Can I Use a Regular Dolly as a Trailer Dolly?

In this video I answer the question "Can I use a Regular Dolly as a Trailer Dolly?" Many people have a regular 2 wheel dolly or hand truck at home, but don't want to purchase an additional trailer dolly. I’ll show you how I used a few items I had around the garage to take a 2 wheel dolly from Harbor Freight that I already had, and turn it into a light duty trailer dolly.
This can be used to move the trailer around in flat ground around your yard or property. I would not use this trailer dolly on hills, or bumpy ground. That is probably better left up to the real thing.

Awesome! Guys that can figure stuff out and then improve on it. Better than a college degree (seriously). I tried to teach him, but my son is getting a degree in some crap or another and is as sharp as a bag of wet hair when it comes to man-stuff like this. Much respect to you and your pops.

Hello Chris. Thanks for sharing this genius idea. I am going to build one this afternoon. Take care, Ben

I watched your video and built this today! Super fast and simple build, and it works great! 👍 I did modify it a bit, as my dolly was a little different. 1.) I sandwiched a 16” 2x4 between the two outside boards and screwed it in place to make the outer boards gap more uniform. 2.) I put a little 4-1/2” square of plywood on top instead of the 4x4. I then drilled through the plywood and center board to install the bolt. 3.) I added a 4-1/2” long piece of a 2”x2” across the top where it meets the dolly center support to keep the rig from falling back through the dolly when unloaded.

Oh, and I didn’t have to cut one board! I had scraps and they worked perfectly. 👍Thank you for the video!

Will be incorporating your idea into my solution. Love that you didn't measure "everything"...you just built a functional jig and that's all is necessary for this vs. over engineering it. KISS approach. Thanks.

Wow! What a great idea!!! I need to move my 27-ton log splitter around our property. I was going to make a dolly, or buy one at our Princess Auto outlet, but your idea is great..., use what you have. Thanks.

Nice idea, and is very similar to mine, but I have a different approach to the task of moving the trailer. Yes, the ball is basically fine for this. But, I pick my trailer up by the tongue instead. I made a tongue fitting at the pickup point near the ball receptacle. It's a piece of 2 x 6 with a hole in it. My hand truck adapter has a nearly vertical 2 x 4 at the correct angle tapered down to a 1.5" x 1.5" square at the top where a ball would otherwise be. This fits into the 2 x 6 with the hole under the tongue. I can pick up the trailer that way and move it around just the same as the ball design. But in my design the trailer ball receptacle has nothing in it, and I can use the dolly to maneuver to the exact location and drop the receptacle right onto the tow vehicle ball. I hope my explanation is clear enough.

I love that you can move it, and drop it right onto the ball of a hitch. Cool idea, thanks for sharing. Maybe I’ll make a version 2.0 in the future!

you think that'll hold up and work on a 3500-4000lbs boat or trailer ?
@EvolutionDIY

I doubt it. I actually tried it on a small boat trailer ( 20ft Bayliner Capri on a trailer) recently, and it was not sufficient. I ended up moving it with a small compact tractor.

Great idea. Your approach to invention reminds of Elon Musk's methods - build a prototype and test it. Modify it to work better. Rinse and repeat. Thanks
