Been racing and modifying L67s for around 17 years. Have been 8.81@160 some time ago. The 3800 is under rated, especially once you get into turbo combos. 👍
Great review of the Calais, Ross. I love the work he’s put into this car to make it as quick as it is. I really like that he’s kept the exterior stock. It like the colour too. Love the sound of supercharger whine. The 0-100 was quite impressive. Would love see what time it could get with more traction and a better surface. A credit to the owner once again.
I bought a new l67 S pack in 1998 and still have it, around 270k km, completely stock. I remember going for a tour of Holden Engine Manufacturing plant in around 1997. They had a stack of these engines on crates that they imported ready made from USA sitting in bulk in one section of the building. I always wanted to turbo the VT with a compound setup but ended up turboing EA to EF falcons which was a better and easier car to make good power IMO.
We only work on these engines and have done so for 10yrs+, very underrated engine because they don't make massive hp, but def have the nm to make up for it
Now that is a nice little build. It's all tasteful, nothing OTT with stupid suspension, 22" Simmons and tacky stickers. Would make for an awesome daily, more than enough grunt for the street, but it's still a runs like a bone stock VY Calais.
4:05 the l67 has been around at least since the start of VT (1997), whereas the barra was released for BA (2002). I personally feel like it was more of a response to the VCT Intech given the similar power figures, even though I'm not sure which one was released first. edit: the l67 was first used in the VS, thank you to those who pointed this out
Possibly but there was many turbo SOHC E-Series getting around in the 90s. That's the reason Ford turbocharged the Barra because they seen how good those street builds were
Cheers mate, In this colour with the l67 and cream/brown leather interior, I had never seen before, one of then reasons I bought was to have something different
Comon dude...if you did your research you'll have known the V6 supercharged was around in the VS days long before the Barra turbo...it wasn't an answer to the Barra turbo..and I'm a Ford fan I even known this the excuses on its slow 0-100 times is funny...the fact is wll those Holdens from VN-VY all struggled to put decent times doen to the fact the chassis was about 30 years old by 2005....more power thrown at that wont fix the slow result hence why stock BA and BF turbos flog them because its much newer chassis
I don’t research unless it’s a review.. this was a modified car just showing it off.. I don’t know everything about these cars.. didn’t grow up here.. VY / BA that’s why I said that.. I read all the comments n learn from that FYI
As much as the revised sv6 engine would have been nice with a supercharger or turbo, why would they? Off the floor it made 190kw from 3.5L, which was 19kw more than the supercharged 3.8L L67. I've always thought the L67 had shockingly low figures for it's size, both in NA and SC form. This here, is very good to see a L67 made into the engine that it should have been from factory.
To be honest the 3.8l didn't really need more power, it needed more gears. I remember my series 1 WH ecotec would do 70kmh in 1st gear and 130kmh in 2nd gear. They should have gave it 6 gears before getting rid of it.
Glad to see an L67 on this channel... Something different to an LS and when they're done right (like this one), they fly down the road... Great review 👍 BTW, I'm pretty sure the owner also had a Supercharged CV6 Monaro (or maybe not)
They go alright for a little v6 with a little blower sitting on top mate. That's correct, Evan currently has a 2003 vy monaro factory l67 sitting in the shed waiting for parts and we will begin working on that shortly 😉
Nice set up...there a great motor...had one did over 450,000 klm with no rebuild on gas...great review....if the owner could get some air from outside the engine bay into that charger......would definitely help .......👍👍👍
7:51 - "Faaaaarkin 'ell maaayte!" Lol! I have a 2002 VY wagon that's currently stock and in pretty good condition, being a daily driver for 20 years. I'd love to do something similar with it - retain the original look as a bit of a sleeper, but with a hell breathing supercharged six under the bonnet! This is really inspiring, cheers Ross and @TinShed!
Similar engine to Buick gnx 1987+ GM 3.8l turbo 250hp-300hp, commodore/Calais had l67 3.8l supercharged 230hp-250hp? Should of put Buick gnx engine in commodore lot of potential, but probably would of had same problem that ford had with the xr6 turbo out performing the xr8, and Holden learnt that earlier from Nissan skyline engine rb30et in vl commodore turbo out performing majority of stock v8 commodores.
The Auto really puts this in the meh category for me, TR6060 is needed. Whatever you do do not get wiper tech, blades made of chocolate, they ban negative reviews, Bosch aero or Valeo only, they spend all their money on marketing and not the product, they last me only 3 months and streak, tear, bosch last years.
I hope you went and paid Baz at brushworks slick Sixers while you were in Brissy mate?. Him and another Baz are the kings of l67s in Australia! 😁🤘. I have a nice VY l67 as well. Not stock at all 😁
What are you talking about , it's a 4L65e four speed auto ! The 4 at the start of its name means 4 speed and the L at the end means longitudinal the 65 means power rating and little e means full electronic!
Thanks for the review John. I had a fully optioned tungsten grey 2004 L67 Calais and I loved it. Such an underrated car and engine, but also underwhelming without mods. So I went ahead and did a 10psi pulley swap, water to air intercooler, exhaust and tune and it was awesome. Cam, rockers and stroker kit and they become an absolute weapon. Another car that I can add to the list of regretful sales.
@shaunsankey5836 hold onto it mate. It's a unicorn. This is only my opinion, but the VL and VY were the best Commodores to roll off the production line. Subscribed to your channel. Cheers
I almost scored a hot house green S Pac L67 factory manual in 2018 for 4k but after talking with my parents we were like nah we already had too many cars and we recently sold a auto l67 in the same colour. We should've done it in 2018 because now it would be worth triple that price
I've got a couple l67. After building the factory stroker in the vr I wanted to play with the l67 after knowing a bloke with an 11.1 VP with one. With the price of ls motors and getting a 304 quick they're good option. I'd owned plenty of turbo cars but never a blower so decided to go that way. The 210 @.050 refreshed stock l67 with headers and a spacer is cool in the vu/vy/vz mongrel ute I've got. Now I've got a +1 mm oversize , forged rod , main studded , 216/226 xpz cammed , a2a motor on the stand with a Baz modified blower for a vs. Another 100rwhp and 300kgs lighter should be exciting!
Great video, nice wheels, I run a tuned 99 STI, and one of these gave me a run, was surprised to see it keep up, not sure what he had done, could only see exhaust and wheels but rolling from 80kph, it pulled even till around 120-130ish
In the states, the 3800 had quite a following for being very reliable and easy to make power for. Scene for it is nearly dead now, but still lots of built 3800s trolling
I love the VY supercharged. Rare car and very very desirable now. Im so upset because my family sold a hot house green supercharged S pac auto very cheap it was a bit rough but still good. Then found a supercharged hot house green manual supercharged at a 2ndnhand dealer ship for 4k in 2018 we almost bought it then didnt. Now im swearing at myself everyday because now that car is worth at least 10--13k and we couldve had ine for under 5k in manual. Cars were cheap.before covid. 😢
The Calais as a Series 1 VY in this colour with the cream/brown leather interior and L67 is pretty scarce, I've never seen another one with that colour/engine selection.
This thing is cool! So good to see something different and away from the ls's. They'll always be cool, but good to see people stepping outside the circle and daring to do something different. Keen to see this around brissy sometime, props to the guys who built it.
We are based on the Northside, give us a wave if you see me mate 👋 We have done everything ourselves except for paint job, gearbox rebuild, headwork LS's are fun but everyone has one
I once had a WH Statesman L67, I only did roller rockers and a pulley upgrade, and it was easily one of my favourite cars I've ever owned and would own another if i could find the right one. (Someone crashed into mine and wrote it off)
, you should have keep it for parts , , hopefully you be able to det another , one , , Hope you got paid out from the crash , people's do not look and bad judgements when driving, it sucks when shit happens , they are really , Good looking ,car that why brought one for 2000 grand , interior Good little more room at the back , , need a tidy up on the engine and paint , that ok , but it still go even with water issues , and rust underneath , and I even got people's want to buy it , , slowly doing it up , , new batt ,fuel pump ,starter , fuel filter, tyres , I'm just glad I can do it myself repairs , 😊 after someone side swiped my l67 Calais that riden off but still GOES 😅😅😅 AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT , JUST NEEDS PANEL AND DOORS REPLACED AND BACK ON DRIVING , WITH WATER ISSUES , ,, GOT NEW CASKETS FOR IT,, just a common things that needs replacing , ,
Loved my vy s2 calais l67, but couldn't say no to th 6.0 vz calais when a friend decided to sell, both were the same colour so some friends thought I had engine swapped haha
I had a hsv senator l67 and she was a grunty beast always wanted to mod it unfortunately sold it as after wet weather you could hear at least a bucket load of water sloshing around everytime you turned a corner holden problems eh
L67s are awesome especially in the earlier model Commodore and statesman had one in a vs statesman not much could touch it at the traffic lights quick off the mark
@@catfishcalais Been watching the Monaro build as well mate! I've been watching all the videos the day they come out since you blokes started the Calais resto, Keep up the great content mate!
