Going to look at one of these tomorrow, thanks for the review! I want to use it for touring, snow plowing and hauling firewood so review was a huge help to me! Thank you!
That's why I do these video's so people can have some real reviews, before spending there hard earned money on stuff like this. thank you! so much for watching and your feedback.
I have an 800 Can Am. It is a very good machine. But here are six complaints you missed; 1) When driving on a reasonably smooth road, the passenger seat is fine for the passenger. But if there is a lot of abrupt up and down motion, such as dropping into deep ruts or in and out of ravines, the high seat back restricts the passenger's ability to 'give' with the bump. By restricting motion of the lower back, this in turn transfers more jarring motion to the passenger's upper back and neck. 2) I have tracks, and this is where the heat REALLY becomes a problem. Even when it is snowing, if I sustain a hill climb even at a modest speed and on packed snow, heat from the exhaust pipe near my thigh actually melts the fairing plastic to the point that it drips liquified plastic. Wrapping the exhaust pipe with heat tape is a must. 3) When driving in really slick conditions, Can Am's Viscous front clutch is no match for the locking front differential found in Polaris, Arctic Cat and others. The front wheel with the least traction spins way too much before the viscous system transfers any power/torque to the other wheel. 4) The floorboards are supported underneath by aluminum bars which protrude down enough to catch rocks and sticks that get kicked upwards. The rocks make a loud, annoying bang as they are batted away. However, sticks occasionally get kicked up such that one end is captured between the aluminum rods and floorboard while the other end gets wedged into the ground. The result is that twice, a stick has speared its way THROUGH the floorboard, breaking it, and kicked my foot up off the floorboard. Had I been going fast it could have impaled my foot or leg. The solution is to mount a skid plate that runs the full width of the floorboard. However, the downside to this is it further reduces ground clearance, which is not great to begin with. 5) Can Am's listed ground clearance is exaggerated, in particular between the front wheels. I also own a Polaris ATV. Although both state 11 inches, the front of the Can Am has quite a bit less. On roads strewn with larger rocks the Polaris consistently clears what the Can Am hits. 6) The Can Am weighs a lot less than a Polaris, which is good. However, one of the ways Can Am reduces weight is by using a trailing arm suspension at the rear. On very rough, rocky terrain, the trailing arm suspension is quite a bit harsher than the A-arm independent suspension found on all the other full sized quads. Can Am should adopt the A-arm suspension at the rear
Great honest review and spot on with your comments. I have owned Can Am's starting with '07 up to now a pair of 2013's. 500's, 650's and 1000's - all great machines. Thanks for your views.
I myself found the 650 had the perfect amount of power for 2up and mudding! The rad relocation is good if your just mudding. But that front rack is handy for long trips and camping!
I had a Polaris 850 2 up which I babied. Nothing but problems. I now have the Can Am 850 Max xt and so far so good. its a 2016 with less than 400 miles. I do agree about the heat on my ankles and wet feet lol. Good video.
I was kinda worried about buying a can Am, because their forum is nothing but horror stories. I bought a max 1000r max XTP because the wife likes to ride and we wanted more room. I have had a year now, and we love it. It is a very nice, solid machine. I can't tell you how much of joy it is to ride. I love it and it has converted this Honda man for life.
Zero Horror stories from both my kings. 7000km on wifes 500 and 9400 km on my 750. I drive it hard. Brakes changes and fluids. That's it. I had to snorkle my clutch though. They sit to low in the rear of the kings.
How do you find having a MAX model VS a regular length model? I want the MAX but we do a lot of tight trail riding and I wonder if it can be just too long at times.
I own the 2016 Outlander Max XT 850. Summertime heat ya its a little warm. Im going to put a chunk of rubber under right foot well. Very happy with it. Thanks for the vid.
Great review, answered a lot of questions i had about the bike. I plan to buy an outlander very shortly. I am going to go with the 1-up XT 650. Is your plow the 60" straight? Also is your push frame the quick attach system, if so how do you find its performance? Thanks.
I took this video to mind when purchasing my 2018 outlander 650 max. It’s everything you mentioned. Now 2 years old and 9500 km later, just a couple minor issues like rear diff seal, and starting switch. I added 1” spacers, 2” lift, larger tires and rad relocate. I have really nothing negative to say and Not once have I ever said to myself I need more power. Thanks for your honest review. My next purchase will most likely be an 850 max in the next couple years just because.
I have a 2008 Outlander 500 Max so far I have 100 hours and have done the following New fuel pump New drive belt New radiator New thermostat New radiator cap Updated overflow res cap New tires New left rear cv axle Changed the fluids Altogether upkeep has costed me $802 I did all the work myself
Great review! Thank you! Quick question for you... Where did you find the small storage box that replaces the 2 up when removed? I really want one but can’t find it anywhere.
My wife and I have a 2005 400 Outlander Max almost 100 miles no problems , we have went up some really steep hills, mud, noting seems to faze it, great machine
Thanks for the info. Is there any solution to heat problem other than wrap stuff. I want to use this machine in the summer but that heat problem confusing me. Is there any good brand 2UP and without heat issue? cuz I see Polaris also has.
Great video thanks for the honest review. I’ve always been a Honda guy, but I’m really leaning towards can am. Gonna keep doing some research before I make the big purchase.
Please do yourself a BIG favor and stay with Honda, l bought a new 2014 650 Outlander and a week after warranty was off with only 300 miles on it, it started giving electrical trouble. First it wouldn't turn over and the micro chipped ignition switch failed, bought a new one, than the 4wd wouldn't shift in and if it did than it wouldn't shift out, than the headlights quit, traced that back to the same ignition switch that doubles as the head light switch. Rather than lay out another $150 l put another set of lights on the rack. It has always been kept inside and has never went "mud bogging" it is my wife's quad and she doesn't loan it to anyone. It still only has 900 miles on it and has been nothing but a pain in the butt. Sorry l couldn't have warned you sooner, hopefully you haven't already bought one of these yellow nightmares.
@@allanwheel4648 I appreciate your input. I haven’t bought yet but I’m leaning towards the Honda for reliability. My only problem with Honda is the horsepower. I will primarily be using mine for hunting, but I would like good power in the event that I want to trail ride or go mudding. I think the 650 would give good power for that and would handle a lift and bigger tires as well. But I may just be overthinking it.
I bought a 2016 Yamaha Grizzly 700 se with 2200 km’s. Couldn’t be happier, great machine and plenty of speed for me. Bike will do 105 kph. I mostly use my bike for ice fishing and back lake fishing. Not much of a mud guy, but won’t shy away from it.
i have a 2004 Qwest Max and its is the best machine i have owned.. I just do the gen maintenance yearly and the total every two years. I have pulled Elk deer Logs trailers and all kind of thing with this thing. We have even named him Buddy.. he runs great and will be the last one I own. I will keep him running as long as I can and hand him down in the family.. Very nice.. Long wheel base is much better than the short.. Very Nice ...
i own a 2011 can am outlander 800r and it has great power and still looks brand new with only a little over 300 miles on it but only complaint i have is the fuel pump went out on me and it was 327 bucks
I have a 2016 red one like this. I e had several ATV’s and UTV’s too. I have about 400 miles and now have to do my 4th brake job. The brakes suck and the digital display failed as well as the power steering. Any suggestions on the brakes? The power if awesome and the ride is great but the brakes have been horrible. The dealer says it’s where I ride but I ride at my farm and don’t do heavy mud bogging. So I’m confused. Suggestions welcomed.
I’m in the mood for a new quad traded my 18 570 sportsman in towards a Kawasaki krx 1000 side by side and have missed it since gonna keep my side by side but looking at this in the 850 but because of the price difference I’m now considering the 650 in the max version cause I wanna ride double with my wife but the big part of me wants the 850 and considered settling for a single seater just to get the 850 but I know I really need the 2 seater that’s a great looking quad I know this video is a bit old would like to know how it’s still holding up I looked at a Honda but 10$k for 28 Hp just don’t seem like enough for quad for the money compared to this or outlanders other line up models
I had a can am max xt 650 ,I abused it. But this was way before 1000 was made. In a creek I broke the drive shaft I purchased brand new. Since i had extensive work to do hmm i king of went for it. Cams, big block kit to 850, wheels tires, power commander, exhaust. All parts from mr rpm. I'll have to buy another
love the honesty. I drive nothing but big bores. can am polaris kawasaki anything with a twin cylinder. if can am would not throw so much darn heat to my legs and have a front working diff I would buy a can am. but as of right now I'll stick with my 2015 polaris
have you checked your rear diff oil for metal, those G2 diffs are bad, has your gauge cluster cracked, and check your water pump for a leaking seal, if the tube coming off the water pump the seal has to be replaced
Great Video , i have the same machine and would like to go with the Maga Mayhem tires , did you do any type of lift kit or cutting of your fenders in order to fit the 28s ? The stock tires/rims on the outlanders are 26x10-R12s and I'd really like to go the same route as what you've done , but just wanted to see what i would have to do in order to make the change . Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks
Hey mate, thanks for your review. I'm from Germany and did not understand that clutch thing. How does that work? Completely new clutch changed by the dealer? What kind of clutch with that bigger tires and what does that cost aproximately please? :)
Budget, both are great, keep in mind, can am 570 is just as powerful as a grizzly 700... 650/850 simply are more expansive versions with bigger bumpers, engine, handlebar guard, winch, tires, etc.
Just want to say can am is the most beautiful comfortable Quad to ride. I own a king Quad I had a sportsman nothing matches the comfort of can am it’s only done 1,000ks hope it lasts
How is the power of the 650 for you? I have a TRX 400 and do lots of mountain riding. I'm eyeing the Outlander Max to bring family members but still want some peppyness when I'm riding alone.
How do you find having a MAX model VS a regular length model? I want the MAX but we do a lot of tight trail riding and I wonder if it can be just too long at times
I must admit when the turn is tight, the longer wheelbase does make a difference, but nothing you can't get done without 3 pointing it. (well most of the time anyway)... It is the nicest riding 2 Up I have ever encountered.
that's good to hear, you have had a good experience with your machine. a lot of reviews ARE CRAPPY about can am. big money fixes over stupid stuff. I am thinking a lot of the problems are from the factor assembly not being put together right in the first place. bought my wife a Polaris 850 touring because the two ups have great handling and more stability.
I just bought the same quad and after 20 mins the power steering overheat light comes on is there something I can do to stop that or help the power steering not heat up
Hello I have a question I just bought a can am and want to install a back seat. I have a question the back seat I bought it on Amazon. The kit that I bought is the Outlander Max Seat (Kit P/N 715002032) but for some reason it seems it does not fit or clips on. Can you please do a video on how your's is on the ATV? Thanks,s
This video just popped up for me in August 2023. I have two questions. Do you still own this machine and how has it held up? I’m looking at buying my first quad next year and the MAXX is one of the front runners.
No I sold it after I test drove a CFMOTO. The outlander max was a good machine had a few issues with it. It all depends on what you are going to do with it. If you are into riding in deep mud then ya the outlander is what you will want. If you are looking for a touring machine then take a look at CFMOTO. The ride of a CFMOTO is more comfortable and the machine really holds up to every day abuse.
I have a 2019 Outlander max two up 650. I'm just a trail cruiser that putts around to check out the view nothing crazy. I put 200.6 miles on it in one year, with around 48 hours of engine time. My machine said hi temp limp mode. That is just sad. Fan is bad it's in the shop. My winch clicks and dont work at times. Warn sent me a new solenoid. I paid $11,500 for this and for it to be over heating this soon is ridiculous. I bout my daughter a 2020 outlander 450 and if she has issues with others I'm going back and riding honda again. I bought can am because it looks better than other brands. Mine dont look good in the shop. Crossing my fingers.
I sell used ATVs for a living, I know you are leaving out important details. It doesnt matter if it polaris can am yamaha or honda that you are driving you shouldnt have that those issues within the first year. Your winch issue is related to corroded batteries, which doesn t happen from poor build but rather the natural elements getting inside. It maybe be from snow or salt on roads or you leaving it out in the rain.
I've heard a few that are noisy! Mine is quiet! It's just the bolts holding the weights on the clutch! You can put small washers in and it stops the noise!
Yea a few of the guys I ride with have a noise on slow rocky terrain it's normal won't hurt anything, I had 2 sportsmans and they were horrible for it, not to mention they were junk, they don't hold there value at all, took a loss and bought the 570 xmr renegade it's a beast Honda just ain't got the power and Yamaha is the most uncomfortable bike I ever drove
I’m not exactly sure how high the psi the fuel pump has to put out it slips my mind right now but if it’s not high enough they have a hard time starting and The pump has to work harder when it’s cold so you might have to put a new fuel pump in
im 13 and not new to motor sports and this is what im looking at i plan on just using it for fun but just how do i convince my parents to buy me one.... lol
Adam Does things my original belt from 2008 had 100 hours and was still good if I had not let it sit too long. If you're going to let it sit take off the belt put it in a controlled climate
super easy, it is a leaver inset in the lower back of the seat, pull it and then tilt the seat forward a bit, then pull back to disengage from the forward anchor point. Takes 5 seconds. You then grab the "Glove Box" and snap it right in with the LinQ system and you are good to go.
Malvern Michael you gotta rock with it some. And when mine won’t shift gears I just rev it to a little over 1000 rpms (my clutch doesn’t engage until around 2500) and then once it dies down I shift. Or when it won’t go from high to low I put it in low when it still doesn’t read low on the board and give it a little rev and it pops into gear fine
Just my opinoin great video. hope to see more. have you had any issues with your front visco lock not locking in? I know it usually takes 4-6 turns on the one tire to engage 4x4. that is annoying to wait for diff to lock up
Fantastically Dillon that's a G1 visco. G2 is not even half rotation. mine is quick. no complaints on the 4wd. I have a larger max. weight is my only complaint
So now you are telling me that a Can-Am Outlander 1000R XMR would beat a Can-Am Renegade 1000R in mud? The renegade is arround 100kg lighter than the Outlander XMR
You would want the Renegade MR version which on the Renegade really stands for Mud Relocator-on rider! So wear a rubber suit if you don't like being covered in your own roost. LOL! I used to be all about less weight on 4x4 quads but there all heavy after 600lbs. With the same tires, I'd say Its a coin toss between the two. Lighter does'nt always win especially for deep swamp water the newer Outlander 1000xmr is the longer (and heavier) max chassis for a reason, so it can go deeper as long as you keep the nose in the air that is. Lighter quads want to float more in the deep water thats where wheeling through it is the key and the rear tires are really doing the propelling.
Destroy It Thats why it has 1000cc to keep wheelying. The 850 would do it too if in a max chassis. I will still stay away though. Poor turning radius and I do allot of bush riding too...
Destroy It, There great but get fender flares if you havent yet. Just something I would do. My nephew rides a 570 gade without flares and he is black head to toe with mud. Its always a good laugh though...
This visco lock debate is an interesting one...every single can am ive ever ridden has locked the front wheels more than fast enough to get me out of very tough situations...im guessing these people complaining about the visco are people that install 30" extreme mud tires and a lift kit and expect the system to work just as good...obviously thats never gonna happen, thats not what the system was designed for..
Lloyd Nielsen Honda does not make or can’t make a 2 person ATV due to laws that expire soon. Honda would last in my list to buy for so many reasons starting with horrible transmissions and weak engines
the only thing can answer actually getting is scared because all the power they have and you still see people modifying them with nitrous and stuff cuz they don't have enough power so either way you cut it you don't have enough power
Jayden Sikes I'll put mine up against anything you have. and let's see any lack in power. BTW. can-am is the leading producer of the most powerful cc to cc. keep buying your junk.
Can-Am sucks when you start to push it in the mud no matter what you do to it belt slips too much The cover floods way too much and did I mention they use the same exact rear differential and gearing for everyone except the 1000 and the 6x6. the rear differential break so much it costs more replaced then the bike is worth after like 3 years of replacing them and they are only three wheel Drive their front differential just sucks no matter what
in the big boar cost too much I'm not going to pay 16 grand for XMR with only a 25% gear reduction same computer and everything as the stock one the only thing it has is of a radiator relocator tires winch it's the same exact thing just with a couple more parts than on it for another 3 Grand
Can am outlander 650 is a piece of junk. Electrical issues ever since it was off warranty with only 300 miles on it, ignition switch failed, headlights don't work, 4wd only engages when it feels like it and than won't disengage. This quad has never been on mud rally, lt is driven primarily by my 60 yr old wife puttering around the farm. Hate to say it but only a few days after buying it l wish l had stayed with Honda. Unless you love frustration do not buy a Can Am.
