Great video thank you Anna nice to see an MTB being used for what a lot of people would consider mountain biking as opposed to hucking gap jumps. Really nice thank you
Love the video! More in my vibe than the usual gravity-oriented stuff on the channel. I definitely feel inspired. However, for me, a challenge would be to pass the barrier of 70 km on the tarmac with my gravel bike. A 100 miles (so about 160 km) off-road feels rather abstractive at the moment.
Living a long way from any real gradient, hills or rocks, this is pretty much how I do all of my riding on byways, bridleways, towpaths, fire roads and quiet lanes. I might do a couple of 50 milers a year but most of my riding like this is in the 20-40 mile range. A Gravel, XC or Downcountry bike is perfect for this kind of riding. 👍 Thanks for recognising that we don't all do gravity rides Anna. 👍
I like watching the jumping and epics abroad but this Anna was spot on. Like most here i can only ride 40-50 mile small hill stuff at a weekend due to equipment and money and time. You have inspired me to push a bit more. Good to see a normal popular ride on the channel. I never knew about the zones!
Huge thanks to Anna. I fell unwell that morning and was looking to bail 20 miles in, bit of a chat soon took my mind off it. Last 60 miles were pretty grim though, hated it 😂
@gmbn Anna sure did great, I went for a 20km bike ride the other day with 6 hills, and during the ride, I thought how tough her would have been for me 😢
Motivation - watching Anna ride 100+ miles off road! lol Great video and congrats! You've inspired me to try longer rides, I think not having food/energy supplements is capping my rides at around 1:30 to 2 hours at the moment. I'm usually out of energy after that, much appreciated!
Yes, it sounds like it. If you’re running out of steam it’s probably just food. Try eating some bananas and a sandwich next time if you don’t like energy product
Nice video Anna, and on an acoustic bike too, great effort and an inspiration for those of us who still like to do epics under our own steam. More of these please.
@@bri.b.b.9519 luddite? You know this is GMBN not EMBN right? Also, you're assuming I don't also have an ebike (which I do, and love) but still very often enjoy the challenge of epic mtb rides 'under my own steam'. Maybe try reading people's comments without the lens of your own prejudice. I wasn't making a comment about 'green credentials', it was about personal achievement. By your argument, why are we pedalling at all when we could all be riding motocross bikes?
The day I rode 100 miles on my hard tail was the day I resolved to buy a full suss. Kudos to you both for completing that epic ride. How about the South Downs Way for your next century ride?
30 years ago I was doing long rides like that at 14 years old. I learned to carry my tools. I did ran out of patch and had to call my dad to come pick me up. 25 minutes car drive my dad was really wondering how I went so far 😂 truth is we were going for 6 to 9 hours rides
Perfect timing - i’m about to do my first 100mile this sunday (combined with an overnighter in a tent). Let’s see how it’ll go, thanks for tips on fueling and „how 60grams of carbs look like”, helpful! Thx
Sort of just what I needed. I’ve not ridden since before lockdown and haven’t found the motivation to get any of my 3 bikes out for the trail or the gravel path. I’m also totally out of shape so not going to try 100miler any time soon but if I can just get out for a day…who knows!
Haven't done 100 miles yet but great to see how you prep for and work out how much food and fluid you need, compared to this I always overpack but better too much than too little 😂Thanks for sharin Anna, looked like a great cycling adventure! 😁
I’m a fairly new rider and have been kicking around the idea of doing a century ride but didn’t know how to do it properly. Thanks for the great video and inspiration!
We all have to start somewhere! You’ll be surprised what you can do. Find a friend who wants a challenge and try to do a 40mile loop one day. Go easy and eat lots!
Fantastic video! Love seeing Anna content and the info was very useful. I've only done a century ride on my road bike, haven't tried it on my MTB or gravel, should actually do one this summer.
She gives great advice and is very comprehensive. Although I'm not familiar with carb powder but I think a few snacks and a sugar free electrolyte mix in your water will keep you going similarly. Gatorade mix works well but I find it's too much sugar for the amount of fluid I usually drink on a ride.
Gatorade is one of the few drinks you can buy in a garage or cornr shop that actually has electrolytes in it! Carb powder is just food in powder form. It works for me, but not everyone will get on with it.
I use Mio Sport in one of my bottles, super easy to do 4 squirts then just fill with water. I'd hate to deal with powders. Mio probably does nothing on the carbs front, but it's got electrolytes, and it's yummy.
Nice effort: 100miles offroad is like 150 on tarmac ;) My typical ride is 40miles on gravel/offroad at XC bike with 300-400m climbs. Nice to explore some regions on 2 wheels!
A great video - 100 miles is about 160km for all the Aussies out there :) ) I live about ~40 minutes drive from my closest MTB park (Lysterfield, where the 2006 Commonwealth games MTB was held). Recently I decided rather than packing my car up with my MTB gear, why don't I just ride there? - so for the past few visits I have been riding the ~65km round trip for the ~16km MTB park loop on my gravel bike. All in all, it's about 75-85km (depending on the route and which tracks I ride at the MTB park), and only about 600m of elevation (Melbourne and surrounds aren't very hilly) - but it is so much more satisfying. This way you get to enjoy the journey AND the destination (and a sneaky KFC zinger burger on the way home). I love taking longer rides, enjoying the bicycle infrastructure around my state with bike paths, rail trails and the places they can take you.
Me and my boys have done a few big rides for charity the one for great ormond Street was a 300miler over a month i bit of more than what i could chew😂thank god they gave us a month to do it i did a 100miler up over brecon my fitness was ok but my butt was in pieces!! Great video anna👍👍👍👍👍
I try to do a century once a year here in the states ( Chicago to Milwaukee), I usually do it under the guise of a charity as my cover for doing it but it's really just because I can lol. Ppl accept it better and I get to raise money for a good cause 😁
Is that Newbold Comyn? I recognise that blue trail... not to mention Hunningham High Bridge, the Ridgeway and the Chesterton Windmill... all of my local ride spots!
A budget route is a Fitbit with your account synced to Strava (for better analysis and socials), but they don't seem built to last. It's good to track your route with something other than your phone though, so you have lots of battery for emergencies and post-ride normal life. After my last Fitbit died, I bit the bullet and spent more on a Samsung Galaxy watch (Android guy, but Apples to Apples for the rest of you, lol). It's nice to run Strava right on it, I just hope it lasts more than the year and a half I seemed to get out of my Fitbits.
Putting on something like a city type tyre or file tread would of made it even easier ! Surprising how well a MTB does go on long road or easy trail outings. I'm never that much slower timewise than using my road bike on steady local rides.
If you ride mostly in zone 1 and 2, carbs in your water bottles are more than enough as your body uses up fat stores comfortably. I never got hungry one bit in my long rides as long as I rode in zone 1 and 2. In zone 3 and 4 it's the opposite.
Yes, for bike packing I do like drop-bars for this reason, but I didn’t find it much of a problem that day. Front suspension helps relieve some tension, but I also rest the sides on my fists on the bars sometimes on smooth tarmac to simulate holding drops.
What the!? This route literally goes past my house! Twice! I need the map or gxl or whatever it's called... Edit: I was on that rusty bridge last week. I think I could use this as a target route.
My Ergon saddle is designed for pedalling in and “xc possition”, which means it’s a bit more curbed and designed for riding on the nose more than the back. Ergon’s e-bike saddle has a bigger and flatter surface at the back to accommodate a more upright riding style, which suited my long-distance position better. It’s a minor tweak but it works for me
Thank God for hard tails and tight shirts 😂 your such a badass chick all around! I just got back into mtb after 20 years and started watching gmbn and I always enjoy seeing you on the show. Keep it up Anna! 💪👍
