In this video, I restore a rusty, water damaged Sony PlayStation 2 (SCPH 50001) from a lot of four PS2s. 🛠🔌
Here you can watch the process step by step.
The PlayStation 2 or PS2 was the successor of Sony’s ever nostalgic PlayStation One, being the console so many of us remember nostalgically.
It’s extremely satisfying to see the transformation!

There is room for improvement. I’m not confident the rust was eliminated. It’s hard to tell under the lighting conditions if you removed it all, but not using an actual rust remover might allow something as simple as humidity to bring back the rust. You didn’t disassemble the AC power connector, which very well might have rust in it. And considering that’s where the power comes from, I feel it is the most important. You cleaned the plastics before removing the decal. I don’t understand that. The decal looks it could of been removed even without the use of a hot air rework station. If it did require heat, a regular hair dryer might have allowed it to soften the adhesive so you can pull it off. You used a melamine foam pad to remove the adhesive, instead of allowing the Goo Gone to soak in and allow the adhesive to be removed. The melamine foam is also an abrasive and unnecessarily rough for this purpose. It’s better suited to removing scuffs or blending light scratches.

All your points are very thorough and valid, and I will definitely apply them in future repairs. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and offering your input - much appreciated!

I bought a bunch of PlayStations to fix them out of 22 I fixed 19 most of them just need a laser cleaning or replacement. 5000 model is the very best I think.
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
That's awesome. I agree that the 50000 series is the best of the bunch. They had better lasers and less issues with software compatibility. The 39000 series is the next best.

@@TRUFixes I agree with you both, the original 30000 models "with the i link port next to the bottom USB port" always failed, I had 2 of them, they never worked, I currently have a 50001 model and it works perfectly.
@jk-474
@jk-474 3 года назад
@@TRUFixes I also work on them, I’ve done tons of work with 30001 (8 screws), 30001R, and 39001 specifically. I actually like the reliability of the old models, the 400B lasers can be mixed on the earlier models, I’ve seen them burnt out where I’ve reprogrammed the EEPROM with Lens Changer through FreeMcBoot with new 400Cs, but I actually have my original 30001R model with the warrantee sticker intact that still runs, but it’s most likely dusty inside and it’s slowing the laser down. Waiting as long as I can not to pop the seal on that one, I’ve kept a few restored ones for myself but I flip them too so I do have consoles in this condition that I try to use first. Great work my friend! 😎👍🏻

When u took the lid off I had a heart attack I thought u ripped off the power button too
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
That would've sucked. Thankfully the power wasn't attached to the lid. Thanks for the view!
@cutemimi25
@cutemimi25 3 года назад
On 50000 models the power and eject buttons are not attached to the lid they're attached to the bottom part of the housing, only the 10000 and all 30000 models have them attached to the lid.

@@bloodonmyuzis Don't worry I felt the same way when I watch someone else took about the playstation 2 which happened to be a 50000 model as well, unfortunately he never fixed it "it was MN12BIRD" and I don't think he has that video up anymore.

Hi, I have the exact model as you in this video, I truly do not know why, but it has a little rust near of the control connector. Exactly in this minute of the video 8:54 you grab the part of what I am talking about. What kind of scotch pad did you use? I mean, the grade of that scotch pad. Thank you very much for upload this video, and I apologize for my english, I hope that you can understand my comment. :)
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
I used a red Scotch pad which is equivalent to about 400 grit.

I bought a PS2 Slim today for $20 at my local flea market it’s turns out there’s rust inside of it when I put a disc in it and turn it on I don’t hear the disc spinning when I lay my ear on top of the disc tray not sure it’s repairable otherwise i am out of that $20 it’s one of the last version of the PS2 it’s a 2007 model which was made the year after the PS3 was released.

Might be water damaged or stored in a place with high humidity. Does it power up? If it doesn't, you might want to look at the power supply. Worst case, you can sell it as-is for about the same price you got it and break even

Hello my ps2 is not spinning my disk can you help me with this
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
Hi. Make sure that the game that you are using is not scratched up. There are a few possibilities...the laser might be bad, the drive motor is damaged, or the switches that recognize the drive being closed are not working. You should start with cleaning the lens
@ismailb7966
@ismailb7966 3 года назад
TRU Fixes yes that is true but first it was spinning but then halfway through it was slowing down the spinning i think it has to do with the laser i took it to a shop they said it’s impossible to repair i don’t believe that because ps2 should be easy to repair
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
Unless the main power supply or the motherboard are bad, it could be as easy as replacing the whole drive assembly...that way you take care of the laser, motor, and any limit switches that activate the drive all at once

TRU Fixes yeah but in you’re opinion can a water damaged ps2 be repaired i just wanted to clean the insides of it i used a cloth that was a little wet and some of the water leaked in to my ps2 after that it couldn’t even turn on but i was consistently restarting it and it worked again but then the disc started to spin slowly
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
Yes, it can, assuming that no components got fried. Based on what you said it sounds like water got unto one of the boards and shorted something out. The PS2 in this video also had water damage but fortunately, it didn't short anything out. If you get a chance to open it up, check the boards for anything that looks burnt. I was lucky to get a few PS2s so I can interchange parts to test them. If you're able to get a donor PS2, you can try to swap out some of the boards to try to pinpoint the faulty part

It was starting to yellow out, plus I wanted to see how bad the finish was under the decal.

Should you worry about longevity use if your ps2 has rust where the vents are on a 90001, it still works perfectly just has a lot of rust on the metal of the psu
@TRUFixes
@TRUFixes 3 года назад
I plan to revisit this repair in the near future. As another viewer suggested, I'll be using a rust removing compound to try and remove as much of the residual rust left behind. If that fails, I'll go ahead and replace the metal shielding from a donor PS2 that I have.
