Can I unlock it with my photo? Face ID vs Windows Hello vs Samsung Facial Recognition

How safe are facial recognition systems on various devices? In this video, I try to fool the iPad Pro with FaceID, the Razerblade with Windows Hello, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra with its facial recognition. The results are fascinating!
I have informed the manufacturer whose device failed to recognize my real face.

@@WYSbyAdamLash I have had the exact opposite experience. SOOO many situations where Face ID doesn't work. I switched over to an iphone 12 Pro Max a few months ago and it's been one of the most frustrating experiences. Times when FaceID is awful: When you're driving When you wake up When you take off glasses When you're phone is at arms length When are focused on something and can't look straight on at the phone (like taking a quick glance at messages while gaming or phone conference) When it's flat on a table (you have to learn at some really odd angles) When you're crying (yes I know it's odd, but this is an actual problem that I had the unfortunate experience of finding out. Your face is more likely to contort. Potential issue in an urgent situation) Having been at this for months now, I would go back to the fingerprint reader in a heartbeat. Like not even a question in my mind. I wouldn't mind having both as an option so that each type kind of fill the gap for the other.

The simple explanation for why Samsungs face unlock is garbage is because it used the front facing cam and compares what it sees to a 2d image of your face it has saved. Whereas windows yellow and Face ID read your face in depth 3d and is impossible to trick.

Samsung really shot themself in the foot. The S9 had it all. The fingerprint scanner on the back exactly where your pointer finger was so you could easily unlock it while grabbing it out of your pocket and was ready before you were. There was a pressure sensitive home button that you could hard press while full screen so you didn't have to do an unnecessary swipe before going home. It had Iris detection for secure facial recognition and that with the camera and earpiece were crammed above the screen for an uninterrupted screen Then, Samsung got the brilliant idea to replace the pressure sensitive home button for a less conveniently placed fingerprint scanner, remove iris detection, and put a punch in the screen thats less offensiflve then Apple's notch, but worse than they had before. None of the sensors were too efficient, but if they worked at it, I'm sure by now they'd have the best setup that no one could come close to.

Critical flaw to your test, you used a screen to show the picture. An actual large printed headshot needs to be tested, partly because how electronics "see" a screen (If you ever have tried to record a CRT tv back in the day and saw distortion, you'll know what I mean) and also a photo can be bowed outwards to provide the depth you mentioned it requires.
@WYSbyAdamLash
@WYSbyAdamLash Год назад
Thanks for your feedback. I am not sure how this is a flaw. The only way this works is with the method you've seen. It doesn't work on a printed image. The point behind this test is to find a way to fool the camera, regardless of whether it is a screen or printed paper.

@@WYSbyAdamLash You're saying that the Phone works with a computer screen image of you, but not a high resolution and to scale photograph? I find that hard to believe that a computer screen works and a photo doesn't. The point of me mentioning this was to see if a different medium would work to fool it. As you said, the first two likely use algorithms that computer for depth to ensure it's not just a picture on a screen, and with my comment about bowing printed photo outwards, you could possibly test the complexity of that testing. For example, if it just has to detect that there's space beneath the chin for example, a picture could be slightly creased backwards at the chin in the photograph (or even have the photo printed and affixed to a manikin head. Do you see what I'm trying to get at?

I mean YES, Face ID has been very superior compare to any Android phone's Facial Recognition/even Fingerprint System. It kinda suck that Samsung discontinued the Iris Scanner/Intelligent Scan that was last seen on the Note9 wherein they could have just retained it on a bigger holepunch display. Now Apple caught up with the Hole Punch and called it Dynamic Island which honestly has been long present on Samsung phone's through Galaxy S10+/S10 5G. It's just that Samsung failed to utilize it fully and let Apple steal the idea and add it beautifully on their Face ID implementation. I love iOS' Face ID cuz it's more secure and all that but in all honesty the only thing I hate about it is the two-steo unlocking where Apple could have implemented the effortless Face Unlocking where you don't have to swipe no more after the sensot recognises your face. Pretty goofy inconvenience but nonetheless I wish Apple would still address it on the upcoming iPhone 15 series. #FaceIDisTheSuperiorOfAllBiometrics!
@WYSbyAdamLash
@WYSbyAdamLash Год назад
FaceID is generally more secure than Samsung's Face Unlock, and Samsung clearly states that. I agree with your opinion regarding Apple's unnecessary inclusion of the swipe to unlock the phone. However, it can also be problematic since the phone may be unlocked when you point it towards your face unknowingly.

Unfortunately, things aren't different with the Galaxy S22 Ultra even with the latest firmware. This issue cannot be fixed with software due to hardware limitations (no depth sensor like the iPhone). Watch the same problem happening on the Galaxy S22 Ultra in my review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KAm9zz7_8D8.html

Samsung lets you know before you register your face that facial recognition can be tricked by a photo and that it is the least secure method on their phones. It's not a design flaw, it was an intentional decision to remove their infrared scanners to improve their screen to body ratio. If you want the most secure method of unlocking your phone the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is what Samsung wants you to use. Just like apple pushes face ID over any other method.

@WYSbyAdamLash

Huawei is actually less secure than Samsung, generally speaking. Samsung has Knox, which has military grade encryption for all their devices. When I had the Huawei P20 Pro, I was very disappointed when I called their customer service to inquire about security and encryption. At the time, Huawei devices were not encrypted, and that is a major security risk. Think about that before selling your phone to a stranger, for example.
