You have to crank it a lot longer and put about a half of a cup of gas in the carburetor to prime it

A couple of ideas; 1. get a camera in the cylinders and check the walls 2. drain the oil and get the cameral in the the oil pan and check the condition in the bottom end as well. (the sludge that drained with the clear liquid could be corrosion) 3. pull the plugs, connect the wires to the removed spark plugs and lay them on the exhaust, crank it and watch for spark. You can also check the timing mark for accuracy (disconnect the fuel for this as you do not need it)

Maybe some things to help out a bit- You are going to want to break out your multi-meter, or get a 12v probe (sometimes just a light), to detect what is the 12v source. For the ignition to take place, you are going to need the key in the on position, and trace the lead that only gets 12v once it's clicked on, and that is usually going to run into the ballast resistor that you have on your fender. There should be some illustrations out there on that, which will help greatly. But, the biggest help out there is these two channels: Thunderhead 289, and Junkyard Digs. There is an absolute wealth of information on both, and it'll help with a whole lot of grey areas on the most important things like initial timing, tuning, and carbs. Clearly the previous owner was fighting both of those things with the previous setup. Secondary thing to the previous owner bit, you need to find out what gear you need for the new distributor. Different camshafts have different needs for metals/nylon drives. Checkout this channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-znMQCK8OPu4.html

Hi Doris, I have a Mercury Comet with a 289 engine same as your 302. The car sat for 15 years until I started working on it. Did everything thing you did would not start. Until I changed the Points and Condenser. Fired right up. Good luck!

Hello Doris! Good morning from Tennessee! Such a great video and wonderful attempt. I love these old classic automobiles and all the wonders that one encounters by working on them! You will figure it out eventually but kudos to you on ressurecting this beauty from the past! Your determination will be rewarded in the end! Keep doing what you are doing!!! Blessings to you as you move forward!

Do a compression test, check the points, make sure you are not 180 degrees out with your distributor - use the harmonic balancer to find TDC, confirm fuel to the carb.

Regarding no crank from the ignition switch, check the neutral safety switch, which is in series between the ignition switch and starter relay. It should be mounted on the driver's side trans case. Wire color should be red w/blue trace. If there's a problem at the switch, check adjustment or wiring. Also make sure back-up lights work which could also be a clue. Keep in mind the ignition switch or starter relay may be at fault. So you start circuit would be: Battery---> Ignition sw --->Neutral Safety sw --->Starter Relay --->Starter and Ignition Coil Primary. HTH

I'd drop the oil pan to clean out all the sludge, the pickup will be clogged too. Good to see the fuel pump replaced, the diaphragm on the old one would be no good, but If that Edelbrock sat with gas in it, it'll need a rebuild. Those are easy carbs to work on though.

Just pull the engine. wrong distributor half assembled. missing parts hoses cut water in oil (rain water?) this is someone's project, with an unknown plan, best to just go for whatever end plan you want (stock, modded, etc) but it all starts with the engine out.

At top dead center , the line on the crank pulley should be aligned with the zero line on the tab located on the timing cover . Need to make sure both valves are closed (intake and exhaust for cylinder #11 this is compression stroke). The other time the crank pulley is aligned with the zero line on the timing mark will not work because in this scenario one of the valves is open and the engine will never start. Plug up all the vacuum ports for now just so you can try to start it, you can deal with that later. Check for spark at spark plug to make sure the ignition is working properly.. for starters(no pun intended) make sure you have 12 volts to the coil on that red wire when the ignition is on. Hope this helps ..

Hey Doris, water in the oil results in a blown head gasket. Plus, gunk in the oil pan should have been removed before adding fresh oil. There is a chance of the oil pickup tube being clogged. Easy to check oil pressure by spinning the engine with plugs removed. Wish you luck !! ❤

Checklist: 1) Charge the battery safely 2) Open up the carb and clean out the gummed up fuel - have a rebuild kit ready. 3) Make sure fuel comes into the carb and prime it with some fuel 4) Invest in a multimeter - a cheap one will do 5) Get a compression tester - doesn't need to be fancy 6) Make sure the rockers move freely 7) Take off oil pan and clean the sludge and pickup and oil pump as others said - have a spare gasket ready. RTV is a bad second choice imho. 8) Check ignition circuit 9) Spark timing is set when the engine is running, with a timing light and turning the distributor carefully - then tighten at best timing. 10) Maybe an in line fuel filter will help if your tank was rusty. 11) An engine flush might help 12) Probably a coolant flush on this age of engine. Good luck.

She is beautiful!!! I have a 67 coupe with the original 200. 6 cylinder inline engine. She's back home in Long Beach. I have to get her out here to Arizona. San Tan Valley ti be exact. She was my first car. I love the ponies. Mustang Country in Lakewood California is a great place for parts. You can find them online too. They ship. For my Mustang, I had to replace the mechanical gas pump after it had been sitting for decades. Try using some spray directly into the carb to see if she will turn in with that first though. Before you do that though. You may want to drop your oil pan and clean it out. You don't want to get all of that circulating in your motor if you do get it started. 💯👍👍😉

If you left distributor at that position you're 180 degrees out if you left it as pictured showed..Also you need to take each spark plug out and spray blaster or put marvel oil in each cylinder just a cap full in each and leave plugs out then turn over otherwise you're gonna scratch cylinder walls being dry ...also key has to be in run position for remote to work correctly...then put plugs back in ..get can of starter fluid spray in carb and see if you're getting fuel...those heads almost look like new or good clean used ones...but definitely if it does crank run short time and redrain that oil for new cause sitting that long it's gonna be picking up any and everything that in motor from sitting that long.. then either way if it cranks or not pulo youre oil pan and check for oil pump condition cause if that gets blocked off def burn up motor......best of luck

There's a whole bunch that still has to be done. Still doesn't look like valve time is correct, the vacuum leak situation is part of the problem, it doesn't crank evenly at all, there's a multitude of things that are still a problem. There's so much research that needs to be done to understand what you need to do to get that started. Not all those distributors come with the points properly adjusted either. All that water in the crankcase is a concern also.
@johnmilner7603
@johnmilner7603 5 месяцев назад
That’s a milkshake otherwise known as water in your oil. Most likely a blown head gasket or a crack or pinhole in the head. After your finger pops with air from #1 cyl you need to continue turning the engine until the balancer line is in line with the 0 on the timing tab. Then that’s at TDC on #1 compression stroke. To make it easier to start, move the balancer to 4* BTDC. At a bit of fuel in the carb vent tubes using a plastic vinegar bottle or funnel with a rubber fuel like the same diameter as the tube or else the engine will crank forever before it starts. A Holley has vent tubes but I don’t seenany on the Edelbrock, so just squirt gas down the primary (front) side of the carb.
@BoostJunkieMedia
@BoostJunkieMedia 5 месяцев назад
Definitely water in the oil pan. That is why it was at the bottom of the pan, the water separates and always sits at the bottom so it comes out first. You need to make sure your rotor is pointing at plug wire #1 while the motor is at TDC on the compression stroke. Pull a plug and let it arc against something metal to ensure you are getting spark at the plug. Spark, fuel and air is all you need for it to run. You are missing something of those three. Watch Derek at VGG he does a good job talking about ignition systems and fuel make it happeners and explaining them and ways to test for these items.
@billtancordo8761
@billtancordo8761 5 месяцев назад
You should have the starter check. Also check the wiring to starter. It’s seem to crank slow when you were trying to get it started. You might have to replace the fuel pump since it has been sitting for 24 years. Take your time and little by little you will get there. 👍

You mentioned earlier that you were trying to feel for pressure from cylinder 1. Your original plugs were dry. Seems to me that your connections are grounded. Im sure you already know this; But fords can be tempermental at first. I think your close. Maybe try a stronger battery. Fords have bigger Chambers and unfortunatly need a Stronger Jump wire. Maybe try jump starting your Ford from another 5.0. I dig your ride though. Remeber. Ford---First on race day. After seeing your crankcase dump. I would be a little worried about gaskets

I got my first car when I was 18 yrs old for I want to say $200 and it was a 1970 Black Rag Top Mustang. It was a sweet car but it needed a lot of work, it was spotted yellow and primer, rust. I had it painted Fire Engine Red, rebuilt the engine and did other repairs to it but it needed major front end suspension work I couldn't afford that as an 18 yr. old so I sold it to a friend for like $1500. He was taking a body shop class in JC and fixed the front end, got chrome wheels, and painted it a deep blue then sold it to one of his friends which then crashed it. Sucked I always wanted to try and buy it back eventually. I moved on to motorcycles at that point.

That liquid was water and the sludge is probably covering the bottom end. The starter was barely turning the motor so you may as well replace it (assuming the battery is new as it appeared). if your planning on refurbishing the interior as well, you may as well order a new vehicle wiring harness. Lord only knows how many breaks and shorts you have. PLUS, you can find some aftermarket kits that replace the old glass fuse box with the new blade fuses pre-wired with every connector and even a wiring diagram to guide you where everything goes. It will also keep you from guessing which wire goes where. you've got quite a bit of work ahead of you!! GOOD LUCK!

For starters, the engine needs to spin faster than it was and you need to crank it longer. the second thing is you had a massive vacuum leak on the carburetor where the PCV valve is supposed to be hooked up. you should have flushed the oil pan with diesel or something to get the sludge out.

fill the float bowls w/ gass and fill something like a ketchup squirt bottle with fuel and squeeze iinto the carb with the butterflys open - soak the intake runners with fuel. Sitting for 24 years that intake is going to be dry which will aborb the fuel coming out of the carb.

I didn't notice a fuel pump but if there was one that you added.. make sure it turns on. Next, you could help the engine by using engine start spray to see if that helped get it started while it finds fuel. It's sounds weak which could mean the starter is worn and on it's way out.

Don't waste your time on that engine! It's full of water because someone left the hood off and it got rained in. Either pull that engine out and start from scratch or buy a short or long block 331stroker, a 351stroked to 427 or you can go with a big block 390 and put a stoker kit in that. A 427 or 428 are not easy to find and are expensive. There are tons of 390s which came in Ford and Mercurys that you can buy reasonable. If you go big block then you'll need a C6 Automatic or all the stick shift stuff if you want that. I have a 69 Mach I that was a 351W and I went to a 427 big block and a C6. To be fair I bought my big block stuff in 1975 and I got a hell of a deal on it. Oh yeah, I bought my original Ford dual quad manifold at a salvage yard for $150.00. It was in a glass show case. In your car I would do the 351W/427 kit. It can make more than 1 HP per cubic inch and it's lighter so you can keep your stock springs in front. Don't take my word for it do your research.

I wouldn't even bother trying to start it.. but if you do, trust me, take off the timing cover first. 99% of the time that's how water gets into the oil on small block Fords. I would just take it out and disassemble it after seeing the water come out of the oil pan .

I would of put some engine oil in the oil filter so it will prime quicker. At least put oil in the system as soon as possible. Plug up the PCV tube on the carburetor if you don have a hose, and put a hose on the distributer. It will help the motor run better on the first start. Just saying

As far as just trying to start the engine… keep messing with the timing. You may need to move the distributor a tooth or two either direction. Yes you will need to remove the distributor itself to do this. Barely pull the distributor out enough to use its gears to feel for your next tooth. Use your rotor button to guide you through this process.

If water has been sitting in the engine for that long cause those carb air cleaner lids are crap, also musn't have had a hood on it while it sat. the engine needs to be pulled and the oil pan and heads pulled to inspect for damage, lets not kid ourselves. all kinds of magic juices and throwing parts at it likely wont get it running if the rotating assembly especially bearings and crank journals have been submerged in water for that long and is likely the piston rings are sticking with rust and or other schmoo to the cylinder walls. 289 and 302 rebuild kits are cheap. Save yourself the time and pull it Doris.

I would say the way the car is acting and all the water in the oil pan, your connecting rod bearings and or the crankshaft bearings are rust welded to the crankshaft. Before another start up attempt. I would drop the oil pan and inspect the crank and rod bearings.

When starting a dry engine you wanna dump alil fuel down the carb before starting. It will take a bit of cranking for the mechanical pump to pull enough fuel to run on its own.

I would prime the oil system using the old distributor. Then prime the carb and try again

Hi Doris, I hope you didn't pay a lot for the mustang. I don't know how long that water sat in the crankcase/engine, but not good news. Sorry, even if it starts, long term N.G. . Good luck.
