Hisense U8G/U88G purchase link (Affiliated): geni.us/HQA1QK
I suggest you read the entire description; however, the brief synopsis is...
Resolution in 4K 120Hz is fully restored, ALLM works, FALD works, but VRR does not. FALD is disabled by design when VRR is active, and the fact that FALD is working when all VRR options are enabled just further shows that its functionality has been killed in this beta patch.
So, the Hisense U8G/U88G has been on the market for a while now and has been said to be the best TV in its pricing category from both critics and end-users alike; however, tones are starting to change slightly at the end of 2021 and into early 2022. You see, even though they are all still scarce, more and more end-users have purchased newer gaming systems such as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as newer graphics cards that offer full 4K/120Hz support.
This is where we start to see and hear of some issues...
As users are attempting to flex the muscle of their new video output devices, they are all met with the same issue... Soft 4K in 120Hz. You see, there is a well-known issue with the Hisense U8G, U88G, U7G, U78G, and the U9DG, where the vertical resolution lines are... Blurry... For the lack of better words, in 4K at 120hz. Some have even gone as far as to say that the TV is actually displaying 3820 x 1080, even though the system read-out shows it should be displaying 3840 x 2160.
Now, Hisense is well aware of this issue and has been working very hard to try and fix it. So, why isn't it fixed yet? My guess would be that darn virus that starts with a "C". No, it hasn't infected the TV; however, what it has done is disrupted offers and R&D centers that would otherwise be working on both innovations and corrections to their current lineups. Furthermore, for those engineering the corrections, it's then hard to test those corrections in-house... When everyone is in turn in THEIR OWN house, and not in an office.
We tested a previous update that was said to correct a variety of concerns, including those regards the resolution issues; however, it appears to be more destructive than beneficial. So, I reported my findings and rolled the TV back. In that video ( • Does Beta L1210 Fix Th... ), I talked about everything it broke, so feel free to go back and watch it to learn more.
Fast forward a couple months and we now have update M0127, which was said again to fix everything wrong with the panel. After testing both my Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and an RTX 3060, I can say that things are MUCH better; however, nowhere near close to ready. These findings have been reported back to Hisense and I will try my best to keep you all updated when/if I hear anything further in regards to updates, patches, fixes, or workarounds.

I don't know about the M0217 update, but I have the M0210 firmware update, and it fixed all of my issues. The set isn't as bright as it was, which leads me to believe that the EOTF was fixed. No issues with motion anymore. And the pic still looks great with a slight adjustment to the backlighting and contrast. Great update.

I messed up the labeling of the Beta, as it’s actually the M0127 (I believe when it starts with a 1 it indicates it’s a beta). After a lot of user feedback, I too think the EOTF has been corrected as well.

This is a great TV in so many ways, it outclasses in many TVs in it's price range. 4k 120 HDR motion is where I noticed the most issues. A good movie to test is Kong vs. Godzilla. A lot of dark scenes that unfortunately expose the motion blur. Messing with settings on your 4k device(PS5 for me) and TV can really raise the dark levels in this mode, but unfortunately it doesn't resolve the picture. If this is a deal breaker like it was for me, you may want to consider trading up in price with a different brand.
@qwazyd0gg

I can live with its faults given it’s price, but mostly because I can’t justify almost $3000CAD for an OLED of the same size compared to $1500CAD for this in the same size profile.

Vrr must be turned on/off in both TV and game consoles. That would fix the grayed out options. Also, local dimming would also open up just switch the TV profile to a different HDR preset. It's a small compromise, but at least you get to have your cake and eat it too

I had the same issue and currently running the M0217 beta on the 55" . I haven't tried PS5 yet but had that issue with XSX and finally fixed it with TV Freesync option (works with local dimming now in beta) and auto low latency off on 4K 120HZ. The blur is not as bad in game mode as before but still not in a usable state for my liking.
@qwazyd0gg
@qwazyd0gg 2 года назад
I don’t know what I did to correct mine; however, after an evening of messing with it and frequently power cycling stuff I too have HDMI 2.1 base level VRR working from the console with Freesync off on the TV to reinstate Local Dimming while gaming. For blur, some have reported EOTF enhancements which improved motion; however, I don’t feel like I can see a difference.
@Lord_Kaibatsu
@Lord_Kaibatsu 2 года назад
@@qwazyd0gg See that's the crazy thing with mine. I have freesync on through the tv and though it turned local dimming back to off when activated, it didn't disable it. I just switched it back to high and it worked with tv freesync on. TV enabled freesync with auto low latency off through Xbox fixed my blur issues.
@qwazyd0gg
@qwazyd0gg 2 года назад
Strange that ALLM introduced more blur, as speed in refresh should in turn improve motion vs decrease it. Based on some logs that I received, Local Dimming was/is disabled by design when using Freesync, so I’m wondering if triggering ALLM off also turns off Freesync (Even though it shows as enabled) and the VRR you’re seeing is like mine (HDMI level VRR). Either way it’s a great step forward. Once I fixed mine I tried Forza and it looked like an entirely different game. I had been playing it since launch in “3840x1440” based on the vertical resolution errors on launch software, and with Local Dimming off. Now in full 4K 120Hz with Local Dimming, it’s insanely sharp and the brightness of the horizons and car reflections is simply mind boggling considering it’s running on a console that retails for less than half the cost of a GPU (3x to 4x cheaper than Scalper price).

The issue with these MFG's is that they promise and advertise these features, and people buy these TV's, and they find out they have been sold broken promises. Hisense is more affordable so it's more forgivable but if you paid 3k for a TV, it angers the consumer. There needs to be consequences for these MFG's to stimulate good Consumer Relations and competition. If Hisense wants to be competing with LG, they need to bring a TV to market that has all these major items fixed. I understand needing minor Firmware updates for unforeseen items. LG seems to be the only company that has it right, right now for gamer's. I like Hisense and am rooting for them in the 2022 TV's that are coming out. And I do hope they fix the U8G. Good video...

Have you noticed high latency (input lag) in HDR 4K 120 with High local dimming? Oddly enough, with Freesync on, I lose all control of Local Dimming via my Apple TV with Freesync on, even though the Apple TV has no VRR functionality. Local Dimming works via SDR and DV, just not in standard HDR10 without turning Freesync off. When this happened, I went back to my Xbox input and VRR worked for 1 frame, then stopped again and Local Dimming control came back for everything. Some strange things are happening, but maybe that speaks towards possible process 🤷‍♂️ And yes, I tried manually turning off Local Dimming and VRR still failed on the Series X and RTX 3060. They're next line up the U8H is looking promising, but we will have to see it first, cause on paper everything looks incredible, but after the experience I had with the U88GQ, I won't be that hyped about a new Hisense product.

When i enable enhanced it still doesnt use 120hz i am so confused and on my ps5 its says 3840 x 2160 - 60 Hz and what hdmi is better
@qwazyd0gg
@qwazyd0gg 2 года назад
Hdmi 3 and 4 are the only 120hz 4K ports. You need to enable enhance, but the. Also, you need to play a 120hz supported game (try Rocketleague) and set the individual game to 120hz as they default to 60hz. The ps5 dashboard is 60hz only also.

How do you uninstall the beta firmware and go back to the official one?

You need the original OS file, and you load it just like the beta update.

@@qwazyd0gg Do you know where to find a copy of the current OS file? I'm highly considering using the new beta and need to have the original os just in case. USA U8G to be exact.

Contact their technical support team or Hisense US social accounts. They usually just want your serial number for the proper file and send it via Dropbox.

Actually, in a surprised turn of events and after messing with it for hours after this video… I got it working! Originally, I noticed that Local Dimming was disabled in standard HDR on my Apple TV, and only functioned when Freesync was disabled. I tried the Xbox and VRR still wasn’t working, but after tinkering with calibration settings for the evening, along with power cycling and sometimes even random button pressing… VRR is now working in 4K HDR WITH Local Dimming while Freesync is off. This is thanks to HDMI 2.1 basic level VRR, and I’m not sure what sequence fixed it, but at least it’s working.

Does this beta fix any of the stutter issues when streaming tv/cable television?

Some beta users have reported better EOTF performance for smoother motion. I personally haven’t noticed it get any better or worse since installing the beta.

So 4k 120 works without VRR, and 4k 60 works with VRR. Everyone is going to feel differently but I do not notice a huge difference in 120 and 60 so Ill take the VRR if im forced to choose. Still irritated with Hisense, how do you not test TVs for these basic things before release...I don't work for them and I noticed in a day. Obviously this is a rhetorical question as they released it fully aware of these issues, atleast they are trying to do something about it now which is good. I really hope they fix it though, thanks for the great breakdown as always much appreciated.

I feel for them to a degree, as I’m sure it’s tough to have a TV made overseas, then put a North American OS on it in hopes that everything still functions, then be unable to test (Speculations only) due to Covid and the loss of fully fledged R&D centres filled with everything they need to answer questions and create/work on features. The C1 is amazing, but with LGs background with leading PC monitors, they’ve had a lot of time to hone in on how things need to work. Same with Sony to a degree. They’ve suffered a ton of issues; however, have no other divisions of screen tech to really work and learn from. Things seem to be crawling forward, albeit at a snails pace most of the time. It’s unfortunate that people bought these TVs under the impression that everything was working flawlessly, but they’ve at-least done more for their community than others suffering the same issues or worse. I just hope these issues don’t repeat themselves on future releases, and that these features are tested at a hardware level from the start. If you’ve followed the AVR community, we saw the exact same thing with HDMI 2.1 features not working for years, with the end result being fully hardware related. We’re sold TVs that should work but don’t, and it seems manufactures are sold parts from vendors that also should work, but in the end don’t :(

@@qwazyd0gg Oh I know its never so black and white and I am sure there are a lot of good people working really hard to make these things work. I will say that a company this big has plenty of resources to test these TVs regardless of circumstance and/or location before hitting production. Now, that's not to say that a bunch of engineers and project managers didn't throw all the red flags up and the VP's decided to ignore them to get the TV out on time. Unfortunately, while I empathize with the employees Hisense heavily promoted broken features that would have deterred people if they were aware beforehand. How about if I sent Hisense ten 100 dollar bills and then after I got the TV said ya one of them is fake sorry my bad, how would that turn out...100% of the cash for 100% of the product. If other TV manufacturers do this they deserve the exact same criticism as well. With all that said the U8G is still a fantastic TV for the price and I have enjoyed it.
