The so-called "economic miracle" that transformed Singapore into a prosperous city-state saw most of its arable land redeveloped. With less than one per cent left to grow crops, the government hopes advanced urban farming and the development of alternative protein technology will help produce 30 per cent of the island's nutritional needs by 2030.

Actually, Singapore doesn't lack the space for farming, it's not about growing, it's about growing efficiently, multitude of new generation housing flat's rooftop could be turned into a huge farming complex in the future.

Rooftop gardens have the added benefits of enhancing building insulation, reducing energy requirements & emissions, and reducing the urban heat island effect. They can also contribute to employee well-being & a way to destress. Every city building should have a green roof. There are crops that prefer to grow in the shade or even in the dark. Plants that love the sunlight should br grown on rooftops. Low energy tech, such as solar tunnels, can be used to bring the sun indoors - the less energy required the better. Copenhagen has developed floating farms - it's a dairy farm but I'd prefer floating veggie farms instead...

I wish more City’s and towns would do either rooftop gardens or solar roof’s because the benefits. It would cut costs expenses exponentially!

Perhaps Singapore can build like like an overhead area above roads where food can be grown. Roads can be a waste of space

How does FT determine when subtitles are required? I don't think I've seen subtitles used on any other videos featuring English speakers (even with accents - and who decides which is the right accent?).

I think Singapore can grow crops above their many hawker centres....can sell fresh produce directly to the hawkers at good price

Do you subtitle every non British English speaker usually? Found that a tad weird.

Was gonna say their English was perfectly understandable to any native speaker. To the degree they had an accent, so did the British narrator from my American English perspective, so it's weird that he didn't get subtitles.

I don't see that indoor farming is more cost intensive. Artificial milk is cheaper than traditional milk. Mushrooms cheaper than meat (and doesn't need light). On demand agricultural production reduces waste & the whole distribution chain. Even in stores there is already salad that is on the same price level than its field grown brother. Not to mention that traditional agriculture is highly subsidized all over the world. Oh and i forgot that indoor is all biological, no need for chemical pesticides & it consumes way less water. Agricultural land that is no longer needed can be turned back into forests.

The world is spoilt by cheap food, subsidised by cheap fuel and bio-enhanced farming that squeezed more than what we need from our environment. Sooner or later we will need to pay back our due…

innovations will usually overcome these problems. a second (messy) wave of renewables is coming that will further revolutionize energy use (once battery and EV production are scaled up).

Innovation.

It’s way to expensive to grow this way. Either way you are still going to pay more. Just like desalination from the sea for water.

lky had a simple solution to food shortags... MAKE MORE MONEY 2 PAY FOR FOODS...sg is 2 small for farmlands... not even hdb roofs... our neighbors hv. vast land mass.. they grow n sell to sg... like importing oranges n apples...sg don't hv. rice fields or pig farms... or chicken or duck.. all sg has is people who make money to buy the foods

I export vegetables to Singapore on daily basis. What they are doing with artificial lights and car parks are follies. Singapore is in the tropics, instead of utilizing the free abundant sunlight, they choose to use grow lights. They grow on rooftops which is not scalable. What they are doing is good for show but lack substance.

MANY YEARS AGO SOME POLITICIAN MENTIONED ABOUT GROWING OWN CROP AND POULTRY AND IT WAS LAUGH UPON AND SAYING SINGAPORE LAND IS VERY PRECIOUS SHOULD BE USE ON HIGH VALUE ECONOMY. MOVE FORWARD TODAY LOOK LIKE IT MAKE SENSE ( 2 IS ENOUGH ALSO WRONG AFTER 30 YEARS) ONLY WHEN THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE

Stop saying Singapore has natural resource! Singapore's deep waters is the reason for its success from 1819 to 1989. As the country has progressed in developing various tertiary industries, the natural resource are the people of Singapore, local and foreign! I expect more from FT reporting, avoiding sensationalist reporting. Just as Saudi Arabia had leased large tracts of land in Eritrea and Ethiopia for food production, Singapore too can lease land in neighbouring countries to secure food supply. As such, technology is not the only option to grow food. And if someone wishes to counter that tech is the only option for land scarce Singapore, let me remind you that even today, Singapore has 12 golf courses! What land scarcity?!

lmao, singapore. an iland smaller than most cities worrying about food supply. don't worry guys. any neighboring countries could cover your needs easy peasy!! a small lab would hardly enough to cover a country needs. and you call the high-facility lab efficient to grow food?

The entire purpose of this video is to become a little less completely dependent on neighboring countries in case political climates shift out of control. Using your example any bad government (not Singapore!) starting a fight with Malaysia and disrupting their economy or supply chains would have an immediate effect on the cost of living in Singapore due to production in Malaysia dropping in favor of other things (like safety). Trying to develop ways of becoming more self sufficient is important for every country. It will take a loooong time before they can out-compete they neighboring countries in terms of prices, but unless we start developing now it will be too late. Just take a look at the way all wars in the past had an influence on the regions around them.

Spending a hundred times too much to grow food eaten by hardly anybody does not improve food security. The money and effort would be better spent improving trade contracts with neighbors. Humans need rice and wheat, not organic basil and fresh thyme for Michelin-starred restaurants.
