Can Christians Lose Their Salvation?

Whether they call it "eternal security," "perseverance of the saints," or "once saved, always saved," many Protestants believe that once a person enters into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, that they can never lose their salvation. And there are Bible verses that DO seem to say that... if you read them a certain way. But if this is what the Bible really teaches, why didn't the early Christians seem to know about this teaching? And why do so many Christians today read the Bible as denying eternal security?

For years I thought I was “reformed”, last summer that was challenged and my view of myself crumbled in a second. But I’m grateful for that because it set me on the path to investigate Protestantism and Catholicism. The more I learn and the more I realize I already hold more Catholic beliefs and many differences I don’t find difficult to accept. I continue to learn that the Holy Spirit will guide me

I'm a new Catholic (confirmed at 2023 Easter Vigil) having come from a lifetime (50+ years) of believing what John Piper, and others like him, preach. I'd like to suggest that the verbal phrase "to lose one's salvation" is a poor way to describe the context of no longer having a relationship with Christ. Salvation, I think, is not like your car keys that you misplace in a drawer, or a smartphone that you set down and then someone snatched away from you. I think Joe did a very good job of demarcating external threats to our eternal destiny from internal ones. Asking, "Can you lose your salvation?" for many Protestants, implies the necessity to be constantly on alert for external threats that may snatch it away, when it seems very clear that the only threat is in the mirror. Perhaps it would be better to discuss the topic using phrasing such as, "to reject one's salvation" or "to sin one's way out of salvation."

Or maybe "to leave salvation?"
@wjtruax
@wjtruax 6 месяцев назад
@@michaelbeauchamp22 as I wrestled with this in coming out of Calvinism, I began to look at it as Christ the perfect husband and a bride, such as in the book of Hosea. Christ guarantees that he will never divorce his bride, but the bride is free to walk away. She is an absolute fool to do so, but Christ will never maintain the relationship by force.
@paularnold3745

I think the reason we use phrases like "lose salvation" is because those that are on the "road to damnation" are often referred to as being "lost". This is influenced by scriptures like Luke 15 : 24 - "Because this, my son, was dead, and he is alive; he was lost, and now he is found." But for sure you are right that salvation cannot be accidentally lost like losing our car keys. On the other hand, we do not lose our car keys unless we are careless with them. Likewise, we must pay active attention to our sanctification, or we might "back slide" unto the death of our soul. Sin is not only by commission, but omission also. Peace of Christ be with you Brother!

The fact that so many popular Protestants articulate and argue for this, despite knowing the Bible very well, continues to blow my mind. I listened to a bestselling author and pastor of a large church deliver a sermon on this topic citing Colossians 1:21-22 as proof: “and you who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through his death to present you holy, and without blemish, irreproachable before him,” He said, “see you are irreproachable before God the Father because of the sacrifice of Christ, nothing you have done can cause you to be given blame before God”. Y’all. The literal next line after irreproachable before him is “PROVIDED you persevere in the faith, firmly grounded, stable, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard”. I find that it actually magnifies Gods grace, in my view. The God who loved us, left the 99 to find the 1 (Matthew 18:12-13), who will let not height nor depth, angels nor demons, nor anything else in all creation separate us from the love that is in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37-39), will hold me fast until the end. Of course, that comes with obligation for good works out of an outpouring of my gratitude towards him, but just as those good works did not contribute to my salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9) neither can my evil deeds cause me to be snatched out of Jesus’ hand (John 10:28-28). I find it beautiful, but I can see why some would think it cheap, even though I disagree. God bless

I have a family member who points to John 10:28 as evidence for once saved always saved. One thing I'd like to point out is that in verse 27, Jesus describes the kind of people who have the security he is talking about. It's those who hear Jesus' voice and FOLLOW him. I think one reason protestants who hold this view find it hard to consider otherwise is that they have no distinction between mortal and venial sin. They think losing one's salvation is untenable because we all sin all the time, so we'd always be unsure and live in a virtual certainty that we are not saved because we sin so much. But even when I was a protestant, I understood that there is a difference between struggling with things, and willfully turning my heart from God to indulge in sin.

We are all sinners until we get a glorified body, we have bad blood, only one was perfect ( Jesus Christ God manifested in the flesh that died and shed his blood for us. Something to think about! The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life. So let’s look at our lives, no one can remember all their sins since the time of accountability. Did you know the word “ Repentance means turn towards Christ, and obviously from sin and grow in his words. So to “ believe is to “ have faith In Jesus then your “ saved” Romans 7:24 ( Paul writes I do the things in my body that I don’t want to do, but I do them anyways O’Wretched man that I am. ) Paul is in heaven! To be spiritual circumcised, is to be redeemed and reborn, your soul is cut away from your sinful nature. Catholics never know if their going to heaven, because every time they sin, their running to a priest to have it annulled. I heard a wise man say if God would judge me for my thoughts in the past twenty four hours, he would send me to hell quicker then a bullet, and then he smiled and said thank God I am redeemed by the blood of Jesus.( he is saved) Blessings!

Great topic! I never believed in eternal security during the 49 years that I was a Protestant, even though I started out in the Baptist tradition. Unlike Calvinists, I believe in human free will. In fact, the person who led me to Christ when I was 11 years old is now an atheist. He even publicly renounced his baptism, and regularly mocks believers on social media. Why? He wanted to live for his pleasures. I pray often for him to return to the Lord. I do, however, also believe in the faithfulness of God, as you discussed. I'm glad you brought up Philippians 1:6, as this is a promise that we can stand on in our prayers for sanctification. Also, St. Paul says, "...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling...", but followed with a promise..."for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure." (Philippians 2:12b - 13) We should have holy fear, but we should not be so terrorized that we aren't sure of our salvation. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and He is always herding us back onto the narrow path. Likewise, God the Father does not leave us orphans and is always working in us and empowering us to live holy lives. His grace, freely given, is transformational through the power of the Holy Spirit! However, it is up to us to cooperate with His amazing grace, and to always be willing to go to that next level in our relationship with Him. The Church helps us with that, too.

If Satan was to instigate a doctine that kept people away from salvation, all he'd have to do would be to create a belief where people thought that all they needed to do was to believe in Christ as the Saviour (just as Satan himself believes and knows to be the case) and teach that nothing else was required of them. And that all Christ's many teachings about what else is required for salvation are simply unrequired. It seems that through Calvin and the Reformation, that's exactly what was achieved.

Coming from a fundamentalist Baptist background, I devoured his teachings when I was younger teen seeking a deeper understanding of my faith that baptist fundamentalism could not give me. Have you ever considered doing an episode engaging his core doctrine of "Christian Hedonism" as expressed in his book "Desiring God" and whether or not it is compatible with Catholicism? If so, I think that would be a great help to many who eagerly adopted his theology but later almost burned out because they could not conjure up the emotional experiences required of "Christian hedonists."

Saved to adoption happens once but saved to a covenantal relationship is continual. We can become prodigal sons and not return or temporarily leave the Father. In order to receive final salvation (eternal life) we must continue in the faith. I think that several terms such as "saved" "eternal life" "faith", ect need to be defined when having these theological conversations. Tbh Piper’s video is low hanging fruit for Joe. His (and mine if I’m honest) view is based on the systematic view of Calvinist soteriology, which piper doesn’t explain and seems to assume his viewership to understand and believe already. I’d explain it like this, just as good works do not contribute to our salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9) neither can evil deeds remove our salvation. Yes, we are called to persevere, but those who are called WILL persevere. Those who don’t merely show that they were not born again in the first place. You are a new creation in Christ when you are saved, the old has passed away (from the context and the phrase passed away itself we can reasonably assume the old will not return). God bless!

But as for the parable, the prodigal Son was dead because he didn't know the father and instead took the riches and left to indulge himself. But him coming back means he's alive, not again but for the first time, because he know understands his place and the love of his father. He experienced the kind of love where he would never leave again. But check out the older brother, is he alive? No, he's as dead as his brother in a different form and is still dead. He was jealous of his brother because his brother got to do all those worldly things and this his father sacrificed a goat for him but not the older brother for obeying. He didn't know the father's heart at all. These are supposed to represent the Pharisees and the prodigal son represent the societal low-lifes. Paul is basically saying, God loves us so much and has raised us to eternal life in Christ that who can separate us? There's no power stronger than God. But you're saying "yes there is there is one person that can separate themselves, that has that much power over God, and that person is yourself".

This meant the crowd who went to Jesus did not go to Jesus because the Father drew them but it was their hungry stomachs. They proved Jesus right when they left Him. Funny thing about free will is that the bible says our will is not free but a slave to sin. Only God can break the chains of sin and allow us to make choices. Free will always reacts to what people desire but can people will their own desires to change? That's very hard, if not impossible. Can a gay man will themselves to be straight? No he can't and his will is not free. He can't help but to desire men but with God, he can abstain from it.

I think some of the problem is a misunderstanding of the Predestination of the Elect. From God's eternal perspective, He causes salvation and knows eternally who will be saved (see Romans 8 : 28-30, Ephesians 1 : 5-14 and CCC 600, 1039). But just because God causes our salvation does not negate that God works the salvation in us through the free will He gave to us. We can accept His invitation or not, and if we accept the invitation we can later reject it and then accept it again. God is the ultimate causes of our accepting the invitation and our final perseverance, but certainly is not the cause of anyone's rejection of the invitation or trashing of the invitation after initially accepting it. Regarding being separated from the love of God (Romans 8 : 31-39), that has nothing to do with salvation because even those who are lost are still loved by God. God even loves Satan because He loves all His creatures.

15:30 You're right that Piper's argument here is faulty. I agree with you. To speak for Calvinists, we define the "CALL" as God drawing the people to Jesus in John 6:44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me DRAWS them, and I will raise them up at the last day." which is tied to John 14:6 "Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Jesus will raise those that the father DRAWS to him on the last day (6:44) so that they can come to the father through Jesus (14:6). The father draws them to Christ or "calls" them to Christ. For this type of call, we technically call it "effectual call" because it's effective 100% in them being raised by Christ on the last day (meaning salvation). That word in the Greek is ἑλκύσῃ, which means to pull or persuade. It's not your mom calling you for dinner while you're playing a game and you say coming but continues play and can decide to miss dinner and ignore the call. For Calvinists, if Jesus calls you for dinner, you will go to dinner, not by mind control but maybe the internet drops your connection and now you can't continue. There is a strong sense of an external force pulling you towards Christ, however it may manifest in real life, though not mind control. Think of mice in a maze with one one solution and delicious food at the end. The mice has it's own free will to make decision to turn left or right but the draw of the food combined with dead ends allows the mic to get to the food in the end. Who designed the maze? God. Also, for a good debate/dialogue, it's good to be on the same page with vocab like you said. Otherwise, people will use the same words but talk over each other because they mean different things. That's why Catholics find Protestant theology right on the money sometimes and gets weirded out by conclusions they make and vise versa.

Your bonus evidence if I’m understanding correctly is as a Catholic a Protestant holds me in error and would believe I am not saved. Therefore the theory of once saved always saved by a Protestant is null and void? Is this accurate?

What does it mean “from of old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction has not been asleep?” This sounds like he’s saying there was intent on their part to cause destruction/that this has inherently been in their hearts. That would seem to me to imply that they were not genuine in their faith to begin with. I’m sure there is a logically explanation to this, hoping to get an answer.

21:22 who can separate us from the love of God ? And you think you can? 1 Cor 1:7-9 who sustains you to the end you or God . Are you stronger than God? Will you pry God's grip apart and escape His grasp? Please show us where we can be unborn? please show us where the Holy Spirit places His seal upon us and then later removes it? OSAS refers only to your born again spirit not your flesh .

Do RC believe that Ananais and Saphirra lost the Holy Spirit?

They rejected the Holy Spirit by lying to God. Peace of Christ be with you.

@@paularnold3745 when we sin ,whatever sin we commit ultimately we are sinning against God. King David makes that clear in the Psalms. So every time we lie you we are lieing to God. Are we too then rejecting the Holy Spirit? God Bless

The devil will accuse you of your sin and will try to make you despair. Don’t worry. This is why Jesus established His Church and the sacrament of Penance- forgiveness of sins. Go to Confession and receive His Mercy. This life is a continual trial and Jesus promised that the soul who persists to the end will be saved. Keep getting up after a slip or a fall. St Joseph is a great source of strength, he has been for me.

I believe in the security of the believer as long as he continues to live a life of faith, but the person I am interested about is the believer who becomes an unbeliever, will he be saved? I am not Catholic, it is just plain to see from studying the bible, that a Christian can lose their salvation. In Gal 3:5 it says that you can fall from grace, I don't believe a person who has fallen from grace will be saved. The bible says be faithful until death......faith is not a one time thing, it is a way of life

@@MasterKeyMagic Sorry, got my scripture wrong, it is Gal 5:4 " You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law, you have fallen away from grace".

Ephesians 1: 1-23. Verse 13-14 “ and you were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation. Having believed, YOU WERE MARKED IN HIM WITH A SEAL, THE PROMISED HOLY SPIRIT, WHO IS A DEPOSIT GUARANTEEING OUR INHERITANCE UNTIL THE REDEMPTION OF THOSE WHO ARE GOD’S POSSESSION - TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY. ‘ No you cannot lose your Salvation. If you belong to God through faith in Jesus Christ you are sealed by the Holy Spirit which is a deposit and a GUARNTEE you will be glorified and be in Heaven with Christ. God does not break His promise. God keeps us. And do NOT introduce spurious ideas of a saved person cutting themselves off from God. That is an argument to confuse people and cause uncertainty and doubt and make them slaves to Rome’s teachings and demands and lies. K
