As I've gotten older in life I've noticed something in regards to a lot of the dream things I've wanted over the years but never acquired, (or acquired and later regretted getting), namely the fact that the urge to covet almost always dwarfs the joy of possession, and that many things I once desired or valued, I no longer do.
@Lon1001

"the urge to covet" good term for that feeling, I know it well. Have spent a lot of money in home theatre systems and fancy cameras and realize that it was not money well spent (even though I do get much enjoyment and satisfaction from those toys). I'm typically a saver kind of person, can delay gratification for a long time until I decide to pull the trigger and then I seem to be able to spend swiftly.

As much as I understand the desire to have a nice car, it's crazy to spend that kind of money right out of college when the company will be providing him with a car for free. They probably also pay for the insurance and maybe even the gasoline and maintenance. He should be able to save huge amounts with that setup. Don't destroy all that with a 2nd car that will sit in the garage (or worse, outside) and never get driven. Makes zero sense.
@lagarde2011

Very weird advice from Dave on this one. I have a company car that isn't for personal use -- I can't drive it on weekends, etc. I can, however, stop at the grocery store and elsewhere on my way home from work. I sold my personal car about a year ago when the prices went up and haven't looked back. I rent a car 1-2 days per month at most, which costs about the same as my monthly insurance bill for the old car. I'm in a small city so it's easy for me to walk many places. The savings on gas, repairs, maintenance, etc are tremendous. Plus, I invested the 20k I got from selling the car. Very few downsides here.

I think it's a reasonable purchase if he puts 20-40 percent down and gets a low apr on the car. That way he can keep some emergency savings and have a fun car. However gas, insurance especially, and maintenance will easily wipe that love for the car if it becomes a hassle. I'd hate to see his savings get wiped out by a car. I would've suggested waiting a good year and a half at minimum after he starts his job to stack some more bread and put a down payment on the car. He's in a great Situation. However life always throw that curve ball. What if he get the car and have a car accident and it's his fault. Insurance goes up and car lose its value. If I was him, I would take the opportunity and continue to stay ahead. I would invest that money or used that money to buy a home. He already have a car that can take him point a to b. My two cent. Only time I would buy a toy car when I have x amount already in bank and it doesn't hurt me when it come to savings. 45 k is good starting salary. If I was him, I would wait until I have like 100k save plus the money for car. Something like that
