Me too. I love repurposing furniture. I took a 5-drawer chest, cut off the top 2 drawers, and put legs on the bottom. Put a new top on the 3-drawer section. Ended up with 2 'sort of matching' chests.

You may not have saved any money repairing it yourself however you gained in owning a custom fire grill that you can proudly use in the years to come. Also the repairs you made are better than the original in that the materials you used are of better quality. I wonder how much it would cost to buy one with the upgrade in steel?

I've never understood why a firepit is produced which can only hold twigs and little bits of wood. Now, in fairness, we have an almost total fire ban. We have suffered hugely over recent years with catastrophic wild fires. This might explain tiddly firepits. So many people either live in the foothills or in the grassy plains. One good blast of wind and we're looking at thousands of acres of burn. Your work looks good! Nice job and it will last!

I absolutely agree with you Phil about the throw away society that we have now. I have had 5 arts and craft shops in the past (one at a time) and folk are always amazed at how much it costs in time and materials to hand make things, so therefore how much they are selling for - so they go and buy mass produced stuff instead. Do not know what the answer is, as non of us have much money to go around now? It is so good that you have the facilities to mend your fire pit, and can enjoy it now, thanks to your hard work on it. You are a good man Phil, with a good caring heart. Wish there were more like you in this world of ours. xxx

Yeah, you are being hard on yourself Phil. What you made is far better than buying it in the shops. Using recycled materials is definitely a win as it will last for many years so it’s much better than what you bought. As people have suggested have you thought about having a bench to work on as I’m getting a sore back watching you. I did think about asking you about putting a hole in the bottom on your fire pit too but you set us straight on why not. Now that I know how you will care for it sounds good to me. Thank you. May you please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩

You have just made a comment that gave me a bit of a shock that we are losing the old skills...actually see it a lot and find it quite surprising when folk say they dont know how to do things. It seems the information that used to be in people's brains is now in their phones. Sometimes I'm glad I'm old.

Agree with you on people loosing the abilities to produce and make stuff themselves. The industry also, instead of making durable things that last at minimum 20 years and on average 50, make things that last 1 year and at maximum 5. How many kitchen machines do you need to substitute frequently because the old ones are disintegrating?

You did a lovely job restoring the fire pit. Much better to use your own skills and have the satisfaction of doing the work yourself rather than going out and buying one. Truth is known, the newer one would probably be made with inferior materials and not be put together as well as your old one. Everything just seems to be made cheaper and cheaper these days. Yes, I’m old 😂

You did a great job restoring the fire pit and I think it's a lot better to fix something if you have the ability to so. The earth is filled with enough garbage as it is. I love having a fire pit. The problem is I can't put a cover on it when it's done because it's hot. The next day I forget and it always fills up with water. So I (my husband) drilled a wee hole in it because we know ourselves and it's gross emptying it when it's full of water and ash. But that's just us. I'm looking out the window right now as the rain is coming down and out fire pit sitting on the patio.

IMO, the best fire pit is made from a laundry machine barrel with a chimney on it. The holes allow air to go in to keep the fire hot and the chimney keeps the smoke above head level so you don't get the smoke in your face!
