You can put a switch after the modem if your modem is a wireless gateway (modem & wireless router) you rent from your ISP, or if you're running pfsense on a system with only one ethernet port and you have a VLAN capable switch.

My wifi router is upstairs but my modum and pc are both downstairs, and I wanted to get an ethernet connection to my pc. So I bought a switch and plugged my computer, wifi router, and modum through the switch. It actually worked fine, and technically hasn't broken yet, but my isp called and said that they were going to start only issuing 1 ip per customer in a week or so and I needed to stop sending 2 ip addressed through the modum. I told them my setup and they explained why it wouldnt work, but they only talked about sending the 2 addresses, so from the way they explained it, I thought I could just get my router to have the same ip as the switch and everything would be fixed. so i tried for DAYS to do something like that, breaking my router and having to factory reset it a few times, and basically nothing on the internet would help me. I finally found this video and while i am very mad about the time I wasted, I'm very greatful you prevented me from wasting even more time, and possibly getting hacked because of my unsafe connection, so absolutely huge thanks to you

At my last job, we were dividing our networks into 2 sections. We ended up connecting lan port of all in one to switch, then 2 routers wan ports into switch. It worked just fine.
@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub 2 года назад
An all in one is a router modem combo. That would work fine. A stand alone modem to a switch would only allow 1 IP address to your network so only 1 port would work. You can also set up multpe routers on 1 network and I have a video on that setup process.

Thanks for the tip! I was about to waste my money on a switch if it weren't for your video. But could you help me recommend the setup I'm trying to go for? I'm In a house that needs multiple connectivity in different rooms. I have changed one of my satellite lines with an Ethernet port, but I could only fit one Ethernet within the tube of my power lines, so I was thinking to put a switch between the modem and multiple routers, but from what I gathered from your video it won't work. So would I be able to do it with the modem connected to a router and then from that router connected multiple other routers, without witnessing any major speed impact? Or do you have any other recommendations? thanks a bunch❤

@UltimateTechHub 3 года назад
I would ask your ISP to swap out the modem router combo for just a modem. Then connect your WIFI 6 Router to the modem. Then you can get a unmanaged switch which is easy to set up. Basically its a plug and play. And plug that switch into your new router. I would get a 10 port TP-Link unmanaged switch that would give you plenty of network ports. Hey, so we have internal wiring made in our apartment with CAT6 cables and we have two separate switches in our ground floor that are connected to the two modems provided by the two different ISPs in our area. In each flat, separate routers are connected with the switches from the ground floor through the CAT6. We are using internet till now. But is this a sustainable solution? There are occasional disruptions caused in the internet in our flat. Is this due to a cheap non-branded switch connected to the modem or is it because of the thing you mentioned?
@UltimateTechHub

Well if you have switches connected to a modem that would cause the disruptions for sure. Buy a router and connect to the modem then connect the switch to the router and this will fix the disruptions. Thank you for watching and if you subscribed thank you as well.

I don't know if I can buy this because I have a 16 port switch that is directly connected to my office router and both channel WiFi has been working flawlessly probably because the switch itself is getting data from another router so once it pass through a router it does work on other routers.

Yes the switch is connected to the router which works but a switch connected to a modem and then a router does not work. You will only get 1 IP address for your entire network. You should never connect a router to a switch. Routers preform DHCP to get IP addresses. A switch doesn't preform DHCP.
