This series documents my attempt to follow Somerset's longest river from its source, all the way to the sea. In this video it's finally be time to deploy the inflatable boat I'd been lugging around; but how far can I actually paddle it...?

In this British wild camping expedition I attempt to travel from source of Somerset's longest river, all the way to the sea! To make things more difficult I've challenged myself to stick as closely to the river as I possibly can, trying to never leave its banks. Is this possible? I have absolutely no idea. But I'm incredibly curious to find out!

Cows are fine Ed should have just walked through them. I honestly think they were just inquisitive and hoping for some food from the human.

@@thedave7760 No not Angus Cattle, they tend to have this mob mentality that at first was curiosity but then was turned into anxiety like fear having to chase away the intruder due to said fear. @@thedave7760 Angus Are what 85--90 precent of people in South Dakota have, then next is Red Polled also a bit temperamental but more calm, and then Highland is becoming more popular due to how they can ranch these hard parts of land, have about 5 per the heard, then for the beef that they can sell as lean/extra lean easier due to how the coat keeps them warm. The hair from the hides has also been used in some insulation for clothing the way different wool can be too. I then know due to breading the Dairy cattle have a better temperment and had to due to having to be around humans. Same can be said of former dual purpose that are mainly for beef now like the standard Shorthorn another one taking off in South Dakota as part of the other 15--20 percent for beef due to how it has a better temperament then an Angus but not quite that of a dairy only cattle. Most temperamental are the Bison people raise due to how they are still 85% wild but bonus they are almost self reliant.

The worst thing about Ed falling over the barbed wire fence in the last episode is that the camera was already setup in the direction he was going - he'd already climbed over put the camera in place and clambered over the fence again in order to get that shot.
@josephfredbill
@josephfredbill Год назад
The same applies to several shots - eg entering the tunnel. I have asked how he does this. With the tunnel example he could have set up the camera first then gone back to collect it. However he does it he must do each of these kinds of shot twice at least. I have asked in another comment how he does it - it looks believable and natural.

@@1999Goose99 Bullocks in a group are often playful but being such large animals, their idea of play is often not fun to people lol. You could turn this thing into a whole ecological exercise, trying to do it on rivers starting in different environments and traveling through different ecosystems. The River Severn, where you're trying to stay in the channel as you slop through a swamp. Or the Clyde, starting up at the source of the Daer Water and coming down the hills and into Glasgow. Or, even better, the St. Johns River in Florida, where you can enjoy a nice, lazy ride upstream from its source in a swamp. The alligators, snakes and bears actually aren't too big a deal, but a group of drunk, methed-out Florida Men in a speedboat is not something to be trifled with.

You could potentially slim down by leaving your cooking pan etc at home or asking a friend to meet you at certain checkpoints so that you don't have to carry the meals and water. You start out barely making progress, not even seeing where you're going most of the time, and it gets easier and easier, until you can float on the current. only needing to make some decisive adjustments to your direction from time to time. This is something I've been wanting to do, but here in USA there aren't any real short rivers. I live in Oklahoma and the Arkansas River runs through my town, but it starts WAY up in Colorado , which as the crow flies is 640 miles from me, and the entire river is 1,469 miles long. So that's not going to happen. Lol. I'll stick to shorter 10 miles trips.

I heard that some adventurists bring Jelly Babies for snacks so you don’t have to cook for food all the time. Pro tip!

Not sure if it’s just me, but every now and then I think I’m watching river monsters, your voice and mannerisms are so similar to Jeremy Wade at times! Really loving this series though!!

What an awesome series dude! This has inspired myself and a friend to do something similar with a river near us! Is there anything you'd do different a second time round?

Those cows were quite curious and a little jumpy :o By the looks of it, you could've used something like a Sea to Summit Pack Tap or Ortlieb Water Bag. It would've been easy to hook it onto your backpack. But then again... that would've added another 2, 4, or 8 kg (depending on if you got the 4L, 6L, or 8L variants) to your backpack weight. That said, in the multi-day trip I described on the first video I had the 10L version and together with being able to fill my camelback at the camp site and my father having his own plastic bottle for water, we used it all up (including boiling water for coffee/tea, and bouillon)

Hi mate, I'm enjoying your vids so far, a little tip to save you some sweat. The heaviest items in your bergen should be at the top. Use your shoulders to take the weight. Having your boat at the back and low down causes you to have to lean forward. Bad posture for humping gear. Ex UK infantry so I've shifted plenty in the past. Keep on trekin. Cheers.
