Can inflatable kayaks handle challenging situations?

What inflatable kayaks are capable of is something that is often debated and sometimes underestimated. I kayak all year round with my fleet of inflatable kayaks and, depending on the kayak, do see limitations sometimes but more often find them to be versatile and very much up to the task. In this video, I have collected examples of more challenging conditions where I'm using different inflatable kayaks, including kayaking in rain, snow, ice, winter, darkness, wind and handling waves, surf, and swell from large ships.
The kayaks I use are of quality construction and are always used with appropriate safety gear on board, spare clothing, a drysuit or other protective clothing if in cold water or weather conditions, and adapted safety assessments for each trip. The stability advantage of many inflatable kayaks give them an edge safety-wise in many conditions, though they are often vulnerable to wind or potential damage from underwater objects.
* Kindly note that all inflatable kayaks may not be capable of handling some of the conditions shown here, or appropriate to use, and that you should always make an assessment based on your own skill, experience, risks and conditions for each individual trip, and the capacity of your kayak and gear. Always bring appropriate safety gear and plan for difficult scenarios such as a capsize or need for rescue. Paddling through ice, as I do in some cases here, is dangerous unless you have proper experience, safety gear, and understand the limits of your own capacity and your kayak's. Do not attempt this unless you are absolutely sure of all of the above. *

Great footage and some fantastic adventures Patric, I have the x500 & 393 razorlight both of which i purchased late last year after recovering from illness, I have yet to get them wet but now I’m all good first trip out to Anglesey next week, watching you and following your adventures inspired me through some very dark times, thank you.

Thank you for your positive feedback Carl. Sorry to hear about the illness and tough times - hope things get brighter as the days do going forward. The x500 and Sea Eagle 393rl sounds like a great fleet. When you get a chance, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the 393rl compares to the x500 speed-wise. Just stay safe out there with the water still very cold. Perhaps you noted the last video here on clothing and safety during the cold season. Stay safe and happy paddles, as I tend to say, and all the best! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KHnhAPh6CMg.html

In addition to my reply below, here's a video on safety gear - thinking especially of things like a paddle float, bilge pump, waterproof pouch connected to PFD for phone, and spray skirt for safety, though you might already be well aware. And of course those spare clothes in dry bags! Take care. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9d0Vfv7NQaY.html

@@AirOnTheWater Thank you for your reply Patrik, I have a little experience over the past 25 years sea kayaking fishing, I have watched all of your videos including the safety & cold weather clothing, I am just waiting the arrival of my new Nookie dry suit, as soon as I test both craft I will give you some feedback, I do have a carbon fibre Canadian to test as well but the idea of the inflatables is the ability to take the with us in our caravan ( RV) for our American friends, I hope Kayak Cliff is watching I do enjoy his channel as well, after watching his review that is why I purchased the Razorlight, take care be safe, Carl.

@@AirOnTheWater Sorry Patrik, I forgot to ask, what about deck bags on the x500 with you unsurpassed experience of that craft would be a big help to owners in choosing, I was looking at the Red paddle bag.

@@carlneill4034 25 years, wow! Then I expect you're really waiting to get out on the water once the new drysuit arrives. Should be great - I hear good things about the 393rl but haven't had a chance to paddle it myself. Will be interesting to hear.

frozen water -i give up! but the wave riding with the itiwitt x500 this mission look possible are the dry-suits also from decathlon stores?
@AirOnTheWater
@AirOnTheWater Год назад
Hehe. Crushing light ice (with proper safety gear, awareness, necessary experience, and caution) is super fun! I believe I've seen wetsuits only in Decathlon stores here. The drysuit I'm using is from a local Stockholm store, a major Swedish kayak store called Kajaksidan, and it's an adapted Dryfashion Drylight drysuit.

Yes they can if it is a itiwit X500 !🎉🎉

The Itiwit X500 and the Airfusion EVO do indeed handle rougher waters better than most speed-wise, assuming the paddler has a bit of balance :-) The pontoon-style kayaks are extremely stable though :-)

Incredible! Great video!! I’m curious to know if you have a favorite inflatable kayak and why? Also, which kayak do you prefer to use for which water condition (sea waves, rough water, chop & wind, calm waters etc.). I love my Advanced Elements Advanced frame and feel really comfortable in chop since it’s literally like a big sit in raft with a spray skirt, but I’ve not yet taken it out in really rough conditions. Also, wondering if you ever experienced a wet exit due to the conditions and if you were able to re-entry with the waves and wind?

Thank you very much! I own 9 kayaks, 8 of them inflatable and one foldable, and I would say my clear favorites (and most used) kayaks are my Itiwit X500 Strenfit - my most capable and fastest inflatable, and my AdvancedFrame Ultralite (half the weight of the AdvancedFrame at 7.9kg, not as fast but otherwise very similar - and extremely portable). I have decided to sell one of my inflatables but really had a hard time choosing between them; they are all good for different conditions. I have a 2 person Itiwit X100+ which I borrow to friends or use in tandem paddling situations; an Advanced Elements Packlite which at 1.8kg is awesome for travel, hiking, or biking; the above mentioned kayaks, the Airfusion EVO which is almost as fast as the X500 but weighs a bit less, thus more portable, but takes MUCH longer to set up; my AdvancedFrame Expedition Elite which can take a lot of gear for expeditions etc, and so on. Which kayak I use depends a lot on the expected distance of the trip, and how convenient it will be to bring the kayak to the water. I have brought the 18kg (including bag) Itiwit X500 all the way from Sweden to Finland, so not shy to carry a bit... but sometimes a lightweight kayak is a great solution. For trickiest conditions on the water, I actually do enjoy the Itiwit X500 which I'm quite accustomed to by now (but you need to practice and use knee bracing to maintain stability). The Expedition Elite is also great for choppy waters but can be a bit heavy if paddling straight into the wind. The AdvancedFrame is really awesome with its stability. The spray skirt might not fit very well though and might be "blown" by a big wave splashing over the kayak, so it's not optimal for extreme wave conditions or open sea, but otherwise, I've bounced around with my AdvancedFrame Ultralite in quite significant waves and enjoyed it plenty. The AdvancedFrame line is great! I have never actually capsized while paddling, neither in an inflatable nor in a hardshell (I've "semi-flipped" and ended up in the water while getting onto land with tricky/slippery rocks or the like, but never had to do a "real" wet exit while out actively kayaking). I have practiced re-entry with my different kayak models though, but would like to practice more in tougher conditions as you say. With the AdvancedFrame, it isn't too tricky to get back in, either cowboy style from the back or pulling yourself over it from the side - it's just so stable. If you'd like to upgrade performance further, you could consider the Advanced Elements Backbone or Dropstitch floor. Have fun on the water! 🙂 Here's a self-rescue video with the AdvancedFrame Ultralite by the way: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K0yQE-d6gQI.html

Thank you - glad you like them! I use a non-Itiwit spray skirt, a Tahe Zegul Artistic neoprene skirt. I'm not sure how available it is internationally; in Sweden you can find it here: www.xxl.se/artistic-sprayskirt-neoprene-adjustable-waistband-sittbrunnsoverdrag-svart/p/1133925_1_style?page=1

Quite Surprised not to see the fantastic Gumotex Seawave kayak or aquaglide chelan in your armory?
@AirOnTheWater
@AirOnTheWater Год назад
Regrettably, haven't tried either of them! The availability varies a bit between countries, and I don't believe either is widely sold in Sweden. I'm familiar with Gumotex as a key brand but I have in fact noted the Aquaglide Chelan as interesting and also seemingly a very good-looking kayak. It actually does sell here online at least. Would love to try one one day.

Haha, thanks - indeed, with thin ice it's actually, as you say, more like digging than paddling. But that's kind of fun, as long as there isn't too much resistance. 😎
