"I guarantee these will probably work OK" -- the level of surety goes down with every word in that sentence! :D

Beautiful work there with the mobo (I've just watched 5 minutes right now). I love it. Thanks!.

Awesome work as always and nice tip on soldering those PLCC packages. I've never really got on with them but I'll have to try your approach next time!

If you're worried about the metal power switch accidentally shorting on something during testing, tape it's lead to your mat to immobilize it

I soooo wish your close up work was in focus - the "slightly away" bits are in focus, but the close up stuff isn't.....and I really want to see what you are doing as I'm attempting the same things atm! Other than that, thank you for the fantastic video and fix. Oh, and as a point of interest: The silkscreen of the 4k is wrong for two of the audio caps. The two 22uF audio caps need swapping around. They still work the wrong way round, but they don't do anything.

That's awesome. Strange about the Zorro card though.

Another fantastic job. Can I ask, how do you manage to solder on to pads/traces/components that have been affected by battery corrosion?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 месяцев назад
The key is the initial clean up using vinegar, IPA, fibreglass brush - repeat all that a few times. Then use the braid, with solder and flux - rubbing the braid over pads and traces produces a little friction which removes and final surface contamination!

I love it when you release an A4000 video, because I can watch it instead of fixing my own mess of an A4000. 🤣

Wondering why you didnt replace the SIMM sockets with metal clips versions? Are not those plastic clips notorious for breaking and thats a lot of pins to de-solder.
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 месяцев назад
Those plastic clips aren't as notorius as you're led to believe! I've worked on 6 or 7 now and all but one where the sockets were heat damaged - the clips were good. This board has sockets that now are like new - plastic clips perfect. The SIMMs will stay in there, rarely if ever removed, so there's no chance of them breaking. I prefer a board to have as many period correct parts fitted, even if they aren't as good as replacement ones with metal clips!

I've seen people putting ceramic caps when reaping in order to avoid future leaks, isn't that a good idea ?
@GadgetUK164
@GadgetUK164 7 месяцев назад
In my opinion it's not a good idea! Ceramic capacitors do not behave the same way as electrolytics, they also have a different failure mode (short), and are subject to temperature and humidity affecting them as well as piezo electric effect. Might be OK to replace 1 or 2 in a given system - but personally I would just fit electrolytics, or Polymer hybrids.

@@GadgetUK164 Got it, but those caps specs are not critical in most parts as I understand, maybe it's' still ok? And what about tantalum ?
