In this video, we have a look at how good ice dancers are at jumping! Of course, this is just two examples of ice dancers!
@Maks_Spodyriev is an elite ranked ice dancer (5th in Europe and 11th in the world) and has not jumped since he was around 10 years old. As a child, he learned a base jumping technique and could do some double jumps. It has been roughly 16 years since he last tried some jumps. He was using 100% Ice Dance equipment that wasn't designed with jumps in mind at all.
I (Lloyd) also competed as an elite ranked ice dancer (7th in Europe and 12th in the World) and have not attempted a jump since I was about 14 years old. I used to jump until the age of 12, but tore my left knee and switched to Ice Dance. The last time I jumped I did manage a full set of doubles, but I was about 40kg lighter than I am now. After having a few operations, I didn't fancy picking up another injury for this RU-vid video, but fortunately, Maks wasn't afraid 😁
One thing that is worth mentioning when we talk about ice dancers jumping is the way we train compared to singles skaters. Singles skaters train to be explosive and fast so that they can spring up high and get the rotations of their jumps done before they land. Ice dancers don't train explosive strength as much as they don't need to be able to jump and rotate triple and quad jumps. Ice dancers focus on strength, balance, and style.

Wow Maks did really well jumping with dance blades. You can see how fast he can rotate. Just imagine what he could have done on FS boots and blades. Seriously impressed. Glad you decided against racking up an injury for a video Lloyd. Thanks for sharing this enjoyable video. Would love to see how one could work up to doing 3 turns at speed. I can do them in waltz 8 but trying them flying down the ice terrifies me.😫

What is it about 3 turns? So many of us have problems. Thank you for your honesty.
@amyproulx5091
@amyproulx5091 3 года назад
Practice! If you’re comfortable going fast down the ice it makes it much easier, especially if you can go quick down the ice and not be fazed at all by your speed and not having to worry about it. For the 3-turn focusing on bending your knees at the right times, having the rise in the middle, and turning at the right time (half way through the 3 turn; if you start looking at one side at the board, when your on your edge and your body is completely facing the opposite board you turn). With practise you won’t end up having to think about these things as it becomes muscle memory, but you can do it! I would start by individually practicing stroking quickly around the ice and separately practicing your 3-turns and increasing the speed of them over time as you get more comfortable with going faster. :)
@amyproulx5091
@amyproulx5091 3 года назад
And definitely use your arms and shoulders to block during the turn! If you can block it will make it easier when going faster, but try to stay calm and breather so your shoulders don’t rise too much as that will make it harder to do the turn

Those comments at the end about Tutberidze didn't age well, did they. She produces "great" skaters by giving them medication to delay puberty and breaking their bodies as children so their careers are over by the time they reach 17.

I was asking myself sometimes if the ice dancers miss some of the more acrobatic moves that they can't involve in their routines? Or they would rather miss more freedom from the frames to create even more artistic programs?

Most ice dancers probably started out doing singles skating. Back in the late 1970s/early 1980s when I used to skate at the old Altrincham Ice Rink (closed in 2002) I remember watching Nicky Slater doing double jumps and this was about 5 years after he had been a top ice dancer.

You know what, that's really reassuring! To think you're this good at skating and get this nervous about jumps! I can gladly relax about sticking to my wobbly singles forever and enjoy putting work into steps. If..... I see ice again someday. Otherwise in spring on rolls 😂

i stopped skating about two years ago (i was an ice dancer who did single skating for a bit so jumps make me nervous too) and just recently got back on the ice and the first time i did, i was like a beginner again. it felt like i should’ve been in rentals. honestly: even if it’s steps, if it IS jumps (singles or higher if you get there-it’s not as hard as it looks, it just takes time), working on ANYTHING will progress your skills and make you a better skater. working off ice can help too!! 3-turns aren’t too hard to practice off ice, balancing on different sides of your feet to imitate edges, off ice jumps, etc. keep working at it!!!
@ajonkahonka
@ajonkahonka 3 года назад
@@lukaspatel i stopped skating because i started losing interest and the only thing that kept me going was synchro. i really don't like jumps and spins because i'm a bit of a scaredy cat and also, i don't really care about it. it's cool to show off sometimes but i much prefer twizzles and synchro, as well as like spreads and stuff.

Witam Maks & Lloyd I am a German father (in Germany ) and have a 7 year old daughter . She is Polish and lives in Poland, actually living currently in Moscow . She skates since she is 4 and wants to Ice dance instead single . What can you recommend for children depending the perfect club, training, safety, the right shoes & blades, finding the best possible partner to dance with for long term (guess that's a matter of being lucky?) ? She sleeps with her skates in bed and is crazy to learn it. But I do not want any pressure. It should be fun mainly and if she likes to compete for more someday , ok.... Generally she is shy (depending cameras around her). So what is your experiences , tips etc ? Thanks a lot Marky

Well, what can I say they still give skaters great basic technique in the Ukraine as long as Maksim still remembers all entries to the jumps and even landed nice double axel! After 16 years in ice dancing and on the blades which aren't suitable for jumping at all. Cheers from Russia and thanks for mentioning Eteri Tutberidze's group. Yep she switched single skating to ice dancing, but became single skating coach, and actually many former ice dancers did the same, because they know basic techniques and it helps.

What do you think about health & permanent jumping? Example: Alexandra Trusova. She does 4x ...very extreme ... , When will her hips get damaged...? It worries me if landing always on the same foot/leg/hip. The pro skater Alexei Yagudin had a hip surgery (I think a new hip?) as much as I know, but still he jumps ? What's your opinions ?

Can you make a video explaining the differences between figure skating and ice dancing?
@Braxiatel_
@Braxiatel_ 3 года назад
To explain it briefly: Ice dance is a type of figure skating, the same way singles, pairs, and synchro are. Ice dance started out as being ballroom dance on ice, but has since evolved so it's not ""just"" that. The most notable difference between ice dance and other forms of skating is that ice dance does not involve traditional skating jumps, although it might involved skaters have both their feet off the ice as part of a step sequence (you can look up the finnstep for an example of this where the 'jumps' are easy to see). Ice dance on the olympic/world championship level requires two skaters to be dancing together, though some countries also have national solo dance competitions. Like pair skating an element in ice dance is lifts (one partner lifts the other), although in ice dance the point of support for the lifts are not allowed to be above the shoulder of the person doing the lifting. Another signature element is the twizzle - they're sort of like a spin, but moving. It focuses a lot more on artistry and edgework than the other types of skating.
