As you mentioned these are definitely designed to be a wear all day trouser, rather than an overtrouser. Simond do an overtrouser with full length zips for around £100 which is probably more what you're after.

I have used these for years, for climbing and walking in winter in Scotland where I live. They work well, and are fully waterproof, I've had no problems with leaky zips. They are all day trousers though, either on their own, as they are reasonably warm or with thermal tights. As you say they are way too tight to use as overtrousers but they are not sold as such.

Exactly great trousers for winter pursuits, seems a tad unfair to review them as waterproof overtrousers.

Definitely more a pair of mountaineering trousers worn all day from car to car, rather than waterproof overtrousers!

Brilliant, no waffle review and answered certainly the questions that I had on these. As I'll be using my next pair for both Winter Climbing and a bit of Skiing, I think your review has been super valuable in helping me make a decision to spend more and get something more versatile - cheers man! Great Vids - thanks for taking the time to bring them to us.

I have a lot be of their down jackets, it’s lasted me three years so far and it’s excellent. Super warm.

They do plenty of good stuff for sure, and I think these aren't bad, they're just not particularly what I wanted them to be.

For something that I keep in my pack for unexpected rain, Ive switched to a rain skirt. Much more breathable, easy to get on and off, completely waterproof, and takes up no room in your pack. I wear them combined with alpine gaiters to protect my lower leg and keep water out of my boots. They don't totally replace waterproof pants. There are still scenarios where I bring a proper pair. But they are great for those outings where your not expecting rain, or for alpine/winter stuff where you are starting in above freezing temps, but getting up to snowline quickly, and don't need rain protection for long.

Great topic. I live in the Lake District and like you, have had every brand going and have yet to find any that don’t leak (even my stupidity expensive Acr’teryx ) and the worst area is normally around where your over jacket meets the trousers! Our quest continues .

Noticed your boots. I’m on my third pair. First thing to go each time have been the laces. Yours too 🤣. Other than that really like them, especially for grip on wet rock. Thanks Dylan, Llanrwst.

Love the boots but the laces are crap aren’t they!

I've always gone for cheap (with full length zips) when it comes to over trousers, as they spend 95% of their life scrunched up at the bottom of my pack. Did have Berghaus deluge for 7 years or so, and now got a similar pair of ME ones which do the job.

I still use them, price matched for very cheap at go outdoors, cut the liner out and they pack small.

Would love a review / opinion video of waterproof trousers. I've been after a new pair for a long time. I've been stretching the use of my old ones for a long time now because they are bombproof, super waterproof and super breathable, but they are no longer made. They are however ripped to shreds by a few too many crampon snags!! I've been after a coloured pair purely from a safety point of view should I ever need to call for help. Would love to hear your experience with what trousers actually do the job for you 👍

Perfect timing to be watching this review. In need of a decent pair of waterproof trousers and kept looking at the Crux Torq trousers. Looked in Betws cotswolds thinking I could use my local postcode discount but there wasn’t much in there in my size! Any recommendations on a bomber pair?
@JBMountainSkills
@JBMountainSkills 2 года назад
Personally would avoid the Crux ones, I have a pair, they're eVent, or at least mine were, and not very waterproof. My best ones are Arcteryx, mega, but... flipping pricey.

Brand mountaineering trousers are totally overpriced. 650 GBP/EUR for some Mammut waterproof trousers is absolutely laughable. Simond's kit is reasonably priced and that's why I buy it

I just had a delivery of a few items from Decathlon today as it goes. I reckon the big brand equivalent would have been £840, Simond stuff cost me £250

These aren't overtrousers, they're not designed to be put on over boots. These are for skiing and ice climbing, hence the name, and the reinforcement to protect against ice screws hanging on your harness. I normally wear them with nothing underneath, or leggings for when it's really cold. These trousers aren't even really waterproof, they're more of a softshell.
@JBMountainSkills

The headline on the Decathlon page is: “Men’s mountaineering waterproof trousers…” Regardless of what they’re intended for, they are being bought as over trousers. I do talk about this in the video.

I just couldn't own a pair that isn't full zip. I don't tend to wear then until I really need them. Who wants to have to take off muddy boots in the rain to get them on.....or take crampons off while standing on a ice?

Hi Jez, loving the videos. This is a totally unrelated question, but I was wondering if you could give some insight on taking in slack quickly while lead belaying. The problem occurs when I have payed out a load of slack for the leader to clip, but they are struggling to get the clip and they either shout take or need some time to readjust before attempting the clip again. At this point the atc device is hanging down due to the slack and the standard "v to the knee" technique becomes cumbersome and time consuming to do safely (taking a few step back helps but doesn't fully solve the problem). Here is a video from a guy explaining the problem and his method of taking in quickly which I have been experimenting with. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H63pxyXHP50.html&ab_channel=J.Adams Do you have any tips for dealing with this situation? Cheers!
@thecma3
@thecma3 2 года назад
I usually hold the climber stand up high with my non-brake hand while the leader is clipping. When the time comes to take in slack, that hand is already positioned to yank down while I take with the brake hand.

Very poor review these are winter mountaineering trousers not waterproof overtrousers, also very lazy review wearing them over jeans!
@JBMountainSkills
@JBMountainSkills 2 года назад
But loads of people buy them as such, hence my review and do say as such in the review too. Who cares what I’m wearing under them?!?! It’s five mins from my house, what difference would it have made wearing something “technical”? Lazy review? I’ve worn them many days over Snowdonia in all sorts of weather so that’s just nonsense.
