HOW TO TELL APART THE JUMPS IN FIGURE SKATING

I get a lot of comments saying that all the jumps in figure skating look the same...and that's true if you don't know what to look for.
This video explains how you can recognize the different types of jumps in skating: what to look for, how the jump is performed, and lots of examples!
Don't be discouraged if they still all look the same even after watching the video, it takes some practice before you can correctly identify the jumps in real time.

Newb here! Why are so many jumps "only for men", only "attempted by men" or, only used in women's skating under specific circumstances? Is it because of rules, it makes more sense point-wise, or are women's bodies just not made for it?

I have seen so many videos not caring to explain what is an 'outside/inside edge', 'toe pick' and just throwing common expressions like "right back outside edge" etc as a given. They probably don't realize that even this is very confusing to complete newbies. I really command you for including that bit since It's essential and so many videomakers brush through it and if the viewer isn't able to understand that then the rest falls flat. The video is very clear and take things slow showing first the mechanics of the jumps in slow motion with pointers and only then the videos in real time speed. Possibly the best one on this topic to show complete newbies. You're a jewel! Keep going with the channel!

"Double axels are standard for ladies, while triple axels are standard for the men. Very few women attempt triple axels." Now (2/8/2022, one day away from Olympics men's free skate), there should be another line: "Very few men attempt quaduple axels, in specific, Yuzuru Hanyu only." Update: IT WAS CERTIFIED!!!!!! WE JUST WITNESSED HISTORY BEING MADE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Ok I was so sad when I saw that he didn't do it and also didn't land the next quad and I was like crying through that day and the day afterwards but I'M SO PROUD OF HIM DOING IT!!!! He really could've just played safe, but he didn't (very yuzuru-y)! Yuzu said the ice hates him in the short program but as idk who but somebody said, "The ice doesn't hate you, the ice is just trying to keep you." I totally agree !! Update again: omg he said he's gonna continue attempting it and he won't quit being a competitive skater yet!!!!!!!!! I'M SO HAPPYY!!!! I was literally preparing mentally both ways, if he retires or if he doesn't. I was thinking if he continues then YAY he gets to continue his dreams and conquer the 4A and if he doesn't continue then YAY he doesn't have to get hurt that much anymore. Anyways I'm sooo happy because this is the yuzu I'm used to knowing (not the one that asks why effort doesn't pay off)!!! :DD

This video is two years old but for anybody who comes in now I just want to say that there’s another jump, the quadruple axel, never been landed before (because it’s basically the hardest jump to ever have been attempted), but in the Beijing 2022 olympics Yuzuru Hanyu attempted it and was LESS than HALF a rotation off and got it ratified by the ISJ as a quad axel (4A). He didn’t land it but he’s still the first person to every get it and it wasn’t marked down as a 3a.

Honestly I got into figure skating a couple of seasons ago, (I managed to catch a few seconds of the winter Olympics in PyeongChang and I was hooked) and I didn't understand a thing. Even more so while searching for explanations on RU-vid, (because every single one I've seen brushes over the details) so it's really awesome and helpful that you're doing it! Keep going bro! lol✨💜⛸️

The best way to enjoy figure skating is understanding the jumps, the most difficult part ofevery program. I've seen so many videos describing them, I am still confused when trying to identify the jumps in areal time routine. Thank you for this video. The best. You are a great teacher!!!

I never even knew about the edges of the skates. People that live in a tropical country like me don't about that sort of things. These explanations are much appreciated, and helps a lot. Thank you very much! I'll definitely come back to this whenever I need a refresher.

And now there's Malinin's Quad axel. Thanks for the video, I've watched for years and never got the difference. I just nodded my head and let the announcers say Loop and flip and just believed whatever they were saying.

Everything is so difficult to memorize and to see the diffrence between the jumps for someone who knows nothing about it and trynna understand the scoring, jumps, spins and everything about this sport😭. Thank u for this video👏

Nice educational video. I can recognize the differences between a flip and a lutz, but not a flip and a toe sometimes. Or I still don't fully understand a flip. I need to rewatch that part again. And thanks for using a variety of skaters! It's interesting to see.

Thank you for making this video. I have even more respect for now. This is like watching what not to do to get an ankle injury 101. I can absolutely see how someone could overthink these jumps, which can be dangerous. It can cause too much hesitation, resulting in injury. This is so technical. Bravo to you, video maker!

A nice comprehensive video. This is the video I must show to my parents so they can finally tell the difference between flip and lutz. Even after 8 years they still don't see the difference. I still would've wished to see more in-depth comparisons of: - the old Salchow and the new. - Loop's free leg. Some people keep it in the outside edge while others tend to keep it on the inside edge. - Axel hands. While usually skaters swing them from down to up some skaters do it sideways. So they stretch their hands up to their sides and when they're about to jump they pull them together.

It's such a well-made video, congrats! Wish I had an educational video like this decades ago when I started following the sport, it would have been so useful. I hope many people who're learning the jumps will watch your video. :) Bonus: beautiful walzes by Chopin and Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, you selected great music too.

Thank you for the clear-cut explanation. I’ve never actually heard or seen anybody explain it quite this clearly. My grandmother and grandfather used to love watching figure skating together, but I never got into it because I couldn’t understand it. This video makes it easier. I can now talk figure skating with grandma. Thank you, you are my hero. I love my grandma to pieces and want to be able to talk figure skating with her because it’s one of her favorite things to talk about besides gardening. You have officially made hero status in my book for making this video.

Man, if only my coach from 1976 could’ve explained edges and the leg positions as well as you. I probably would’ve skated a lot longer. ( not really, I grew from 5ft2in to 5ft7in in less than a year) This is a terrific video!!! 😀😀😀

I have always trusted Peggy Fleming, Robin Cousins and other past champions and cognoscenti to know what they are talking about when commentating; particularly on the jumps. I left the arcane elements differentiating a toe from a flip well alone and got on with savouring the exhilaration when they are well executed. That is, until Sochi 2014 when brazen duplicity made a damning statement into the integrity of the ISU and various parties. The brouhaha roused my curiosity. This "Figure Skating Jumps for Idiots" gift from you is priceless. It does the job admirably, and you are a treasure of this beautiful sport. I only discovered this helpful guide today. Thank you so very much. 👍👏
