Yeah. You're right. Most brazilians have a hard time understanding the "tugas". I have some exposure to European Portuguese due to the Internet and I can understand mostly of the mainland accents (apart from some very specific slangs and regionalisms) and I also have a decent understanding of Madeira's accent. São Miguel's not easy for me though. But, the average brazilian will struggle to understand even the more standard accents of Portugal.

JP, I've watched some videos of people speaking Galician and I could understand it quite decently, although there were quite some words, slangs that I didn't know. For my ears, Galician sounds more close to the Brazilian Portuguese or vice-versa than it does to European Portuguese.

I guess it depends on how much you expose yourself to other latino dialects, in my case I understand all the slang of latin countries from chile to mexico, even a lot of brazilian ones

It's kinda like that with Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese There are two more famous words that exist in both languages but have different meanings. The word "moço" or "moça" should be used to refer to a young person, but in Brazil we use it more freely, and it doesn't always matter to us if the person is actually young, but in Portugal i heard they find it to be extremely weird to call someone that if they're not actually young. Another word that in portugal has kind of the same meaning as "moça" is "rapariga," a word used to refer to young women or girls, but in Brazil that word does not have a positive meaning... in Brazil that's one of the words that means "prostitute" or "mistress."

not really, I'm not sure why the Peruvian girl had more trouble understanding other latino countries, but if you're exposed to all latino culture, you'll understand most usual language (used in the video).

Spanish and Italian are pretty similar in the pronunciation skills, portuguese is 89% similar to Spanish when it is write but we the Spanish speakers can understand when it’s write, when it’s spoke it’s pretty hard cause it’s really different instead of Italian cause it’s really similar in pronunciation

In some cases, Portuguese and Italian are more similar, though Italian is still overall closer to Spanish than it is to Portuguese. For example, when the Brazilian girl said filho (son), in Italian it would be understood immediately, as it literally has the same pronunciation as figlio. Meanwhile, in Spanish, it is hijo. If you notice, one thing about Spanish is that it lost the F sound and replaced it for an H in some words like horno (forno), humo (fumo/fumaça), hoja (foglio/folha), hacer (fare/fazer), higo (fico/figo), harina (farina/farinha), halcón (falco/falcão), hierro (ferro). Regardless, I think Spanish speakers can still get a gist of what each word means, as we still use the verb fumar to refer to smoke, follaje for foliage, and fierro is still used to refer to the metal, while hierro is specifically used when talking about nutrition and referring to the element. I think the biggest difference between Italian and Portuguese is the pronunciation. It is the same with Spanish and Portuguese, as the pronunciations are very different, but unlike Italian, we have an advantage, because Portuguese and Spanish are both Ibero-Romance languages, sharing even more vocabulary and grammar than with Italian, which is closer to French in that case.

Like my mom & her family are from Bolivia & when the Peruvian said “palta” I knew it was “avocado” since it’s also said like that there, but most Spanish-speaking nations say it “aguacate” (which I’m more used to hearing in the US). And I obviously had no idea it was also Peruvian slang for “embarrassing”. Just like Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, & Uruguay say “frutilla” for strawberry but most Spanish speaking countries say “fresa” & let’s pretend in Argentina & Uruguay its slang for “flirting” I’d have to first translate from English in my head the info I already explained as well as figure out how they’re using the word to mean in a sentence while also figuring out what they’re saying since they pronounce the “ll” like the English “sh” while most countries pronounce it like “y”. So if they say “I’m strawberry-ing with the pretty lady in the bar.” “Estoy frutilla-ando con la mujer bonita en el bar.” I have to 1) translate to English in my head. 2) decipher their accent making frutilla (fruit-tee-yah) sound like fruit-tee-shah 3) know that they’re using a regional word for strawberry that most countries don’t use 4) guess what “strawberrying” means in their slang by this context and sentence.

I also understood the word boliche I feel those people representing Latin America were a bit more sheltered it's not hard to get some words based on context either. I was stopped at TSA during a layover in São Paulo from Buenos Aires to New York, and the TSA agent kept saying to me "tesoura," while making the scissors sign and pointing at my luggage. My 10 year old ass was so confused. I didn't know if he wanted to play rock, papers, scissors with me, or he was suspecting me of hiding a treasure (tesoro) in my luggage. It took me legit a whole minute to realize tesoura meant tijera (scissors) and not tesoro (treasure). Lol.

Well, it might be because there are 9 countries that speak Spanish around Brazil. And I see y’all are complaining about why we don’t learn Portuguese, while y’all are speaking and writing in English. And there’s only one country in South America that speak in English so; looks like y’all prefer to speak in English other than learn Spanish so, we don’t feel like we have to Lear Portuguese. And I have seen a lot of people from Brazil who go on vacation to Spanish-speaking countries, compared to Spanish-speaking people who go to visit Brazil.

I prefer Brazilian Portuguese over the European one, but I remember watching a clip of the 2015 live animated version of Cinderella dubbed in European Portuguese, and the evil stepmom's voice actress was phenomenal. She had a darkness and maturity to her voice, kinda contralto deep and hoarse, almost like she smokes 10 packs of cigarettes per day. That villainous serpentine voice of her was so captivating and intimidating. It also helped that she was Cate Blanchett, 'cause who don't want a sophisticated milf.

Isso é verdade. Muitos brasileiros também não entendem muitos dos sotaques falados em Portugal. Mas, no meu ponto de vista, depende muito da exposição. Eu consumo conteúdo de Portugal já faz um tempo e não vejo problema em entender o português europeu embora sempre acabemos trompando com termos, gírias e expressões que não conhecemos, mas, no geral, dá para entender pelo contexto. Já os sotaques falado nas ilhas são mais difíceis de perceber. Das ilhas, o menos difícil de perceber, para mim, é o falado na Madeira. O acento de São Miguel é trabalhoso para entender. 😅

@@joaqueen3498 After a quick search on the Net you're right. I thought it was the opposite. I'm not an expert in pointing out the linguistic differences between both Portuguese accents. I just know some like for instance, there are more 'sh' sounds for s in Portugal than in Brazil which is more 'ss' and the vowels are pronounced more closed in Portugal. Maybe I'm wrong again. Haha. But I still find Portuguese from Portugal more beautiful to my ears and also more challenging to learn. That's just my personal opinion and preference. But I must say both of the accents sound really good.

As an Argentinean from Buenos Aires, I feel the Latinos closest to us are Uruguayans, then Southern Brazilians from Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná, then Paraguayans, then Chileans, and the rest are just more foreign, though we get exposed to a lot of Bolivians and Peruvians as well. We share that gaucho culture of eating a good asado or churrasco, sharing a nice hot mate or chimarrão (Paraguayans are more into their cold tereré), obsession for football, and the huge European immigration affected our pedigree and day to day lifestyle.

Sim, mas depende da pessoa. Eu tenho muito contato com idiomas, portanto consigo me comunicar e entender suficientemente bem para conversar com um falante de espanhol. No entanto, brasileiros que nunca tiveram contato com o espanhol vão ter sim certa dificuldade para entendê-lo. Vou usar minha mãe como exemplo: ela entende muitíssimo menos que qualquer outro brasileiro(a) que tenha tido pelo menos um pouco de exposição ao espanhol.

Ahn não, é pq o idioma português tem TODOS os sons que tem o idioma espanhol , o contrário não acontece, o espanhol não tem os sons nasais que o português tem nem os de vogais abertas e fechadas e/é por exemplo ou lh/nh, aliás nem o inglês tem esses sons deixando o português foneticamente falando com semelhanças com o francês e o occitano .

Peru’s Spanish is not only one accent they have a lot (coast , highland , jungle , etc)

they both are the hardest spanish accents for me. chilean is almost indecipherable

@@chapoxzz8958 i mean, yeah, you're right. Just like every other country. Brazil, USA, England, Australia, Japan, Russia, Egypt... So, to make myself clear: the accent of the girl from Peru sounded similar to my ear to the accent of the people in the region of Chile that I went to.

And these examples are pretty tame we have words where we can't really understand each other. If we are deliberate with our sentence construction we can sound like a whole other language to other Spanish speaking countries. Words like corn, straw or even sandals are really different.

Nós temos 12 sons vocais, então em tese é mais fácil entende-los Por exemplo, o espanhol só apresenta 5 sons vocais: A (aberto) como em Cubá - Cuba , nós temos o A (aberto) de Lá, pá, Macapá, temos o A fechado com maior ou menor intensidade como em Carâ (cara) ou Búfâlâ (búfala), temos o A nasal de Rã, Mão e Mães. O espanhol só tem o E (fechado) como em Mêdico (médico), temos o E (fechado) em você ou aberto em Pé. O Espanhol tem o som do I, que eu não sei se aberto ou fechado, mas somente um assim como no português, como em dia . O espanhol tem o O (fechado) como em gatô (gato), o português tem o O (fechado) em avô ou aberto em avó, além do nasal em Põe. Por fim o som do U, que tbm não.sei se aberto ou fechado, ambas línguas tbm só tem um som como em Uva. Traduzindo o que vc queria dizer, o falante de português teria maior facilidade de aprender espanhol, já que temos mais sons fonéticos e consonantais, porém pela velocidade e pouca familiaridade com a fonética hispânica, achamos que eles é que conseguem nos entender. Quando verdade é bem o contrário.

Espanhol é muito mais relevante e influente mundialmente que o portugues
