I was working on an 8 track player and the belt did the same thing. Turn into this tar like resin. Must of been stored in a attic or garage for decades.

The fluff was not the problem here. There was no bottom loop in the film causing the take up reel to pull on the film in the gate. And talking about it while it keeps on pulling like that and just keep it running did hurt a little bit. Alan is a wonderful guy! Great job otherwise repairing it for him

No, you simply hadn’t laced up the film correctly. There are marks on the housing that indicate the size of the loops, didn’t you see them? And never take anything metal to the film guiding parts. The film canal should be cleaned with a round brush. While you may be a decent repairer you are not at home with FILM. Greetings from a professional projectionist and film equipment serviceman!
