Satellite Q and A: can I get C band channels with a KU band satellite dish?
Answer: sort of.
The size of the satellite dish is directly related to the type of satellite signal wave length it is designed to receive. In this video I explain why C band works (sort of) on a KU band dish.

It's worth noting that the output (Wattage) in C Band satellites is significantly smaller than KU.

The dish size is little related to wavelength nor polarization, it is all about signal/noise ratio and signal strength emitted by the satellite. Also it is important that the numerical aperture of the LNB or feeder fits the dish. The ham operators working the QO-100 satellite use the same dish for circular polarized uplink at 2.4 GHz and linear polarized downling at 10.489 GHz. When the C-band stuff was developped, there were probably no LNBs available with a 0.3 dB noise figure. In the 90s, not only the dishes became smaller, but also the satellites shrunk, due to lower noise amplifiers.

@@NorthcoasterHobby Your channel makes me want to have a big and motorized dish in my garden, but in europe, the direct satellite reception didn't exist before the small dishes, so there is no surplus of big dishes. I looked up the aperture, so in C-band the LNBs are adjustable typically from F/D ranging from 0.28 to 0.42, and in europe the offset dishes have 0.6 or 0.62, so a C-Band LNB would overilluminate the european dish and a european LNB (X band or Ku ? dont know but say 10 GHz ) would underilluminate the C-band dish and therefore not benefit of its size. Cheers, F4HYZ

Thank you.. you providing valuable information. Ku band dish size needs to be minimum 33" to 39". A smaller wouldn't be able to provide enough signal. Thank you... thank you.

I'd like to see this guy make a video about using a small kitchen dish, attaching LNB to it, and receiving one or two channels from the satellite. On another note, I've seen pay TV companies using 1.2 meter and 1.8 meter C-band dish. But those companies are smart. They've put a chip inside their set-top box to stop them from showing free channels. They only show their own pay channels. Some pay TV companies used the VideoCrypt Decoder for the terrestrial service in the 90s.

Trying to make a satellite dish out of a kitchen dish is probably not worth the effort. It would have to be more of a bowl, and a pretty big bowl at that.

@@NorthcoasterHobby Some years ago I watched a video on RU-vid about a guy actually making a satellite dish out of the kitchen bowl. He succeeded in getting one or two channels. People were joking about him receiving the food channel. There is a documentary I believe called 'The Dish'. It is about Iran where people make satellite dish out of big pot lids. People aren't allowed to own satellite dishes there.

I am wondering about trying to get C-Band Inmarsat AERO data on as small a dish as possible from the U.K. I'm wondering realistically how small I can go. I've seen it done on an 80cm offset dish. I'd want to use it with a hackRF if anyone had any advice?

You’re welcome, I appreciate you watching it! Here’s a video on KU band LNBs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YFwCjksv5J8.html Here’s one on C-band: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tjmaN62efGc.html The idea of how an LNB works is the same for both C band and KU band. Hope these help, best wishes.📡

Do you think a 1.2m commercial satellite dish will pick up the CTV mux on 119w C band? I am in western Canada & have trees blocking my 10’ dish from getting this bird
@NorthcoasterHobby
@NorthcoasterHobby 2 года назад
I would say not likely, based on the fact that these channels generally have a higher FEC of 5/6 (forward error correction), channels with a higher FEC have a higher carrier-to-noise ratio, so more signal is required to decode the channel over the noise floor. A larger dish is usually needed for transponders with a higher FEC. But you can always give it a try, if you have the equipment. But I wouldn’t buy the equipment expecting that result. A bigger dish is better in this hobby. I have trees (neighbors) that block signals as well. It’s a bit frustrating but I just try to think of ways to work around it. Best wishes.📡📡

So what channels can you get?
@NorthcoasterHobby
@NorthcoasterHobby 2 года назад
It depends on the satellite you tune to, and your location. If you try using a C-band LNB on a KU band dish you may only get a few very strong transponders, so it might be only a few channels, depending on the satellite. Like I said in the video, you’ll need a large C-band dish to really enjoy C-band satellite. Thanks for watching.

what about c band circular is there any channels ? and ive seen some use a oh i forgot didnt they make a scaler ring the had a hole for a direct tv lnb or something like that
@NorthcoasterHobby
@NorthcoasterHobby 2 года назад
I’m not sure about the DirecTV scalar ring but I know circular C-band isn’t used in North America. Free satellite TV channels are linear polarized.

Wasn't 3.7Ghz to 4.2Ghz reallocated to 5G Cell Phone ? What are the programs you're able to receive ?
@NorthcoasterHobby
@NorthcoasterHobby 2 года назад
They’ve moved C Band up to 3.8 GHz. You’ll get channels you can generally receive with an antenna, international channels, news feeds, an other oddball channels. You won’t get pay TV or cable channels, only unencrypted channels.

Can I use c band to receive Ku band signals
@NorthcoasterHobby
@NorthcoasterHobby Год назад
It depends. If the dish is solid surface, yes. If it’s mesh, then only a dish with very tight mesh (small holes) will work. The KU signal is so small it might pass right through the mesh as opposed to being reflected back to the LNB.
