When I was a kid, I was convinced that Team Rocket ran the Game Corner as a front, and the reason why they went around stealing pokemon was so they could offer them as expensive rewards at the prize counter.

Oh my god. That actually makes a lot of sense. I was thinking that they probably had something akin to puppy mills. Especially for the rarer Pokemon like Dratini. Maybe it's a mix of both? They steal Pokemon and run puppy mills (pokémills?)

I thought that team rocket was using the game cornee to make money, and the pokemon were just incentives to make people spend more money, but since my only irl experiance is aracdes I figured dratini cost like 2000$ in really life money

The game dialog states that team rocket does own the game corner and does sell stolen pokemon there. In the manga they do experiments on them and hurt pokemon. And in the anime several episodes show that they also do breed pokemon.

On the Seismic Toss: ALL fixed damage moves in Gen 1 hit every Pokemon regardless of typing. The same reason Bide hits Ghosts, and Nightshade hits Normal types.

Reemirx, I believe the reason MDB doesn’t do the Pokémon White/Black games is because of the ridiculous amount of rival fights. The one run he did do of Pokémon Black, he did make a point to highlight his dislike of that part specifically.

After watching Detective Pikachu, I've become convinced that pokemon moves get charged with some sort of techno-magic energy of that type. So electric moves aren't really electricity; it's some sort of energy that represents electricity. I imagine a fighting-type move isn't merely wrestling stuff, it gets charged with this weird pokemon energy that allows for special interactions with other pokemon.

So essentially, a run with a Pokemon that has 110 in HP, Defense, and Special Defense, 80 Sp. Atk and 80 Atk (with the Slow Start) and 50 Speed (with the Slow Start). That's not even a challenge. Even if you're not faster than most Pokemon, no opposing Pokemon is going to be putting a dent into an overleveled Regigigas so stalling until Slow Start wears off is way too easy. Even then 80 Atk is enough to one-shot most Pokemon using STAB moves like Strength, Mega Punch or Giga Impact if necessary.

Just a suggestion: When doing gen 1 challenges, Pokemon Yellow has slightly better AI than Red and Blue, so if you want the challenge to be a little more difficult, then do Pokemon Yellow. But, it’s your choice. Great vid too👍

Pokemon Yellow also tends to have better movesets for pokemon, too. Like Scyther actually getting STAB at level 54... in the form of *WING ATTACK* while in R/B, Scyther gets exactly 0 STAB moves.

Yellow's Rival Fights are easier, it's a bit more finicky to change your starter even with the Universal Randomizer. Plus RB sprites are much better because of how derpy they are.

The reason you can throw a ghost is that Seismic Toss uses set damage, and to prevent the move being super effective and doing more damage, in ONLY gen 1 it ignores all type matchups including immunities

There are anti-piracy checks in HG/SS, making the game glitch out every 60 "game events". That's why he doesn't do runs in HG/SS. Also, as you said, it's good, so a challenge would be way too easy. (Maybe Red would be hard, but everything else wouldn't.)

My guess is that since Seismic Toss is like Nightshade and does set health damage based on the user's level, it wasn't programmed like a regular move. The immunity factor only applies to damage dealing moves and Seismic Toss, while being a damage dealing move is probably classified by some value as more of a status move due to the set damage.

I called 3/4 of the Machop's final moveset, where the other one I thought would be Rock Slide (for Flying-types), but Body Slam is better for paralysis and Low Kick does the flinching.

I should have remembered that seismic toss worked on ghosts, I taught it to my Gengar in Gen 1 and used it to sweep Agatha... I was not very good at the games back then.

Its not even that the AI is always bad, in Gen 1 if they have a move that has type advantage (regardless if it does dmg or not) it will use that because it reads that it will be super effective. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Gen 1 is smart, its just a programming thing.

It's theoretical possible (unlike Caterpie, who cannot hit ghosts) but it will most likely end up being impossible. Weedle only gets Poison Sting and Stringshot, no level-up moves, no TMs. So there is no strategy to be used, no trick up your sleeve and I doubt Weedle can bruteforce itself through the game with Poison Sting even on level 100. I don't even want to know what level you need to beat Brock... It would be incredibly boring to watch.

Karate Chop is Normal Type in Gen I. And the first Fighting Move Machop learns is Low Kick at level 20. Meaning you'll have to rely on the 54% crit rate (actually pretty good) to bypass Geodude's Hardens before you run out of PP, and hope you have enough to spare for Onix AND that you don't crit on the turn it uses Bide.

That's an impossible one though, as they only learn 2 moves (only 1 attacking move, which is tackle or poison sting for Weedle). There is no strategy to be made and you will already lose the challenge with Caterpie when going to Lavender Town, as you cannot hit ghosts with it (it learns no TMs either). Bug Bite doesn't exist in Gen 3.

The likes of Blain and Giovani always made me think that being a Gym leader wasn't a sign of being a super strong pokemon trainer. I kind of always thought they were more like Old Folks homes for retired or injured trainers. So they could "Feel useful" in their crippled state. Maybe they took one to many pokeballs to the head.

I doubt it needs that much overleveling. Machop has good Attack and the Abra-line has terrible defense, he will most like 2 shot or even 1 shot them depending on moves available (remember that karate chop is normal type in gen 1 and almost always crits!). The only issue is speed.

HGSS seems to have pretty major problems running on emulators. I think there's a built-in anti-piracy feature that freezes your game near the beginning if it detects its not being played on a DS.
