If your dog has kidney or renal disease you are probably wondering how best to feed your dog. Many people ask me about the best diet for their dog with kidney disease. While every dog is different and may be at a different stage with their kidney disease, the great majority can do well on a raw diet. So let’s look at this in more detail in todays short video- we’ll look at how a raw diet can benefit your dog with kidney disease, modifications that need to be made as the disease progresses and foods to avoid even when on a natural diet so stay tuned to learn more.

Kidney or renal disease refers to any ongoing dysfunction of the kidney or renal system- the word failure - as in kidney or renal failure is used where there is irreparable damage done to the kidneys in what would be end stage disease states. Kidney disease develops when normal kidney function is compromised, leading to a buildup of toxins in the body. Renal failure occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to process toxins, and the body begins to shut down.
It used to be that kidney disease tended to occur in very elderly dogs but more and more these days I am seeing younger and younger dogs with kidney disease. While acute kidney disease can happen due to some type of poisoning, chronic kidney disease (which we are focusing on here today) occurs more as dogs age. Poor diet, stress, chemicals, tap water and dental bacteria are just a few contributing factors to premature kidney problems.
SO what about feeding your dog a raw diet if they have been diagnosed with kidney disease. Your vet will most likely say a big fat NO to this, but the truth is, that it is best to feed your dog a natural diet and this is preferably in its raw state? For most dogs they have been prescribed some type of prescription or processed type diet- these products are not what I would recommend because they restrict available protein and of course are filled with processed ingredients. Most vets will tell you that your dogs must not have a lot of [protein if they have been diagnosed with kidney disease and while this tends to be true in end stages of the disease, in early and middle stages it is still advisable to keep up a good level of quality protein, preferably fresh animal protein. And certainly if you have an older dog suffering from kidney disease we want to maintain good levels of protein generally because this helps maintain their muscle mass and general health too. The other big problems with a kibble based prescription diet is that they are too low in water making your dogs kidney work harder - we want to keep kidney dogs well hydrated and moisture in the food helps this. In addition, there are just too many carbohydrates in these types of foods that can lead to inflammation, gut problems and other issues.
