Since the Church is love (not in the commercial sense that is used generally, but in its deep, spiritual, existential sense), making a decision that helps a soul towards salvation does not mean changing the Church. The two conditions that allow "oekonomia" are: love and wisdom.

No, the Church saw it fit, early on in the history of the Church, to require that bishops be unmarried to better fulfill their duties as shepherds of Christ’s flock.

What if a bishop requires people to forgo a secular background check *before* ministering to children (Sunday school) and not deferring to the discretion of the priest/confessor? Does this undermine the sacrament of confession?

That just sounds like a generally good idea to help keep out diddlers. If you're outright convicted of having abused children, you DEFINITELY shouldn't be around them.

No because it's information that is available to authorities who need it to protect their flock from those who do them harm. It's fine and absolutely should be done. I wouldn't want my kids taught in Sunday school by someone who wasn't vetted first. If one has a conviction of such and doesn't want the higher ups of the Parish to know, stay away from anything to do with kids. Please.

@@ethanb2554 Well if the law knows about it, as it's on a background check, and can be obtained for vetting purposes, or one is on a watch list, then it's public knowledge. It doesn't matter then if it's been confessed as it's known secularly and can be obtained without the Confessor saying anything; the priest can't talk about the confession or if it was confessed to him however but a secular background check can be used. It's like if, for example, I stole thousands of dollars and was arrested and convicted for it. I also had to confess it for absolution. But, it's public knowledge that I did this as it's now on my background check so it would in the Parish's best interest not to accept me to be the Parish council treasurer because of this. It isn't a break of confession, as it's known.

@@LadyMaria you're missing what my concern is. Why is a priest's vouching for good enough for someone to take the body/blood of Christ but not to minister to children.
