I met someone on the beach that told me they had a proa they were looking to pass on. I said I'd take a look! what do you think?
This hull is a KIR-4, but with the rig and rudder of a KIR-8, so I call it a KIR-4/8
(with some custom features, the plastic skeg and fishing side (non-ama) platform)

The plans are available for free!
KIR4a plans www.fao.org/fi...
KIR8 plans www.fao.org/fi...

Yes do it! Sail it down here. Don't know if I'd call it a proa though, it doesn't shunt.

hahaha that's a long way! but it's a very similar scale to a tiki 21 (in terms of design payload and sail area, although longer). There are those in the proa community who want to shoo the tackers over to the side, but I think we have a lot to learn from each other! the owner called it a proa but I wasn't really sure what to expect

Mate, that would be a wild ride. I would love to see that done up and see what it can do and, how to tack/gybe it!

haha this one is a tacker so it tacks like any other boat, like a trimaran with one float broken off
@zackariasthepirate

Interesting. I just bought pair of hulls similar to the larger one in this video. I hope to make it into a trimaran later by building a larger center hull. This one you could use the big one as the center and sandwich it with a Hobie cat 18.

could do but I'd rather see people's reaction when I sail into the bay with one outrigger less ;0

Oh but of course! Another vessel for a trans-pacific journey? I've enrolled in a waka course at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Would love to learn to sail it.

haha glad to have shocked you out of lurking! well it is quite similar in size to this one www.creartisto.com/sansboussole/expedition_en.html that two french twins crossed the atlantic in (without instruments). I definitely want people to take this boat sailing. I can't sail all these boats at once!

Too many boats can cause problems. That is a nice project for someone.

you are probably correct. But it seems unlikely that someone more suited to this job than me will drift past this... so I'm gonna do it

@@dominictarrsailing hello Dominic.. yes I know of thirty designs . They are all on the internet and are all free... I tried to post a link but RU-vid deleted the comments as I provided a link.... All I can say .. the webpage U referenced in your video came from my website... On the home page of that website you will find the link... Have zero idea if this comment will even reach you

@@peterAustralia333 oh yes! I remembered reading your website when I saw it, with the gunter rig, on the beach! I have since met the original builder and they confirmed they read your website and found the plans! and that it's a combination of features of the KIR4 and KIR8. it was built in 2016. I was wondering if you knew of any other builds, apart from this and the one that sailed from tonga to fiji?

@@dominictarrsailing Ah yes, my mistake by not answering your question correctly. The only O Gulbrandsen designs being built now, I have heard that a Michael Savins builds the KIR-8 in large numbers, I have not been able to confirm this,, he did not reply to my email,,, The other boat I know of is the Van-2 design that is available to be bought from Paul Cheevers in New Britain, PNG, in fiberglass... and thats it... Also O Gulbrandsen did not reply to my second email,,, whereas he replied to my emails of 10 years ago.... contact me via email in u want either email address

That would be great to fix looks pretty quick
@dominictarrsailing
@dominictarrsailing Год назад
yes! though unfortunately the sails aren't right. There is a main that's a little small, no jib, but it does have a spinaker that looks good. the jib is only 4m^2 so hopefully something turns up

Needs to be gone over very carefully but if not able to be put back on the water at least save the hard ware so that it an be used again.

This boat is definitely gonna sail. It does have pretty good hardware on it. but was cheaply built. Today I learnt that it was actually built from driftwood, native NZ timber that washed down the river after a storm! the original builder milled it and built this boat

it's in Nagle Cove! I have already started fixing it. Already have excess boats so very happy to share! considering a little cabin for it, but we should see how it sails first. it has a main and spinnaker from a flying 15, but needs a jib (4m^2)...

It's not a Proa.
@dominictarrsailing
@dominictarrsailing Год назад
It's a tacking outrigger. Some proa sailors want to exclude outrigger canoes that do not shunt, but I think we can still learn things from each other and should accept tackers in the proa community. Although, having built and sailed both, shunting is definitely cooler, but more challenging to design and operate.
