It's been a long time since we had an Outlander 650 on site so instead of focusing on its camo dip, Luke gets down and dirty exploring the performance of Can-Am's 62 horsepower V-twin Outlander 650 Mossy Oak Edition.

I really enjoyed this review. I have been going back and forth on a 850cc or 1000cc engine. Becsuse like you, I have an "ego" problem. But this made me feel a lot more optimistic about choosing a 650. Also the Mossy Oak addition. Not a fan of the cammo, but for what you get, that's a great deal for a can am.

I have the 650 Max Winter Edition (250kms), I was towed out of the woods a couple of days ago (by older Arctic Cat TRV 500....😢) because the engine stopped and would not start. I discovered a blown fuel pump fuse......hope it’s an isolated incident. Also, I find the driveline makes some interesting clunking noises when transitioning between engine power(pull) vs engine braking, particularly descending in low gearing, also widely known as “Canam Clunk”, I’ve been told by dealer that it’s normal engineered drive line play necessary to prevent damage. Otherwise the performance, comfort and handling are superb. Would love to see more videos relating to long term reliability of older machines, not just performance based reviews of new machines. Love the channel!

I have a 570 outlander and it absolutely rips. The only time I’ve ever thought more power would be nice is at the sand dunes. The clutching is so spot on it just flys. Pops wheelies with ease, just as fast or faster than any of the Japan 750s. If I get another quad instead of side x side I will probably go bigger, cause why not!

Totally agree I had a 800 renagade sold it and brought a 650 pro more practical and does the same job. Never really needed all the renagade power as I am more of a weekend explorer has good load capacity for all my gear the 2020 only cost me $12,500 Aussie really really happy. Thanks Can Am 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌️

Having spent time on the full Can am line up as well as many of the competitors big bore bikes I agree with the guys 100%. If I had the choice of any ATV I wanted this would be it other than I would get the Outlander Max 650 XT in black! It is simply awesome at everything it does and the Max Chassis allows you to bring a friend or carry extra gear - something that isn’t an option with a couple brands. For technical riding the throttle response is perfect working your way through the rocks and then t has plenty of power to chuck mud when your in the deep stuff. One thing that wasn’t mentioned is resale. The mid class bikes hold their value and I believe have a broader appeal in the used market. It’s an easier sell to the better half if you are buying a bike that can do it all - work on the farm, trail ride, plot snow or take family and friends out for a ride. This machine just does it all!

My wife and I have owned a number of can-am outlanders. Including a few 1000cc a 800 cc and a 650cc. Without a doubt the 650 cc was the best handeling and well balanced. There were plenty of situations where the power delivery was just about perfect with the 650. The others could just be abrupt and less controllable in the technical mountain riding that we do. The power of the 650 cc was very satisfying and more than capable for towing a trailer hunting or working.

On Point review! Coming from a pro, that's a serious reality check on how much power the average rider really needs ! I'd love to see a segment on assembly quality and reliability of the big bore atv's . Its something alot of us struggle with when making the move from proven lower hp rides coming from yam, suzuki etc.. to high power machines from polaris or can am . It's a mess online , ppl compare high power machine to old tech singles. Not an apples to apples comparison. Keep up the great work

Buuuuuut , the sticky shifter , molar rattling howl , and unpredictable steering problem keeps my wallet closed . I will say that can am has the best made to fit accessories in the biz . A very relaxing driver feel , good suspension and great dealer support. My opinion is that the can am short falls are easy fixes at the engineering level and can not be hidden like a hunter in the woods by camo print .

I was surprised by the comment about other manufacturer's HP ratings on larger engines as compared to the Rotax 650. A buddy has the 700 Grizzly and if the comment is accurate I'll have quite a bit more HP with the Rotax 650 than he has with the 700. Interesting.

@dirttraxtv
@dirttraxtv 2 года назад
The only restrictions could be performance modifications that would call into question the safety of the vehicle or the applicant's actual insurance track record. Outside of that, most offroad vehicles are insurable. Now, that's me talking from Canada on the advice received from a Canadian Insurance broker. Could be different outside this country.

Thank you for reviewing! I hunt; and have been curious about this bike for a long, long time (I have never seen..but have been looking for a review of this specific bike for over 2 years). I LOVE that it comes with the metal skid plates (standard). I am looking for a bike that can do well in rocky hills/mountain areas of California High Desert and Mountains. Camo is very important. Have not owned a quad yet (only rented and borrowed), but am trying to decide between between this bike......and a Camo 650 Max XT. Only reason for considering the Max is I think I may do a little better with the the longer wheel base due to the amount of off camber riding that I will do...but 650 Max does not come with skid plates nor with heated grips, etc......and I would have to spend another $800.00 just for the skid plates. ......And thus 650 Mossy Oak will probably be the winner. Thanks again for reviewing, this video was just what I was looking for.

A good friend of mine bought this exact machine after his Honda Rincon 680 finally died after he put about 25,000 km on it. He told me on a few occasions he wished he switched to the Cam Am years ago. He said it was much more stable and a lot more powerful even though the Rincon had a larger motor. I actually picked up a holdover 2019 can am outlander 1000 mossy oak edition a few weeks ago. I was originally calling about a 2020 outlander 850 xt but the dealer gave me a heck of a deal on the holdover model so I went with it. I was not crazy about the camo but all of the other included features (winch, aluminum skid plates, hand warmers) really helped to sell me on it. I guess I couldn’t resist getting the 1000 engine as well. It’s overkill for essentially every trail I ride but it’s fun. That being said, I would definitely look at getting a 650 in the future in addition to the 1000. It would be cool if the 650 got the electronic throttle and modes like the bigger can am engines.

I can have a great time on any machine regardless of power. A harsh ride on choppy trails is what'll ruin your day. Ride comfort is more important to me than power. Hard to enjoy power if the suspension, frame and tires struggle to absorb trail chatter and bounce you all over the place. Luckily most new quads have plenty of both.

There is only like a $500 MSRP difference between the 850 XT and the 650 XT. I agree that the 650 is a great motor but CAN AM doesn’t do the 650 any favors when it comes to the pricing strategy. A side note, the 850 XT-P is the damn near perfect all around quad.

@@MattSmith-vl8zp Yamaha is fully capable of making a nice torquey V-twin. Instead, they are sticking with the same outdated 45 hp 686 tired single. A single piston moving up and down does nothing to enhance the "gyoscopic" effect. Yamaha is just being cheap, just getting by. People here (desert southwest) have stopped buying Yamaha quads and SxS's. We almost never see them. Trails are hundreds of miles long, and mountains are everywhere. Why is the head of Yamaha allowing this to happen? Same as Suzuki. Suzuki is almost dead. The 686 might be OK for the flat midwest or east coast, but not here. At high elevations where the air is thin, that 45 hp is probably down to 39 or 40. Combine that with steep uphill trails for 20 miles straight and it becomes not so fun. Horsepower is not just to show off. On high mountain trails that are steep, it's a necessity.

@thegodfreyspecial423 4 года назад
I have 2017 570 with no power steering. I would say depends on your target riding whether you'll want it or not. If tons of open trail and moderate to high speeds its not needed. If lots of low speed, technical, rocks, or mix thereof you might want the EPS. I don't regret not opting for it - but steering effort can be quite high at low speeds. The 570 is a very smooth motor that is soft on torque on the bottom end and pulls pretty hard up top.
@hunterharrell7491

Most atvs don't need power steering but on Can am, I would recommend it because mine doesn't have it and the visco lock fights you the whole time
@dirttraxtv

Again, I don't think a lot of ATVs "need" EPS, but once you've ridden with it, you will definitely appreciate the difference.

Great video (as always). Very good review on a great machine! All that HP (even on the 650) is fun, but not always and added benefit on my favorite trails. The avg. speed on some of my favorite trails is around 20mpg (or less) with lots of rocky terrain, twists & turns, off camber situations, steep climbs, mountains, etc... It's my favorite style of riding through rough and rocky terrain surrounded by beautiful forests. Nothing beats the handling, agility, maneuverability, and stability offered by my Honda Rubicon (only around 30 HP). I'd compare my Rubicon to a sure footed mountain goat, this 650 Outlander to a work horse, and the 850 and up Outlander as powerful thorougbreds. As I've ridden with higher HP machines, it's clear, that for the vast majority of our favorite riding conditions, that extra HP just isn't that useful. I'd take my smaller, lighter, sure footed mountain goat any day of the week. That said, I respect those that want to open up that throttle on wide logging roads, gravel roads, or highways so they can capture that high HP feeling of these big bores. It's fun, I get it... but it doesn't beat the feeling of traversing tight rocky trails (in my opinion).

Great comments! I'm getting into ATV'ing what with my Dad having a CFMOTO CForce 600, and we just got his friends old 1992 Yamaha 350cc Big Bear running after sitting for about three years with a broken intake manifold and gummed up carburetor. We live in an area with extensive logging roads, some OHV parks, miscellaneous trails, no mud bog riding, and likely will not or rarely be in sand dunes. A Can Am Outlander Max is at the top of my shopping list and was wondering about engine sizes. Your insights provided good input. I.e. I see myself exceeding 40 mph only infrequently, with lots of riding speeds more in the 10-20 mph range. As such, the 850cc & 1000cc engine sizes are just not necessary. I imagine the 550cc model would be adequate but do like extra margin for those long uphill pulls with some speed. Anyway, good stuff and good input that I appreciate.

I purchased the new #2021 #xmr #650 and I love it. I have the 2019 outlander 450 already. Both purchased new. I will say that the 650 is definitely a step up in all ways. Won't feel right to a heavier guy over 2025 lbs but anyone under that weight will love the power and torque with handling capabilities. Can't go wrong with the Canam Outlander series of Atv. They are solid. 3 year warranty (Paid) not free.! But they are the top 🔝 when speaking about overall sport feel and ride. So if you are in the market for a midrange Atv, the 650 in all trims, produces what you want and need at a decent price. Anyone over 225 lbs I'd recommend the 850 simply because of the weight of the rider and power of engine. ☑️🆗🏁
