The word "subte" comes from "subterráneo" (subterranean) because when the first line was build in 1909 it was called " línea subterránea" (subterranean line, meaning literally subway). And the formation was called "tren subterráneo" ( subterranean train). Metro in Argentina is more associated to Metro Buses, metropolitan bus lines in big cities. Also Vermelho in Portuguese would be Bermellón in Spanish, a shade of hard red.

"Red" in Portuguese "Vermelho" is similar to Catalan "vermell" , "Rojo" sounds like "Roxo" and , Roxo means "Purple" in Portuguese

6:36* Pra quem não entendeu, vou explicar porque americanos (e qualquer falante de ingles) acham fofo o inglês de sotaque brasileiro. Como algumas palavras terminamos com o lap'tópi', notbook'i', 'cóffie', pra eles o som é de fim "ie", e tudo que termina com ie em ingles passa a ficar no diminutivo, então é como se sempre estivessemos falando no diminutivo, e isso soa fofo!

Something interesting to share. As Brazilians, usually we are able to understand a lot the Spanish language, regardless the accent, even if we never studied Spanish before. The oposite, though, is not true. People who speak Spanish as their mother language don't understand Portuguese easily.🤷‍♀

Fun fact, the portuguese pronunciation of chocolate is closer to the original (aztec) sound of the word, that sounds pretty much like "shocolatl", that means "bitter water".

It's hardly surprising that in Venezuela, Peru & Argentina they all sound so similar when they are all speaking the same language, whereas Brazilian Portugues is a different language.

Hay un montón de palabras que de haberse puesto en el video la cosa se hubiese tornado muy graciosa, dado que las diferencias entre el Portugés Brasilero y el Español Latino en algunos casos es increible. Ejemplo: Chair en Español latino se dice silla, pero en Portugues se dice cadeira pero se pronuncia más como cadera. Que a su vez cadera para el Español latino es una parte del cuerpo, que a su vez en Portugues a la cadera se le dice quadril, palabra que en Argentina se utiliza para denominar un corte de carde de vaca (res). Otro ejemplo es cake, en Español se le dice torta, pero en Portugués se le dice bolo, que a su vez en Argentina bolo refiere a algo totalmente distinto. Siguiendo con torta para el portugués, que la traducción al Español sería torcido/a que a su vez torcida en Español para el Portugués significa hinchada/afición. Por lo que en ese intercambio de palabras y sus significados un diálogo se puede tornar muy gracioso o generar caras raras dado que las palabras significan cosas muy distintas y uno nunca sabe cómo puede terminar la charla jejeje. Así y todo concuerdo que los idiomas son hermosos y muy interesantes de aprender.

In Peru we barely have ONE subway (currently under construction) and most people just call it tren (train). Oficially, it's called Metro de Lima y Callao tho. Fun fact, Damaris mentioned Metropolitano, which is a Rapid Transit Bus System in Lima, not a metro or train.

not long ago, I was writing a fantasy story and I needed different languages or dialects for the different races of the world, so I started looking at the real thing, real languages, and comparing them to one another. Wasn't long until I found the similarities between Italian, French, Spanish, English, German, Danish and Norwegian, all pivoting around the root for "Winter", specifically. so, from there, I came up with _Vyrna,_ Goddess of Winter, and the reason why people call winter "winter"... and from there, came out a whole pantheon of gods, complete with crests, festivities, paladins and attributes, based on the different races interpretations of _things they witnessed_ as they went along. it's so interesting that you included winter because it's one of those words that's as old as humanity itself.

5:14 According to what the Brazilian woman said, I actually don't think we would say a "Metro", but instead a "Metrô" to refer a metro, due to the fact that "metro" in Portuguese means literally meter in English. Please, don't let these little mistakes take over our culture and language, it can surely break a huge part of the system 😅

I think in Argentina they say subte as a contraction of subterráneo

*In Brazil "laptop" is "notebook"* with a "ye" in the end because we don't have words that end with consonants, there's always a vowel in the end, so we don't have this sound ^^

I had hoped for more slang words that would be obviously different. Beans (caraotas, habichuelas, etc) or a cap (cachucha, gorra, etc) or straw (sorbeto/sorbete, pitillo, etc). These were pretty mild differences

In Colombia we only say "METRO" for a subway. A metro can be "ELEVADO" or "SUBTERRANEO". In fact, we don't have a metro in Bogotá, but in Medellín they do. For computer, we say COMPUTADOR more often, but we understand COMPUTADORA. For a laptop we say PORTÁTIL.

Edit: Just realized she said it afterwards, anyway, she kind of pronounced it differently than we do, we usually pronounce it like: "notch boo ki".

The d in media obviously comes from the etymology of the word. In fact in Portuguese itself we have several words with similar meaning (half, average, middle), like média, mídia, médio, medida, medir, etc All hail classical Latin, the grandpa of all romance languages

As a brazilian, I can affirm that the writing of bread in portuguese is "pão" and it has a "~" in there, but the "ão" and "ção" combinations *are* pretty common here

Brazilian here, the best comprehension and conversation experience I've had with Spanish speakers was with Panamanians followed by Argentines, Colombians, Mexicans and Uruguayans. On the other hand, Spanish and Chilean were a little more difficult to understand.

There are 4 South American countries: Peru: 🇵🇪. Venezuela: 🇻🇪. Brazil: 🇧🇷. Argentina: 🇦🇷.

In brazil there are several words that are written in english. Like they really don't have a translation or at least not one that we use. So words like Internet, Laptop, Notebook... We just say this with our "flare", like she said. It's rly interesting how, for English speakers, hearing we say "Inter-nettie", "Nochti-bookie", "lappie-toppie" might sound cute and for us is just so common.

All my live living in 🇻🇪 and this is the first time that I've heard someone saying that we use "ordenador" when talking about a computer... the same with laptop, I've never met someone calling it a "notebook"
