I could hear my bro talk all day about cars. He's descriptive and knowledgeable, and that's so hard to find nowadays. This is a Class A interview here. 👏 Congrats Alpha, this was a W for sure.

This guy speaks my language! He's an engine guy who knows his shit, not a purist who's stuck on one thing, but open minded and well versed in many platforms. We never heard anyone else talking and comparing so many great engines.. m10, m20, m50, m52, s52, n54, n55, s63, hemi apache, k, b, h, jz, rb, 4g, coyote, daza, aan, 3b...

Met Frank at 2014 H2oi when I had my 325is e30. Bruh was sitting on the side of Coastal chillin and I asked about his build. I thought it was a m3...when I tell you, he schooled me on not only his build but bmw's in general, changed my life. I loved BMW's but I didn't know how deep the rabbit hole went with the lore or what was possible with the various engine platforms. I continued to see Frank at events/tracks like Englishtown, and he was always beating cars he had no business beating, but would break and showed up better like nothing happened. I hit him up when I was building my m52b28 and he gave me the same formula he said in the vid. I ended up going a different direction, building my s54, but everything he's saying is straight-up facts. Frank is the truth, and I'm glad he did this interview. This podcast is goated. But, now I have to port my s54 exhaust lol.

Bro this was refreshing having someone who truly knows his stuff. You should interview Devin Niemela hes the first 2020? Type R AWD. Theres also this crazy smart engineer who built the 1st AWD Mustang. He fabs and programs just about everything in his home garage and his channel is No Production Value Garage. It would be awesome to get some more innovative small time builders who really actually know what they're doing while pushing the boundaries.

But as a "retired" racer im happy to see people still pushing the platform 20 years later. Also cool hearing rktunes.. we sold jordan our tube chassis e36 back in day.

32:09, they may use different scale for hp and tq, or plot tq in nm (then you need 30% bigger numbers on the side), or is scaled to fit hp cheating happens in correction factor 33:44 crank/wheel, its same hp when doubling, so doesn't matter.. also 300hp 300tq - tq would need to be in nm, even an m54b30 does only that amount 50:54 this surprises me, who even does turbos on stock motronic ecu? pnp boards are out for m50 for 10years, i know there were ton of guys running Megasquirts 14+years back. With Siemens ecu its a bit different, it can be done on ms41 but you are somewhat limited (resistor to maf signal or even bigger maf) and you still only need $300 for pnp ecu (speeduino for example). MS43 is a bit better at turboing but still, what you dont invest in standalone you will pay in number of tunes you will need, and in parts you brake. And in the end of the day, if you want to dial it up, you will need to get standalone either way. But going from cheaper standalone to more expensive (lets again use speeduino, and then going to emu black with tcu lamik for 8hp) you already have build running engine correct way, you don't rely on factory sensors (and their number or application, lets say you now have even with cheap ecu (rusefi uaefi is $100, has build in o2 and dbw) you can have fuel and oil pressure in, crankcase/coolant pressure, and have fully working boost by gear and boost cut, with non fuel cut limiters (spark cut) and would other way knock you engine on limiter with pump gas) 1:14:21 oil pump chain tensioner is needed, welding the nut doesn't solve the issue, that way you will just snap shaft or part where its welded. At high rpm it has harmonics/slop in chain that normaly drives nut off 1:37:33 they didn't even have 100k miles, much lower as they were new cars, problem was BMW wouldn't support BMW Motorsport with brand new engines, so BMW Motorsport had to source them from road going vehicles ( this was true for year or two, after that they got deal with BMW). Similar thing with Subaru, any Subaru wrc or autocross head has nothing to do with Subaru, they get casted in England with totally different ports shape and location. 1:37:51 not true, they weren't seasoned, or even outside, block are ruined by that (just look on L19 material.. hydrogen embrittlement is thing in any material and metal, even plastics). In time they made 800-1000hp, all block were brand new from BMW. Also don't believe horsepower claims. You cant make that amount of hp at that pressure with fuel they used. As said, they are at best 1000-1150hp (in qualification with blowing turbo/engine after lap/one straight) .. not 1400 or 1600hp for a lap like some say. In normal racing it was 650-800hp engine.

Sounds like he know his way around bmw's for sure, but there has bin many awd e36 with +1000hp over here in Europe the last +20 years. Nothing new under the sun there.. but its still an awesome build he got. 🏁🏁🏁 He seems like a good guy

I got a m52 with m50 head 6266 percision single top mount, etc etc in my 1989 e30 vert. I did almost of the work myself but damn I wish I had the knowledge to figure out awd. I don't even have a cage so my car leaves brown stains but hoping to get a ford 8.8 rear this summer to help put the power down smoother 🙏

I am an engineer as well..could have told you before he said so.. you can tell someone with that mindset and experience right off the rip.. Some people just don't think like that.. They just know shit works, and some have to find out and understand how it works.. I have 4 men in my family that are engineers, Grandpa and Father both worked as automotive engineers for GM.. I do fiber optics and systems engineering, but been into mechanical & cars & trucks my whole life.. Its def passed down in your genes..

Boost by rpm is also great in stand alone ecus, Many turbo cars are ruined with that 4000-5000 turbo spike and after that its only wheelspin. Tuneup boostmap by rpm and its possible to make more useable powerband
