This feels so relatable and refreshing; I too use lots of many-times repaired, long discontinued gear that came from random places. So many other outdoors people on RU-vid seem to have brand new gear for every trip - it’s very consumption focused and at odds with being in harmony with nature (which to my mind includes sustainability).

Waterproof boots are a siren’s call! Alluring but ultimately water gets in because there is always the one big hole, you know, the one you put your foot in? 😂 Obviously they may be useful in extremely cold, slowly conditions, but for typical hiking, I always prefer something that drains and is quick drying, over waterproof. They tend to be lighter also.

I was thinking when watching you wading through the stream, that it would be warmer to have some insulating wool socks, and some lighter shoes with the ability to drain water. Using some neoprene boots could also be a good option, so long as you pick some that are almost skin tight. Otherwise if you were planning to stay dry, you could have bought some wading boots/ boots+pants, as there are plenty that allow you wade all the way up to your chest and still keep dry.

Yep, I was right lol. From ur first episode I thought "Those boots are gonna be soaked the whole trip." I would recommend some trail runners, I have some Hoka Speedgoats I really like. Very grippy and lots of padding when lugging a heavy pack. I've seen them go from soaked to comfortably dry in about 2 hours. Mixed with good socks like some Bridgedales, you just embrace the wet feet knowing that they will be dry again once ur out of the soaking wet grass and rain. Nice thinking with weight distribution on the boat. I wouldn't have thought of that and would have nose dived into the river 😆

When I started watching the series I made the assumption early on that you'd be sticking to GoPro(s) for most of the filming duties, but I was unsure about the drone. Bringing that along comes with so much risk in an adventure like this! Well done for doing it though, because it definitely adds value to the videos! Risk vs reward?

It's nice to see someone with even heavier bagpack than mine!😅 And I'm also happy that you keep showing us one doesn't need a hightech expensive equipment in order to experience wonderful adventures. I have the same view. (I'll save money for ultralight backpack tho. Those 2300g of empty rucksack felt quite unnecessary while hiking in the Alps 2 weeks ago.)

Thank you for this great series. Really reminded me of my A-level geography project which was a study of the river Axe from source to sea - pretty similar and not that far away. I didn't kayak but just cycled to various points along the river to measure width, depth, flow rate etc. Was a great trip too 😊 Looking forward to your next trips 😊

I used to enjoy the Hi Tech shoe brand but that was a lifetime ago in the 90s when they were quite decent. Nowadays I wear Columbia Redmond shoes, and typically the lower cut version for cycling. They have the tread you need for hiking but are very light weight. For rainy days I'd go with Chacos, preferably with a synthetic sock, and a second thick wool sock layer if the temps are colder. If you know you're going to walk through water, you're best served by taking off your socks and using quality sandals with good tread. A little patience can save you a day of cold and soaked shoes and feet.

Great video, nice to see the gear you're using. It's also refreshing to see that it's not all the newest/latest gear. You're using the GoPro 7's (considering the GoPro 12 came out this week) and still producing great content. It shows from a story telling point of view, it's about the story and not the gear. Same to be said with the gear you're using. I love those karrimor drybags, although I've got a few which have rubbed and caused some holes from fricton rubs

That’s a nice breakdown! Loved the adventure. I’m curious if you’ve considered bringing a water filter instead of bringing more water. I own a sawyer and it has made my backpacking life a lot lighter! I just leave with 1 liter and fill/filter as I need to.

I just wouldn’t trust the river water. It filters particles, but not chemicals. So you must just be drinking 30% fertiliser or whatever

I wonder if you get a lot of pesticides and other nasties in water because of the surrounding farms. Are those filters up for that type of pollution?

@@littlebitofhope1489 I own a Sawyer Mini which will not filter out all viruses, pesticides and other heavy pollution. This is not a real problem for me as I almost always use it in nature and try to get relative 'clean water' to begin with. However, I believe their new products do offer this kind of filtration but I haven't done much research on this.

I would recommend against using a water filter in rivers like that here in the UK. Too many chemicals and nasties in there for my liking and a don't forget, water filters can't remove chemicals.

Footwear wise, next time take a look at the Altama OTB MAB. (Over The Beach, Maritime Assault Boot) designed with Navy SEALS in mind. They are far from water proof, but they drain and dry very quickly. Intended to be worn without socks to aid your feet drying quicker too. I’ve run them for years and they’ve been fantastic. Not the most comfortable for a long hike, but for something like the river trip they would be a solid upgrade from a hiking boot.

You are slowly inspiring me to buy a blow up boat or something and a tent and head out there. I live somewhere on the River Medway its a nice place, some locks on the river so i want something i can carry over them because i don't wanna bother the proper boat people too much. we have pillboxes along the river so many places to camp. one of the pillboxes i painted the inside white with a few friends. i could try and find and see if its still there. Thank you for the videos.

Depending on the circumstances I'd really recommend a packraft as they are relatively light and still very robust. I got myself a 2nd hand mrs microraft this summer and it's so comfortable when having to carry it outside of the water and also if you haven't got a car to get directly to the water. 2-5 kg are easy to take on a bus. It just makes these boats so much more usable.

I don't know where they sell it in Aus or if your blue top maybe came from New Zealand, Active Intent is an in-house brand for a big box retail store here :) The Warehouse. You wouldn't get the exact same one but they definitely still sell that kind of gear, very reasonably priced.

Do you like to “make do and mend” or does a lack of finances stop you renewing kit - asking because a lot of what you mentioned is old and needs updating? I think collapsible water bottles / carriers would be a great addition, it would allow you to carry just as much water as you need without the added bulk when you don't need to carry so much. I couldn't help but think watching the series Geowizard would have had stash points rather than carry all of that weight!

While you seem to have gotten good use out of your stove, have you considered getting a Trangia stove? Here in Sweden they're sort of the gold standard for camping stoves and are a lot less flimsy than many other camping stoves.

The thing is that water filters will keep out pathogens but not harmful chemicals like pesticides, herbicides and the like, and big rivers are unfortunately full of pollution because they have larger watersheds so carrying potable water is the healthier option.

I run my stove on lawnmower fuel, Aspen 4. Cleaner fuel (more expensive as well) stops me having to clean it all the damn time.

Thanks for the video, loved the entire series, it was great fun. Can I ask you a question? As you were pretty much always by water, why didn't you take a filter for clearing? Like the MSR Trailshot, and some Chlorine Dioxide tablets for extra sanitization. You could have gotten away with the single 1 Litre bottle then and saved some weight and pack size. Not to mention the time and effort of knocking on doors. (I meant to ask this on the video you were struggling to knock on doors in, but forgot, seems even more appropriate here.)

Yup: Still need a water filter. The Sawyer Mini is your best bet for camping. Provided there is water, you have water. Maybe not the best with sea water, though will still work, provided that you can back-flush with clean water. Merino Wool is a good shout also, does not get stinky, works well even when wet.

My southern bro , from guy up North ...Do you ever do any wild fishing while out on your travels... If so......Love to know what gear you use? Its funny, I got myself into Hiking, wild camping, wild fishing (have all permits and rod licences ) but I been buying way to much gear..I mean ways way to much..My home has become a shed . So its interesting for me bro what you use . Most outdoor guys and girls turn their channel into (I'm a poser and look at what I own ..£800 tent etc etc) what about the little guy who does everything on budget? not everyone can get gear for free like most outdoors channels... i save hard for my gear and its only run of the mill gear but works brilliantly
