An explanation of the can crush experiment. The role of atmospheric pressure as well as the liquid to gas phase change of water are explored.
The can crush experiment can be confusing at first. This video clearly explains how atmospheric pressure crushes the can.

A quick question Dr.B what would happen if the can was not inversed as in The can was not flipped upside down? This is for a homework question, but i can't seem to find anything explaining that specific question which is weird!

In case it was not inverted the steam and water remains inside applying some pressure to balance the outer pressure also some air from outside enters the can too but when we immediately invert it there is no air , water and steam creating a vacuum. Allowing outside pressure to crush the can

My homework requires me to discuss temp, pressure and volume. I've figured out the temp and pressure part but don't know how to talk about the volume. Could ya help me with this?
@kryptoknight.
@kryptoknight. 8 месяцев назад
Volume is the amount of space in a 3D object, in this case, the can. When the can gets squished, it gets smaller. The amount of its space decreases.

Silly question but what would happen if someone stamped on a can still full of fizzy drink?
@wbreslyn

You'd have to stamp very hard for anything to happen. Probably soda would go everywhere!

but why isn't some water just being sucked into can, instead of it imploding?
@wbreslyn
@wbreslyn Год назад
Good question! There is water that is sucked into the can but the crushing happens very quickly. I suppose there isn't much volume left in the can so it may be that the volume of the can that is left is full of water. You ask a good question. I'll take a look next time I do this.
