excitement. Good for her! Keep it up! Two years ago I started cycling and went for a 15 mile ride. I bonked half of the way on a small climb. Now I'm doing 100 miles rides with no problems. It's amazing how the body adapts if you give it time and patience.
The bike frame looked lovely and small. I wish the more affordable bikes came that small. Perhaps she just needed a shorter bike stem so that she could relax her arms.
@@amandajane8227 I think her saddle might just be too low. She needs to lean forward more and maybe use a narrower handlebar. A bike fit would be a great idea
She definitely doesn't look comfortable on the bike, and it appears to be so twitchy which I guess is what you get from a 'money no object' race bike. GCN should source her something more relaxed, maybe one of the Ribble gravel bikes.
So today is Sunday... what's your excuse? If you need encouragement, I'm going out tomorrow on my usual 30km ride, takes just over an hour, so I fit it in twice a week. Get 'er done!
As somebody who hasn’t cycled in years (since having a significant ankle injury following an accident), I found this very humbling, wholesome and inspirational for those who are not physically able to push back to back KOMs or hit those century rides. Thank you for the content!! Looking forward to watching more :)
My fiancée got her first bike last month and joined me yesterday on a 50km loop. About 20kmh average speed, a reasonable coffee and cake stop half way through, and she returned feeling strong. I think it's worth planning and taking it easy, thinking about hydration and nutrition, and taking breaks - but it's definitely doable.
That was a big ask to complete a 30 mile ride as a beginner. Well done Harriet, I hope you enjoyed the whole experience including the aching muscles afterwards. It's all part of the process. Well done Manon for the gentle encouragement and hope you both can make more of such rides and friendship.
Great job Harriet I love those kinda rides myself. Manon is doing a great job of encouraging you to try new skills on a bicycle. This reminds me of something I did while in the U.S Navy. A friend wanted to get into cycling so I helped them start out. We started at 10 miles a day and proceeded to do longer distances when they where ready. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Absolutely heartwarming. ❤️ Manon, can you see the people at the custom paint company again? I guess Hariett deserves a proper „Pinarelli“ with exactly that written on the frame.
Two years ago I started my Cycling Journey. My first ride was 20 KM and I was so exhausted. This summer I rode at least one ride with 100 km+ every week. Three weeks ago I did my longest ride at 320 KM. Never thought this possible, when I started.
I think that a professional bike fit would be the kindest thing you could do for her, those arms must be a few inches longer by now, and she looks about ready to slide off the front of that saddle. I think the handling would be improved massively
It's about the posture. Manon and Harriet are more or less the same height, but Harriet isn't used to the race geometry, so she tries to have the body in the same posture having to reach for the handlebar instead of leaning into it. I think the body can get used to it pretty fast.
@@lmaoroflcopter can agree on that. I've been doing biketrips with kids and teenagers (300km stretched over 5 days) for quite some time now and although I of course know about the importance of the right saddlehight in terms of efficiency, i also noticed, that many, who are not that used to riding, find it way more comfortable and easier to control their bike with the saddle lowered just a bit.
Another great Harriet comment that made me laugh out loud: "oooh, this looks posh". As she progresses as a cyclist, I think Harriet's style and personality will continue to make her compelling GCN viewing. Got to commend her too, for wanting to try her long ride on a "regular bike". All I can say is, give us more!!!
Honestly 😂 Makes me remember my first ride, just about 10km. Legs were sore for about a week But now I can do a 120km ride and be ready to go again the next day.
Good effort & nice to see Harriet is confident enough to start getting used to letting the bars go & get out of the saddle. That's hopefully the start of a lot of lovely rides!
This is the first GCN video my partner has watched and enjoyed from start to finish. I think it's even made her think that she can actually cycle further than her brain tells her she can cycle. I can feel a 20 miler coming on 👍
❤❤ Has to be the most enjoyable video yet ! ! ! We've all been there....Please do more videos with Harriot to keep us updated on her progress. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Harriet is great! And loved seeing Manon be so supportive and encouraging without being condescending... really wonderful sense of mentorship + camaraderie. Just wonderful!
"When, you keep going, it's like you're just one with the bike eventually... it's just great." That line actually gave me chills. Also, Manon's finger nail game is always on point. Respect.
I know I might be a lottle late and I don't know if the series is still running, but you know what: Hit the 👍 below ↙️ and if this comment gets 100 likes, it is GCN sponsors her a fitting Brooks saddle! and after 1000 likes and above, a proper bike fitting!
Welcome back, Harriet. I watched the entire video with a smile until the end. Harriet is very funny and very natural. Especially on Pinarelli bike edition 😁
It takes guts to do all the “noob” things in front of a camera (like lifting one hand off), we have all been there but usually get to practice and make our mistakes in private first… respect ✊🏼
Great effort Harriet, and nice video CGN. I still remember the day I did my first 50km ride. An old & experienced folk cycled with me which was super helpful for building my confidence. When I got home that day, I was excited and very surprised by my body's capabilities.
Well done Harriet! The Cafe Ride are the bestest rides, a casual roll for 60-90mins to an eatery/cellar door/heck even take a small picnic somewhere scenic, and then return. No rush, no fuss, pay as much attention to the surrounds as to the bike. #NextChallenge Might I suggest the Parkland Basics to help build confidence with bike handling, operation plus the little tips and tricks for new cyclists to try to make habitual things? Slow speed balance and handling, hill starts (up and down), stopping to a halt (whether flats or clipless. #Routines), awareness and simple signalling, preparing to restart when stopping...
Wow, what a coincidence. I just finished this year's Bike The Drive in Chicago and they had a 30 miles challenge. And noticed a lot of people where quite proud of there medal. As for me well it was just a typical Sunday ride. Gave me fond memories of beginner me just 2 years ago almost passing out on a 16 miler.
Finally catching up on my gcn videos after intense fall gardening & cycling. OMG Harriet you are super at taking on challenges! I can't believe how you took on this challenge. I would never have been up to riding nearly 50 km when I was at your level of experience! Manon, I am a retired Elementary Teacher and you are a natural! Never condescending, always encouraging, setting realistic but definitely stretching goals. What a team you are! It is a joy to watch you grow into your cycling self Harriet! Such great attitudes both! More of this excellent content please and kudos to you both!
Cracking job by her! Awesome. And the ride looks really cool. Maybe one day I'll do it myself. My furthest so far ist 83km on my own which was hard but finishing the ride was a great feeling.. hope Harriet keeps rolling :)
putting a beginner through that is a big challenge. I can't remember my fist first 50km, but I can remember when I rode the fist 50 km with my girlfriend. And on her first 90 km ride the cursing increased in the end a bit, but she loved it. Harriet needs more screen time!
Nothing quite as joyful as watching somebody's excitement about learning something new or discovering they are more capable than they thought. Harriet and Manon are awesome, and this was just brilliant!
This was a wonderful video! By the end, I realized I had this huge smile on my face listening to Harriet. She is to be congratulated on being game to try the adventures you set before her. While I have no idea for the next challenge you set before her, I will undoubtedly be watching.
First 30miles in the bag good going I remember my first 40 miles I was nearly dead after it now I can do over 100 miles with no big issues at an easy 15 to 17 mph 😁
I love those types of paths for cycling away from cars.....but most friends with road bikes refuse to go on them but I'm fine with my gravel bike. I think Harriet would love a 1x11 speed gravel bike 👍👍👍
Every year we have a 60 + mile (100 km) ride for cancer and 100’s of people do it with no riding experience. If you are a healthy adult and cannot ride 30 miles you really should consider ADDING regular cardio to your routine and this should be something everyone can do. The equivalent of going for a 2 hour walk. NOT EASY TO DO BUT CERTAINLY SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMPLETE. Its not like running a marathon without not training.
Go girl. A great find GCN. Wonderful to see the confidence build. Hope we see more from Harriet and Manon over the next year. Need to get Jenny "say something grumpy" Graham to join in sometime. What a hoot that will be.
Great Job Harriet- I am returning to the bike after a short couple of years pause. On your next bike- try narrower handlebars - you will feel less wrist strain- and if I might make another suggestion, relax and have fun, things smooth out when you do, I promise. #TeamHarriet
I began mountain biking in 2013, age 63. At 64 i pedaled 28 miles from 2700ft for 5miles down to 1000ft in 5 miles up to 2400ft in 4 miles, up and down for 8 miles and at Prather Ca. Mostly down but a mile+ uphill for 6 miles and a few miles of flat....28 total. Did it a few times. So for 70 i feel ok
"One with the bike". She gets it already. Wonderful seeing new riders get the joy of cycling. Hope to see more. Perhaps her full progression to avid cyclist.
few days ago i bought a used random bike and rode 25km (15miles) back home. the roads here are tough. was watching a few bike videos and was recommended this. keep it up!
Hats off to Harriet! The first longer rides are the hardest. Also the reach on her bike seems a bit extensive for my taste doesn't it? Especially because she's a beginner...makes the bike a bit wobbly
HARRIET IS THE BEST DUDE BRO IN THE WORLD. SHE RIDE THAT BIKE LIKE IT'S HER OWN LEGS IN THE SHAPE OF WHEELS. TOUR DE FRANCE IS BASICALLY DONE. #TeamHarriet
Congratulations and well done. Now you know how I feel when I get to a place that seemed far yet doable on a bike. It's a great feeling of accomplishment.
Yes they can, I’m 18 only starting riding to exercise like a month ago and I rode 35 miles…it was slow but I did it.(on a mountain bike) think I rode it in like 2hrs 50mins.
How many views on this do you need to hire Harriet as a full time presenter? It's great getting the perspectives of all the pro riders on staff and the scientific break downs from Dr. Ollie, but I'd love to hear from a charismatic newbie from time to time.
Seeing Harriet achieve this is inspiring, and it brings back so many great memories of my "firsts" on a bike. That feeling of accomplishment is addictive. I hope we see more of Harriet on the channel
So, great video, Manon. There’s only so much of this vs that I can take. I think we all can agree that a high end race bike is not the right bike for Harriet -expensive, aggressive, highly responsive. So, what’s the right bike for Harriet or even Bruno? An endurance frame (Endurace), a gravel (Grail), or perhaps a hybrid (RoadLite)? Let’s find out!
Well done! I am just about to take up cycling again after a 50 year layoff (67 tomorrow). Have done the easy bit, bought my bike, bought and fitted all the accessories. Now to get on to a flat cycle track to get started again. Hoping to get a lot of weight off, help my blood sugar numbers and get some semblance of fitness again.
Great video as always! It would be very interesting to see the same video but on an "amateur" hybrid/commuter bike which more people are likely to own. I am sure it will be as fun given the breathtaking views and awesome cycling lanes!
